To be fair, he used Foul Play, which uses the opponent's (Rhyhorn's) attack stat for the damage calculation rather than the Malamar's. Still, you shouldn't even risk using regular attacking moves when shiny hunting, and stick to attacks with fixed or predictable damage like Seismic Toss, Super Fang or False Swipe.

It's not just false swipe. It's always wise to have mons with either sleep powder, hypnosis, paralyze and mean look Incase they teleport, run away, or have take down. It's not always best to use false swipe first as some encounters could have take down, explosion or use teleport

It would be a bother for most people, you could add it as a option but even those who do shiny hunts would find it anoying. What you need to learn is to confirm at least 3 times it isn't a shiny before to rune away or restart. The first time it is posible that you just think it as a habit without really checking, the second time it is still probably that you just repeat without checking, it is hard that in the third time it still happens.

A few counters to these mistakes: Take Down: Ghost type Critical hits: False swipe/Hold Back Accidentally running: Pay attention. Accidentally soft resetting: Pay attention. Misclick: Pay attention. Explosion: Damp. Teleport: Arena Trap. Suicide moves (Final Gambit/Parting Shot/Healing Wish): Taunt, but for damaging suicide moves, is the shiny worth it? No PC box space: I'm so sorry. Important steps to remember when shiny hunting: - Start hunting in a "safe spot" where you can't drop your DS. - Make sure you have plenty of Pokeballs, and good variety of them too (PokeBall aesthetics are awesome, but don't prioritize them over the shiny Pokemon). - Make sure you have box space before hand. - Have enough strong Pokemon, definitely have one with a status move like Thunder Wave or Sleep Powder. Heal if you ever run into trouble and have a large amount of party members (preferably a full party of six). - Know the Pokemons move set, and make sure they don't run out of PP and use Struggle (generally best to have a Leppa Berry and Executor Harvest Skill Swap plan set up) - Know the OTHER POKEMONS ABILITY AND MOVES. So many people have failed Pokemon like Whimpod because of this... people also don't realize that Pokemon have moves like Roar, Self Destruct, Perish Song, and Head Smash until the shiny shows up because no research was done before hand. For Pokemon with the moves Teleport, have a Mon with the Arena Trap (only works for GROUNDED Pokemon) ability or a Pokemon who also knows Teleport use the move Imprison on the field (keep in mind, if you use the Imprison stratz you CANNOT switch out after you use it, or the effort will won't work anymore). - Stay aware of weather conditions (hail, sand) and prepare for them (have Pokemon that change the weather if it's possible) - Have chip damage moves, like Sonic Boom or Super Fang, while remaining aware of their movesets. False Swipe is a commonly used move, but i would advise against using it in almost any case. False Swipe is a very big shiny Pokemon killer. - Do NOT have a Pokemon with the Ability Pressure or Super Luck, and don't use moves that can have higher Critical Hits chances. - Take "dangerous" moves on your Pokemon and move them far away from the first move slot. Have status and chip moves availible instead on the first move slot, so you dont misclick. - Build habits as you are shiny hunting! Habits should include glancing at the Pokemon BEFORE hitting the SR and Run buttons. This makes it more difficult to fail the Pokemon. - Pay attention to the sparkles / different coloring. You have no idea how easy it is to zone out or not realize it's a shiny. - PRACTICE. CATCHING. THE POKEMON. Practice doesn't make perfect, but it makes you PREPARED. It lets you know how ready you are to encounter it, and let's you plan out *several* strategies when you encounter it. And make sure you do it more than once, so you're prepared for many different situations (this also helps with knowing the movepool and any "dangerous" moves on the Pokemon you're seeking). - Be careful which buttons you press. You can become numb the SR / Run process and press the wrong move, buttons, or item. - Make sure your console doesn't run out of battery, and charge it when it is low. - SAVE when you get the Shiny, probably do it more than once. - And most importantly, DON'T GET COCKY. Just because you found the shiny does not mean it's yours. You have to go through the process of catching it and saving before it is truly yours. Remember guys, there are SO many things that go wrong with Shiny Hunting and catching in general. It's best to prepare as much as you can, because if you don't, you could only be wasting your time in the long run. And even then, you can still get really unlucky and fail a shiny anyways. It's best to know that shiny hunting is difficult and luck based, and you can fail one or find one at any moment. But don't be discouraged! If you prep, it is highly likely you will find and catch that Pokemon. Good luck to all of you Shiny Hunters, and have fun!

What this has taught me when I begin to shiny hunt is to..... 1. Tailor make a team for capturing Pokemon with moves like, Hypnosis, Sleep spore, Mean look, False Swipe, etc. 2. Remain calm and pay close attention to what you are doing so that you don't accidentally kill, run away or soft reset your game. 3. Once caught, save ASAP and rename them later. 4. Make sure your bank has the space for any new captures. 5. Keep in mind that nothing is guaranteed, and that despite careful preparation you can still fail a shiny.

Look up the movesets of the shiny you find and come prepared. Knows a self damaging move? Just paralyze/sleep it and throw balls at it or use a ghost type if the pokemon has takedown. Worried about a legendary struggling? Keep track of the amount of moves it has left til it struggles and have a pokemon with heal pulse to heal it up.Make sure you have enough leppas/elixirs to never run out of pp.

It's painfully ironic that the same habit that allows players to SR or chain thousands of times to eventually get a shiny spawn is the same one that time and again screws them out of it. A lot of these are examples of it. Their hands automatically press the button combination to Soft Reset or Run Away. They do this hundreds or even thousand of times. It becomes muscle memory. It becomes a habit so automatic it happens without conscious thought. Streaming or talking to their friends while shiny hunting helps make it more bearable, but this only adds to the problem. You divide your attention between the stream audience and the game by SR or running away without thinking about it over and over and over again. So when one finally does appear, the very habit that made it so comes back to bite you in the ass unless you're actually paying strict attention and not allowing the muscle memory of thousand of escape/SR to control your actions when it matters most.

It isn't FalseSwipe fault, but with those certain pokémon you need to do something like sleep it first, use a ghost tipe pokémon or directly try a quickball. It is important that you know what attacks the pokemon are you looking for usually use to know In order to stop it from killing itselft.

Rubber bands hold down L + R to make SRing quicker, if you're inputting a nickname and hit start, then it'll soft reset. Always take the rubber bands off during the encounter folks!

How not to fail a shiny: 1) Stay Calm 2) Stay Focused 3) Know your target i.e.: -If your targets gets a normal-type recoil move, bring a ghost -If your target knows a non-normal recoil move, you could give it the rock head ability... -If your target knows any suicidal moves, bring Taunt -If your target is immune to False Swipe, you have two options: 1) Throw balls and pray, or 2) hit it with a REALLY weak move you're certain won't kill even if its a crit. I recommend you do 1 -If your target is part of a horde of pokemon that know a move that hurts their ally, skill swap Telepathy onto them (You can get a Telepathy+SkillSwap Beheeyem with relative ease) -If you're in the safari zone, make sure you've made your prayers
