Majora’s Mask is such an anomaly of a game since not only did it turn out so good despite only being made in 13 months, but it’s such a different game from Ocarina of Time that I doubt it’d be released again today. In fact, Aonuna himself has said that if given the chance to make Majora’s Mask again today, it wouldn’t be the same game, and plenty of the changes in the 3DS remake came from his own ideas and not Grezzo due to feeling that certain aspects didn’t entirely hold up well. It’s such a fascinating case where the game was created under such specific circumstances that it’s something that not even its own creator could fully recreate.

I really wonder how much better these "rushed but great" games could have been had they been given proper time to flourish. Up Your Arsenal is by many considered to be the best game in the Ratchet & Clank series, but it was also an overly ambitious game that had to be rushed out of the gate, and the single player campaign does suffer for it in a lot of areas. Proper levels for Aridia and Rilgar could for instance have been a huge boon since just doing missions on the multiplayer maps (that don't even really resemble the original location) just felt like the game was spitting on the first game by bringing back those iconic planets with by far inferior presentation (and they arguably made a worse Kerwan too).

It seems odd to count Super Mario World's 3 year development cycle as #1 since Final Fantasy 7 was also designed in 3 years (or 1 year, depending on how you're counting dev time), was a signature title for its platform (the PS1), and its devs had to factor in multiple hardware changes. Final Fantasy 7 for the PS finished in 1 year (or 3, depending on how you're counting dev time). FF7 started as a SNES game in 1994 but was cancelled in order to keep Chrono Trigger alive. Some characters that eventually were included in FF7 were rendered in the SGI engine in addition to the better known FF6 battle tech demo, back when Square were siding with Nintendo. Aside from these, the project was dormant for most of 1994/1995 and development was done for the PS1 in roughly 1 year.

Looking at Halo 2, I think the reason it was so successful despite its rushed development was that Bungie knew how to cut corners effectively. Remember that between Cairo Station and Outskirts was meant to be a level called "Covenant Ship" that got replaced with a cutscene. Not to say the cutscene didn't take work, but it would take far less than an entire level that needs to have a full story script, modelling, texturing, asset placement, testing, polishing, etc. Or perhaps instead the fact that they knew the Stencil graphics engine just wasn't going to work and decided to revert back to the older graphics used in CE. I think that a lot of games that are rushed tend to fail because the devs are afraid to cut or replace things, they keep all the evidence of a poor development cycle in the game as a buggy mess. Also interesting to note, the crunch cycle for Halo 2 was so bad that even to this day Marty O'Donnell is an outspoken opponent of crunch culture. Unfortunately it seems his talks with publisher execs usually gets completely misunderstood, he told a story to one once about the goose that laid golden eggs but was pushed so far it couldn't lay any more, and the publisher's response was essentially to cook the goose once its usefulness had run out.

While it's definitely the weakest of the three, I still really admire what BioWare managed to do with Dragon Age 2. They were only given about a year to develop a sequel to Origins, which itself took around 6 years to make, meaning they couldn't have the same variety of locations. So instead, they made fewer locations that you revisit multiple times throughout the game's story, which takes place over the course of 10 years. Again, you can definitely tell the development was rushed, the short turn around forced them to get more creative with what they could do, and in a way, I kind of like 2 better than Inquisition, which felt like it was too big at times. Although, I will always appreciate the moment when my mage Inquisitor met my mage Hawk, and they just started having a snark off since they both had the sarcastic personality type.

Normally games that get rushed tend to not work or just end up being a complete letdown and failure. However in some cases some games tend to work out ok and that's usually the rare instance.

@@ddjsoyenby I think it's possible to rush out a non HD game and still be good. Not a good idea for HD games.

FE: Awakening, perhaps? (Don’t tell me, haven’t seen this yet)
@amirgarcia5472 жыл бұрын
@@blackwingtfd Awakening wasn’t rushed though? In fact they added as much shiet into the game as they possibly could due to initially believing it to be the last FE game.
@orangeslash16672 жыл бұрын
@@amirgarcia547 I think Fates was rushed because it was released on 2015, which is the Fire Emblem anniversary. So rushing out a game for anniversary release. That's sounds like Sonic 06.
