Three Moves for Marimba and From My Little Island so low after saying you haven't listened to them is actually insanity. Three Moves is recognized as one of the hardest marimba pieces by most colleges/competitions. That's actually crazy you put them so low lmao. Great video! From experience, I would def move Aldridge and Lansky up. I did Lansky for my masters auditions. The first movement is deceptively difficult, because of range jumping, intervals, and constant motion. From just listening, it sounds easier because it's so groovy. And the third mvt is an absolute BALL BUSTER. I'm not a fan of the 2and mvt, I actually reallyyyy wish it was a chorale. And just for perspective, I played the pius piece my 2nd year of undergrad. I know the Aldridge calls for 10ths in 1 hand. I havent played it, but based on others experiences, I would make that at least A tier.
@RARZMusic4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Mvt Vl: Sweet Song from Aldridge has a lot of ninths and a few tenths.
@克立张3 жыл бұрын
druckman is WAY harder than a B Aldridge is also significantly harder than a B. Lansky way harder than a B. Zivkovic I think is harder than a B as well. Knowing some of these pieces better and checking some of the rep lists for universities might help you thin out your B section!

I think that this tier list is really solid but there are a few things in the C tier I would have moved to the B tier (Land, Wind, Strive to be happy). I have played both Furioso (Keep in mind, I didn't play it up to tempo, but still) and Strive to be happy, and can say with certainty that I don't think they should be on the same tier (at least relative to each other), but in general it makes sense. I think having another tier like an E or F would have helped make things more specific and removed the overflow in the B tier. Overall, I agree with everything in the S tier and general placement of the pieces (especially the D teir lol) but there were just a few minor tweeks. No hate on Adam, this is purely my opinion and I think that this video is really great! I would love to see a top 100 rendition of this in the near future, with even more of his great content to watch!
@AdamTanPercussion4 жыл бұрын
Yes more tiers would have made sense haha, I started off thinking I'd do 20 and then ended up doing 50... It's interesting that all the 'most popular' solos are mostly B-tier intermediate solos, which made me realise that it's because many people don't pursue marimba past that point (e.g. because of slowing down or choosing a different career).
@jonrattenborg19074 жыл бұрын
@@AdamTanPercussion Its really interesting to think about it that way since most people who play mallets in high school would probably be able to play B tier pieces by the time they graduate, and then most don't end up going to music school. It goes to show why pieces are commonly written at that level, as they can attract to both advanced and intermediate players alike. That's a really good point!

I'll happily admit that I severely underrated Bach in undergrad... I was never interested in the music. Now I'm taking on the Well Tempered Clavier and uhhh yeah.... it's insane. Play Bach. It will make people better players. And this is probably just because i'm working on it right now and it's thoroughly kicking my butt, but I disagree with the Canon in D placement. Even though I agree with you that it's literally just a harder Canon in D. Idk I guess I just really like Canon in D.
@AdamTanPercussion4 жыл бұрын
Haha Bach is always life changing the first time you do it! Fair enough man, would agree that Transformation is still really hard. I'm not a fan of Canon after playing it countless times at various weddings hahaha

as someone who has performed marimba spiritual and is currently working on the druckman, the druckman should definitely go in S tier. Might not necessarily be the most technique driven piece but the level of maturity required to play it is very high, although it's certainly not the most impressive piece of music if you are unfamiliar with the challenges of learning it

The Aldridge isn't meant to be played straight through. It's seven movements and the performer picks a suite to perform. Most end up doing four of the movements. It's also a really solid piece that I think you would enjoy if you ever get the chance to spend more time with it. Also the only time I was almost upset was Variations on Lost Love and your little note made it better. I almost feel like it's S tier but A is a solid placement.

I‘m happy with your list... but c‘mon... Rhythm Song has to be in B! It‘s a hard piece if you play it on a good flowing tempo and there are some hard parts! If you really work out the little melodies and the rhythm structures in the different patterns, it can be a very interisting piece! The fact that many people play it... nah... doesn‘t mean its not that interesting that it could be. 😘 Love for Paul Smadbeck!
