It's going to be what you make it. Make it fun. In a good way. At 60, I look back and remember things I can take pride in doing and avoiding. When I was a kid I worried about getting drafted to Vietnam. When I signed up it was peacetime under President Carter. GLakes for 13 months, then brief duty on a reserve Destroyer in San Diego before Orlando for more schooling. San Diego & sea duty were the best, followed by GLakes. Florida has a way of sucking pretty quickly if you have to be there. I would guess that, while service members' options for fighting boredom are far more advanced now than when before smart phones and the internet came along, many of the same pitfalls around us then are either gone or morphed into a yet-undefined problem. But today, you are in a different Universe altogether. If you are still miserable, start counseling. With it documented in your Service Record, you will qualify for disability when you get out because it occurred in-service. Thank you for honoring us with your Service.

I love the country, so his description reminded me of Lajes AFB in the Azores. Are you able to put anything good on your dream sheet? Anywhere in USAFE is pretty good--I just don't know about job wise it being fulfilling. Off base is pretty magical, even with language barriers. Even Osan is pretty awesome. As long as it is Osan and not the other duty stations in RoK. My friend is stationed in Okinawa and LOVES his job out there despite the Marines effing everyone up all the time. Hawaii is pretty terrible. Whenever you're not on the boat, you're stuck in Tourist hell on Oahu. I think you might can manage another island within Hawaii since you're Navy and not Air Force. Ramstein is okay, you just have to watch out for annoying dependents and creepy drunk dudes. I haven't been to Italy yet, but I heard great things about working there, let alone living there. Same with Spain. Except there's only four slots for USAF in ROTA and it's a USN base with slots for USCG to go there, too. Pretty cool there. I think Peurto Rico is also a great duty station, but some folk just aren't used to being outside the US but in US territory and having a vastly different cultural experience--at least in Hawaii the predominantly spoke English.

I had not thought about Norfolk in decades. I was in a Winchell's doughnut shop, in San Diego, drinking coffee in the middle of the night. The doors exploded open and there stood a completely frazzled Chief, with eyes the size of saucers. He announced to anybody listening that he had just driven straight through from Norfolk, Virginia and needed some coffee and doughnuts.

Having lived in Hampton Roads area (Norfolk/Virginia Beach) since 1976 I can agree with the over crowding. All the interstate and major roads are 20 years behind in updating construction and the different cities fight each other over installing light-rail lines to ease traffic congestion. Naval base rush hour lasts from 5am until 10am and from 3pm until 7pm. There is no way to travel on a major roadway without crossing either a bridge, tunnel or both. However if you love the beach scene then you will hate it here. No one knows why its called 'Tourist Season' since it's illegal to shot any of them. :)

When my ship (Carl Vinson) stopped at Pearl Harbor towards the end of our WestPac in the Fall of '96, they were experiencing a drought of sorts, a water shortage even. But a storm followed us it seems. I had to wade through hip deep water through parts of the base it rained so much at once. As a 19 year old kid from Nebraska, I didn't mind it too much. I found it entertaining in a way to deal with it if only for a short time. heh.

Spent the majority of my 4 year enlistment in Norfolk. There are worse places to be, but better places too. After a while I got used to it, but the biggest thing that sucked was the traffic. Traffic jams galore because the roads weren't designed to accommodate that kind of traffic flow, and people there don't know how to drive.

I'm currently stationed in San Diego, but was stationed in Great Lakes and Norfolk twice. I actually enjoyed being stationed at Great Mistakes because it was near Chicago (one of my favorite cities in the US). It was also not far from my hometown of St. Louis, so I could visit family and friends more frequently. But, yes, those Chicago winters are downright oppressive! I remember having to stand duty on a day when the temperature (not the wind chill) was -30°F. The summers were nice, but they were gone within the blink of an eye. Now the Hampton Roads in VA I liked. There were things to do in Norfolk, and VA Beach. DC and New York were not too far by car and plane, as well. I just hated the tunnel traffic on the HRBT, the morning traffic into NOB when all of the carriers were in port, and hurricanes. I don't miss the hurricanes/tropical storms.

The worst part of Hampton Roads is that the roads haven't been appreciably improved since 1990 and there's no room to do it anyway yet people KEEP MOVING IN. It's also got a very "Flint Michigan on life support" vibe, too. But it's also one of the only places in the country where if you have kids, they'll have friends who are knowledgeable and accepting of the potential transience of orders.

The reason Virginia gets a bad rap is because it is closer to DC, and there are a ton of military presence in the area (other branches have bases in the area). People refer to Diego Garcia as if it's Devil's Island, but I had a great time there. 1. It's far better than being on a ship. My own room, air-conditioned 2. Plenty of sleep. 3. Five and a half day work week. On rare occasions did I work an evening or a Sunday. Aboard ship you're expected to work all the time. 4. I was CDO perhaps twice a month. Rarely did it fall on a holiday 5. They let us knock off work early 3 days a week so long as it was for PT 6. Lots of chance to travel. . . Mauritius, Reunion Island, Singapore, Philippines, Japan. About every other month I went somewhere. 7. It's only a one year tour. You generally get a full month's leave sometime during that year. I went to Europe and ran around. 8. You can save a good deal of money while there, I sent much of it home and still had a lot to fritter away in Paris 9. I was there just after the cold war had wound down, but before the Persian Gulf blew up. Very quiet, often no battle groups at all in the I.O. 10. Decent recreational facilities and lots of time to use them. It was one of the best times of my life. My final year in the Navy, it was a great way to finish. As my year wound down I was more and more excited about going home and getting on with what I wanted to do with my life.

Currently there now, Its not bad honestly. Id recommend getting a car asap when you get here. Probably not from California because the tax here is expensive but if you're not worried about money then it'll be alright. If you have any questions I can gladly answer them.

It's as hot and middle of nowhere as it gets in the immediate vicinity, but the upside is that you're correct, it's very centrally located in California so nearly everything is available if you're willing to do a bit of driving. There's also a great little Central Coast Wine Country in Paso Robles about an hour and 20 away. Also, while it's hardly the greatest place ever, Fresno is only 30 mins away, and it is a city of 550,000 that has all the things a medium large city has.

I was stationed in Norfolk, VA and I would agree it sucks. Too overly populated, crowded. No body knows how to drive period. Moved 3 different times will stationed there. And they will shut down the roads over 1/2 in of snow if it snows

Add Ft Leonard Wood and you would have the 4 aces of misery. I did not care for San Diego much either. Just too much Navy crammed into too little space . But way better than the 4 aces. Yes I am one of those OSVETS. Gitmo, Diego Garcia, Midway and Wake good places to be from. As long and often as possible. Having said this. I am sure I would not like Johnston Island.

I spent 2.5 months at Ft Leonard Wood and 3 months in the Ft Riley... I remember when they moved the MP schools from Alabama to FLW. Alabama was way better than Rolla! ½ of my advanced (C Schools) are Army schools so I'm used to it and I spent a year embedded with the Army in Afghanistan, embedded in a Afghan Army battalion!

I have a Navy buddy stationed out in Lemoore. He called it 'a wasteland.' It makes sense he'd call it that given he is from bustling New York City and was previously stationed in Tokyo, another metropolis.

I too heard that Norfolk was a bad place to be stationed. I got orders here in 1984 and I’m still here. Yes, there are lots of military here. However, there is also massive recreational opportunities and virtually everything is within a few hours at most. Such as: Virginia Beach resort strip Outer Banks beach resort The Blue Ridge Mountains Colonial Williamsburg Bush Gardens theme park Washington, D.C. NYC (7 hr bus ride) Florida destinations Jamestown Yorktown And much more!

Stationed in Guam, home port for LST 819 - 1968-Mid 1970. Small town far away and offered little. Survived at base Macombo Club and newly built bowling alley. West Pac deployments took us away from there for extended times. Underwent sea trials over three months in Yokosuka, Japan. Only good memories in Yokosuka. Pre-commissioned a new LST-1181 in Norfolk VA for about three months in 1970. Got to live off-base for a while. No bad memories. Some good ones during that summer. Ended up bringing the USS Sumter from Philly shipyard, through the Panama Canal to home port of Long Beach. If I had a vehicle (the Navy allowed crew members to bring their vehicles aboard and transport them to LB), my Long Beach experience would likely have been different. Otherwise, it was pretty average. Although, recall two great concerts up north at the Forum. Duty at the Naval Support Activity in Seattle was great. Beautiful area, not-overrun, and socialized like today. Relaxed atmosphere on base and worked with a fantastic Chief. Stayed in the area for an additional three years after discharge. Loved the place, but that was before the influx from CA began. Had a very reasonable cost of living before then. The common denominator at each duty station was the group of great friends I was fortunate to find.

Husband is stationed in Virginia (Norfolk to be exact) and at first we hated it. There’s so much crime and yes it’s definitely crowded. But after awhile we started exploring more since we’re gonna be here for awhile. Now we don’t mind it! There’s lots of fishing spots which we love, close beaches, lots of family activities. So if you have kiddos it’ll be fun otherwise I can see why most people who are single or don’t have kids, hate it. Don’t get me wrong though, we can’t wait to move and the school system here is garbage! Lol
