I just wanna point out that Balan turned out as bad as it was not because of Naka's leaving - but because the old geezer had very VERY outdated look on the process of making a fun video-game. I'm a Sonic-fan for more than 20 years already and despite some great ideas, most of the time it was Naka and Sonic-Team JP who were trying to strangle and exploit their workers all around the globe. Yuji Naka is a delusional project manager who thinks he knows best while operating 20-year old principles. And he got just what he deserves: a chance to make his own, not stolen from anyone, game, which he blew and got ridiculed for it. Serves him right for everything he did to Sonic franchise and its potential.

Cyberpunk 2077 wasnt just bad for its glitches (and I'm sad that most people only think of the glitches when its SO much deeper than that), it was bad because of false and broken promises, stripped features like, you know, an actually free and expansive story with choices that mean anything, and a bunch of things, henceforth making it an underwhelming shell that taught me the ever-common lesson that the fans of games like Anthem learned...never be super hyped like that again.

The five games here actually makes an interesting thesis statement. I think everyone has fully accepted that games that promise the world are probably going to be shit, but games that look decent but still end up being terrible are far worse.#4 through 1 are all games that looked alright in their trailers and not "We'll give you the entire planet and a cheesecake" levels of hype. The fact they were lies just makes the deceit all the more... petty, I guess?

The really sad thing is that after Balan Wonderworld flopped, it caused a rift between Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima afterwards. When Yuji Naka recently posted pictures for NiGHTS’ anniversary, he censored out Ohshima and caused people to question what happened, which caused Naka to block those who asked. 😐

@@apollorock3r244 - He’s so difficult to work with that a former head of Sega’s US division left because of him and even told Yuji’s translator (after having a meeting where he refused to be reasonable and unfairly blamed the US division president’s own employees for something they didn’t do because he couldn’t accept that the company wasn’t a big deal anymore) to tell Yuji himself that he said f-you to him. If that doesn’t say someone is a crappy person to be around I don’t know what will.

It's probably my favorite shooter franchise and I don't think my excitement has ever dropped off harder from the initial trailer to when gameplay details started to be released to when the beta footage started rolling out and by the time the game released I just didn't care anymore. Balan Wonderworld wasn't underwhelming by any means... it was overwhelmingly terrible. Someone might say that Battlefield 2042 was the worst game of 2021, but there's a key difference between Battlefield and Balan: Battlefield is a game that could easily be good if it weren't completely broken, while Balan can't be a good game if it wanted to AND it's in an awful state on the Switch and, let's be real, most people who would want to play Balan Wonderworld would probably be Switch users. Battlefield when it was shown off looked fantastic, and I do think that if it just wasn't so glitchy it could be close to what we saw in the marketing, except that it was just stupidly broken. You have a broken game the potential of being good vs a technically OK game with absolutely no chance at being good, and with how gaming has advanced, I'd rather take the game that could be good and just get it patched over time even if it should've been playable from the beginning.

I knew nothing about some of my favorite games prior to buying them. Many of them were just recommended by friends. I feel like that's exceedingly rare. I don't know if it's because information regarding games is so accessible online now, just growing up and generally playing less games, or both. Still sometimes happens, but I almost feel the need to deliberately reduced my exposure. Like, I have yet to watch the Starfield gameplay because I just want to experience the game with zero expectations. I played Morrowind and Fallout 3 with zero knowledge and those are a couple of my favorite games.

TemplarGFX has fixed a lot of the problems with Aliens: Colonial Marines over the years and a lot of the errors, like the laughably bad AI was fixed years ago. One of them originated in a typo in a config file and wasn't fixed in the game's only patch. Version 6.2 of his Overhaul Mod released on July 1 this year, and now the game looks and plays as good as it should have done on release.

To me, Deep Rock Galactic is Evolve, done right. Instead of a 4v1 experience, they dropped the big monster variant and it's just a 4vEnviorment game, but the amount of sheer polish that has gone into making every random group of four players actually be able to work as a cohesive squad is just stunning. Each class has a completely different movement ability that can aid the team, giving each player a niche they can naturally fall into, and an incredibly robust ping system allows players to communicate efficiently even if they aren't using voice or text chat.

For me personally, the biggest disappointment I have ever experienced was with Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach. Three years and two games had been building towards the largest and most ambitious project the franchise had seen yet, only to deliver mediocre gameplay done better by dozens of games before it, a story far too vague even by FNaF standards, unclear mission objectives, annoying enemies and terrible performance issues. Furthermore it was horribly broken on release, to the point that it was essentially impossible to do a playthrough without encountering at least one game-breaking bug. I went into this game with excitement, but left feeling completely hollow and confused.

One example I'd give is Disgaea 1 Complete. As someone who had only paid attention to the cutscenes of the original game on KZbin, I was not prepared by how clunky the first Disgaea game was. Not only does the game still not have the option to skip animations, you can't even reincarnate a character without soloing 3 arbitrary promotion stages every time. But don't be fooled, the promotion stages themselves aren't used to "promote" a generic unit to the next tier of their class- you do that by reincarnating, which will drop their level back to 1. The Dark Assembly also has a really dumb mechanic where random senators will be assigned as soon as you open it and you have to reroll if they aren't influential enough for you to propose a bill. Some stages make me question why they even exist, like one where enemies *and* allies are invincible until you move a geo block on the other side of the map. And that's just some examples of the problems that could also be attributed to the original game that weren't fixed because the subtitle is a lie. Despite being meant to be a remaster, it's really lacking in the presentation department. While *some* of the classic generics in the game have been given an HD sprite, quite a few of them had a modern Disgaea generic sprite slapped on top of them, as if nobody would notice if Manty the Manticore suddenly became a Skeletal Dragon. As for the backgrounds, they straight up left them unremastered.

I'm sorry, but I don't think there's any universe where Balan Wonderworld was any good. Removing Yuji Naka from lead developer is not what caused the game to have sluggish movement or a terrible control scheme. That whole one-button-does-everything design philosophy has always been Naka's goal. I'm sure Square-Enix's greed contributed to the game being even worse, but it was never going to be good. Don't delude yourself.
