One more for your list: "North and South" starring Richard Armitage and Daniella Denby Ashe. It's about a London gentlewoman who is forced by circumstances to move to Milton, an industrial town in northern England. She clashes with a mill owner (Armitage) about worker's rights and class issues. It's a love story, too. And you can stare at the gorgeous Mr. Armitage for four hours.

Versailles is spectacular. The costumes and setting are amazing. The story has everything- love, honor, betrayal, political and court intrigue and at the heart of the story- the incredibly layered Louis the 14th who is both kind and cruel. …and bonus- the leading men in this show are beautiful! Louis, Philippe, Chevalier and the sexy, brooding Fabian Marchal make for some stunning eye candy.

Can I interest you in the Spanish TV series "Isabel" and its sequel, "Carlos, Rey Emperador"? "Isabel" is, of course, about the rise of Isabella the Catholic to power as well as her reign alongside her husband, Ferdinand of Aragon. "Carlos, Rey Emperador", meanwhile, is about their grandson Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. There's also the movie La Corona Partida, which takes place in the years between Isabel and Carlos. They're not always the most accurate of shows but goddamn do they make good TV and they're three of my most favorite period dramas of all time. 🤩 Apart from those three, I also recommend Maximilian, a three episode German-Austrian miniseries about the romance and marriage of Maximilian of Austria and Mary of Burgundy (Charles V's grandparents). 😄

You missed Charite (pre-WWII) and it's sequel series (Charite at War - WWII, Charite Cold War, etc.). They're set at the Charite hospital in Berlin before, during, and after WWII as you see the rise of anti-semitism in Germany and the effects of the war on the staff at the hospital. It's really good and has a very narrow, but interesting focus.

Some of us watch historic dramas because they are dramatized history--not for the romance; so I'm always checking the accuracy, and a lot of these just are not. The Crown is a bit of a mix--enjoyable, but check facts after each episode. Sanditon is pretty awful, not accurate to the book or to the period. There are three mystery series that are accurate down to the last detail of their period, and those are the Poirot episodes with David Suchet; the Miss Marple stories with Joan Hickson; and the Sherlock Holmes dramas with Jeremy Brett.

'Becoming Elizabeth' was full of ridiculous inaccuracies and a mediocre central performance by the actress playing Elizabeth (note to all actresses aspiring to climb this Mt Everest of acting, there is the perfect 'Elizabeth' standard against which ye shall all be judged, the Glenda Jackson portrayal of the greatest monarch England has ever seen).

I liked the actress that played Elizabeth. Even if it was creative license, I like to think we were where all idiotic teenagers once.... even Queen Elizabeth I.
@allegory6393
@allegory6393 2 ай бұрын
@@PrincessPlotline The problem with that is that we know (letters exist) the adolescent Elizabeth while dependent on that couple (Parr and Thomas Seymour) also feared Seymour's advances, and did not wish to be touched by him. He wanted to force himself on her (his biggest love was his reckless ambition) to get into position of claiming the crown from the young, and dependent on Seymour's brother, king Edward VI. The fact this series romanticised the fears of being sexually abused, and turned it into some grand passion the young Elizabeth must have felt is preposterous (and reprehensible). Also, Elizabeth was notoriously cautious from a very young age, since she knew that the mere fact of her still being alive was due to a miracle. Even before she went to live with the Parr-Seymours, she wrote that she knew all eyes were on her and that she was constantly watched. She wasn't just like any other teenager (neither was her sister Mary when she was a teenager), because few teenagers grow in such perilous circumstances, where your life depends on which way the political die will roll, nor have there been many adolescents so tightly watched and spied upon. There is no way she would have displayed the behaviour they make her display here (especially given the common beliefs about her mother, and the constant questioning of Elizabeth's own legitimacy). As for the actress, she did not capture the terror the young Elizabeth had to navigate every day of her life, nor Elizabeth's scholarly and witty nature, nor her famous and well-documented cautiousness from a very early age. All this series was interested in was a ridiculous and fake romance slapped on Elizabeth. We only know of one great love Elizabeth Tudor had (although we have no proof of sexual relations, however, if someone suggested that there were such, it would sound plausible), and that would be her love for Robert Dudley.

@@allegory6393 I understand your concerns, and why you can't enjoy this show. As I'm not a history buff... I don't mind alternate interpretations of history. Specially with events that took place such a long time ago. Even now, with all the "traces" people leave behind when they die (social media, computer files, etc) you can never truly know someone. A lot of people fill pages and pages of social media and paint an unreal picture of their lives. If Elizabeth was such a careful person, and she felt she was being watched all the time, it's not that farfetched to think that she could also believe someone would read her letters. She could have lied. Or you could be right. But we can't be 100% sure. I'm willing to suspend disbelief.
@allegory6393
@allegory6393 2 ай бұрын
@@PrincessPlotline With all due respect, it is not an ‘alternate interpretation of history’ (such happen all the time in the discipline of history, as current concerns spur re-interpretations of the past (however remote). ‘Becoming Elizabeth’ fabricates facts and places them in the place of facts we know and have evidence for. It is one thing to speculate from known facts to plausible dramatisations (that is what the best historical fiction and period dramas do) and it is another to fabricate an alternative reality where anything goes, every lie and falsehood is endorsed and allowed to run berserk. Not once did I feel the young Elizabeth was scared for her life, aware of the proximity of violent death (as the real Elizabeth was), forced to grow wise beyond her years. Nor did her scholarly charisma come out. She was accomplished at a very early age. Instead we saw a woman very obviously in her late 20s-early 30s (they should have found an actress that looked like the one who played Jane Grey) behaving like a silly girl without a care in the world.

what most of these shows has that bridgerton dont is the constant fear and betrail witch makes the dramas to hard to watch at least for me. bridgerton can be watched by everyone except children because of the sexscenes. but i love the positive vibe of the show. i think almost all tv series now a days lack the simple storylines witch pull on your heart. that´s why i like watching older tv series like dr quinn medicine woman or shows like that who also have a lot of sentimental and slow build love stories. also a show like girlmore girls has the same. so i think that is the reason why bridgerton is so loved in this time. i don´t think i have been able to watch all seasons of any newer shows on netflix. if it has more than 3 seasons the show tend to be to deperate to create new drama that it ruin the vibe of the show. and again i didn´t se that change with bridgerton. GOT was also amazing at withholding the audience the last show i watched til the end. even if the ending dissaointed me. the only two dramas on this list that is worth watching based on what i just said is the Grand Hotel it´s build slowly and you can really feel the amazing chemestry between the male and female lead. also there is drama but it´s the same flow all the way through. the same with the amazing story of Anne with an E that show is so emotional and beautiful to watch. But i have not watched all the series on this list so if you recommend another show with the same feeling i mentioned i would love to watch it.

I can't say that I agree with your analysis... but when you mentioned Gilmore Girls I instantly knew which show I would suggest: All Creatures Great and Small. It might not sound interesting at first (late 1930s... young vet moves to a small village and starts working at a country practice), but the show is truly beautiful. The town has a very "stars-hollowy" feeling, I loved all the characters because of how "real" they feel. All the storylines are simple and unforced, but very charming. It's one of my comfort tv shows... and I believe James Herriot has a lot in common with Dr Quinn (except he works with animals and not humans). If you get a chance to watch it, I hope'll you'll let me know if you enjoy it.
