I mean that is hard to do with these large games. Don't just blame stockholders. The people playing games also put a lot of pressure to get games out. Before blizzard was owned by Activision it was common for the games to come out a year when they said they would and now a days that would be a death knell to the game let alone the company.

I despise the “we’ll fix it later” mentality that so many devs have adhered to in recent years. Maybe it’s just my age talking but I remember when games came out and if it was a glitchy buggy mess, you couldn’t fix that. You actually had to TRY to make a good game. Now it seems like as long as you have a good idea you can market it as something amazing, half ass it when it comes out and excuse it with “we have a patch coming soon.” Save patches for minor non game breaking bugs or for future expansions NOT fixing what shouldn’t have been there the first time around

I'm surprised the original version of Final Fantasy 14 only got a small visual nod. A game so bad they literally had to summon Primal Bahamut to nuke the entire world and rebuild it from scratch. What stuns me is that it went from that absolute diahhrea typhoon to the unstoppable juggernaut that is Endwalker. How modern gaming companies don't see that effort and respect for the players is the key to making disgusting amounts of money is beyond me, the prime example is right there. A game so bad they had to nuke it became a game so good they had to stop selling it because the servers couldn't cope. How do the likes of EA not learn from that and put some effort in?
@goranisacson2502
@goranisacson2502 2 жыл бұрын
I'd say EA wouldn't learn from it because of one key factor- SquareEnix HAD to improve XVI or the company would DIE. It's very survival was dependent on getting a new game to provide a continuous stream of monthly revenue. It was why it was all hands on deck (which HEAVILY delayed or altered plans revolving around practically every game they were making at the time). Which means that unless EA ever develops one game that is SO important to their survival that they MUST get it right, they're gonna keep up with the "shove it out halfcooked and patch as we go along"-style.

Incorrect, when people stopped playing Anthem and Fallout 76, EA and Bethesda simply discounted their games to inflate their sales figures. It's why I ALWAYS say it DOESN'T MATTER if you pre-order a game or not. Because publishers aren't as dumb as you think they are, and they always know how many people are buying and playing their games, and more to the point, how they can get more idiots to play their games post-release, usually by discounting their games shortly after release.

If you're looking for another older example, FF14 was so bad that they started just giving away subscriptions for free to everyone who bought it and eventually rebooted the game by blowing up the original world and aptly calling the new one 'A Realm Reborn'. GTA Definitive Edition definitely was the most recent example, it was definitive in name only. A lot of the older music was taken out for licensing along with a few extra bits, so you got less game for a slight graphical enhancement that could essentially boil down to PS2+ graphics. The game was such a buggy mess that it could barely be considered an alpha build.

@@AllHailMe12431 I think people just don't really know what being an introvert means. It doesn't necessarily mean that you're shy or that you have no social skills. And saying he got "roped into saying" these things is, once again, making excuses for him. Not trying to make an excuse at all. Journalists are always gonna be sensationalists, blowing even the tiniest things out of proportion. It's their job, after all. Sean's decision to face them himself without a plan of action, wasting valuable time he could better spend developing the game, instead of letting a marketing expert handle it, is entirely on him. I still wouldn't peg him as some kind of compulsive liar, though. More like a fool who didn't know what he was getting himself into.

So, with probably a quarter of a year away from release, 2K got Visual Concepts to work on the game from scratch as they didn't know anything about the game's original build and, well, yeah. Hell, they even cancelled 2K21 so that 2K22 will be given more time and(hopefully) polish. Oh, btw, THQ was publishing WWE games till 2013 when they went bankrupt and THEN sold the license to 2K.

Err, incorrect. Some of the worst games ever made were developed in the past, particularly Squij and some of Ocean Software and U.S. Gold's games on the microcomputers during the 1980s. Furthermore, in the old days, you'll still get a busted pile of wank because the game design and good business practices were still poor, if not worse due to a lack of swift communication and networking landscape. After all, the internet was in its infancy then and was limited to universities.

Witcher 3 was not so much an open-world game as a very detailed RPG- the mechanics developed for that game couldn't really be lifted and applied to a more "true" open world game like Cyberpunk with cars and patrolling NPC's and so on. So while it may have looked like it on the outside, the success that came from their LONG experiences in making RPG's couldn't really be lifted right onto Cyberpunk- expecting them to have an easy street when they were actually building from the ground up (and at no point admitting this to the outside world since they WANTED a hype-wave to ride) was never gonna end well.

@@DR3ADER1 that's not true. The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk were both built on RedEngine, CDPR's proprietary game engine. Aurora was only used for the first Witcher game and a very, very early alpha version of the Witcher 2
@DR3ADER1
@DR3ADER1 2 жыл бұрын
@@elstormcaller False, the RED Engine is a heavily-modified version of Aurora. All versions of RED can trace their origins to Aurora. CDPR never had the ability to make their own engine from scratch (if they did, then the PC port of Saints Row 2 wouldn't have been such a trainwreck in the first place), so like most developers, they modified another engine for the cause. Wonder why The Witcher 3 was so busted at launch? Wonder why Cyberpunk was and still is a mess? This is why. They're using an over 22-year-old engine with a different badge. Similar to how Bethesda still use Gamebryo under a different name. They CLAIM it's their own engine, however, this is a LIE. As another example that backs this fact up, it took Square Enix several years to develop and unfuck their new engine, at the cost of bungling FF14 and cocking-up the development for FF15 (which took over 10-12 years to make due to issues with both game design and the engine). It was a very, very expensive affair that lost Square-Enix billions of Yen in the process. You can't just go out and make your own engine from scratch anymore, in fact, most developers lack the expertise, funding and infrastructure to do so. As a result, they either use other engines (which require a license for legal reasons) or they modify another engine and use that as a base.
@elstormcaller
@elstormcaller 2 жыл бұрын
First of all, the Saints Row 2 port was handled by CD Projekt, the parent company of CDPR (in fact, it was even referred to as CD Projekt Black by Volition specifically to avoid confusion internally). Which is a pretty big difference, and one that in no way validates your claims that CDPR was incapable of creating their own engine. Secondly, I thought the reason why The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk were so unstable at launch would have been self evident. The games were made with shorter development time comparatively to other RPGs of a similar scope, and most of those were usually just building on an existing framework. With Cyberpunk especially we already have a lot of anecdotes from former and current devs where they mention that work on the engine was happening *as the game was actively being made* which would also play a part in that. Also, I'm not really sure what bringing up Final Fantasy and Crystal Tools does to support your argument of RedEngine being Aurora. Considering Square Enix did what you claim is the solution to developing your own engine and modified Crystal Tools to make FF14's new engine and as the base for Luminous Engine. If you have some proof or sources that claim that RedEngine is simply a modified Aurora that CDPR have claimed as their own (which is heavily illegal considering the developers of Too Human were sued because their game engine was a modified Unreal Engine derivative) I'd love to see it and be proven wrong, but right now I have your word against literally every other source I can find along with your "proof" which is bringing up other games' troubled productions and claiming that somehow means developers are unable to develop engines anymore

I was fortunate enough to play Cyberpunk on my PS4 mostly glitch-free; occasionally I'd fast travel and textures wouldn't fully load for a couple seconds, or there was that weird audio thing where characters sitting next to you in a car sounded underwater if you weren't looking directly at them, but I didn't understand why people were so mad. It seemed pretty on par with what I'd expect from Rockstar or Bethesda! And then my friend who also owned it on PS4 spent an afternoon showing me the sheer number of ways you could accidentally break the game in a way that required a hard reset, corrupt a save file just by doing too many sidequests, or render main story missions impossible to complete and then I understood.

@@hayato1886 I know that’s what they did with the first one, no clue about LoS 2 or the midquel DLC (unlikely cos ... you know ... DLC?), heard about it in one of JoshScorcher’s Top Ten Konami Fails, looked it up and yup they hid the fact it was a Castlevania reboot until it launched resulting in poor sales. But if there are worse launches and it didn’t make the cut then oh well, I’m not a particularly big Castlevania fan (the Netflix show is pretty good) but I just really liked the story (for the most part, I hated Marie and what Gabriel’s “brotherhood” put him through)

@@hayato1886 oh Christ on a stick I *loathed* that Mirror of Fate game, just made me want to throttle that “not-a-ghost-boy” little shit version of Trevor! Sure the writing sucked in parts (Marie had no problem believing that her husband would “turn evil” and handed their baby over to those same people who raised him thinking his father murdered his mother in cold blood which, yeah he _did_ kill his wife but it was all a plot by the first bad guy who was hiding among the good guys for years) but I honestly liked Gabriel enough to overlook it in 1 and 2. not mentioning FF14 on worst game launches? the game was so bad execs had to resign, the producer and director had to step down, they had to fix the game while building another mmo from scratch in a different engine because that was the only way to make things better, square had to issue a formal apology and they chose to spend the money to build a second mmo as a replacement because the original ff14 was so bad it would have damaged the company permanently if they just let it slide. the company almost goes bankrupt trying to fix that mess.

@@maproomgaming6886 final fantasy 14 wants to talk to you. One of the worse launches ever, they went back to the drawing board, released a updated version called a realm reborn, one of the best mmorpgs ever that just got its latest critically acclaimed and commercially successful expansion just last month. Literally one of the greatest comeback stories ever. From one of the worse mmorpgs ever made to arguably the greatest ever conceived, from a major retooling. In this modern Era, a game can be bad at launch, but can end up in a good place at the end of its road. Street fighter 5 is also a good example. 16 characters, no single player anything outside of very short stories for said characters, and crappy rollback netcode at launch. Now, it has 46 characters, all the single player content you could ask for, events that happen regularly to get means of getting stuff for free with in game currency that isn't micro transacted at all, some of the most fun characters to play in any fighting game, and the netcode actually works to some degree. Games can change nowadays, versus, say, the snes where a game was released, and the only way you would get a working game is a revision, which was rare, or a new version, like street fighter 2 champion edition, which was a re balanced street fighter 2, which outside of capcom, was rare as well. Heck, even star wars battlefield 2, which as rapidluigi put it, was a dumpster fire at launch with Luke and Darth Vader, the best hero and villain in the game stat wise at launch, behind a random pay wall, literally a pay to win scenario. It now a decently good shooter once they removed the loot box mechanics from the game, and the heroes and villains are more based on how much resources they cost to summon than who is the most famous. That game, however, will have the stigma associated with its launch compared to others because it was multi-player sided than both single and multi-player game that it was because ea at the time ONLY CARED ABOUT MULTI-PLAYER BECAUSE MONEY. So, all in all, games can start out a caterpillar, but can become a butterfly if time and money is put in to actually fix the game. It's rare, that I agree with you, but saying all bad games at launch are forever bad at all times shows a very narrowed minded mindset and an unwillingness to accept things that are there, or you're an older individual who was from an Era where game just releases and gets no changes ever after launch cause older media didn't allow it on consoles and you think all games nowadays are still that way.
