One very important car not mentioned here is the Peugeot saviour, the 205. Huge part of its success was the Group B 205 T16, which became the most successful car in Group B World Rally Championship. Group B's immense popularity and the success of the 205 T16, winning the driver's and the constructor's title in both full seasons it contested, made the 205 sales sky rocket, which saved the struggling Peugeot from going under. Cool to see one of my favorite brands was saved by one of my favorite cars of my favorite motorsport.
@iankemp1131
@iankemp1131 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm, the 205 was a great car, but not sure that the rally success was what drove it. Even now I remember the "Oh, what a feeling, the 205" TV ads that made a mere number sound exciting. Then it won Car of the Year etc. Because it was simply incredibly well designed. Plenty of them were going strong when 20+ years old (my wife had one and we often saw others of similar vintage). One typical detail design point; wheel arches with no recesses where mud could build up, hence no rust in this usually weak spot for so many cars. And of course every boy racer wanted the 1.9 GTi.

The DB7's front end styling became some of the most influential ever, through a process that was somewhat controversial. Ford's styling department designed it for Aston-Martin and it became a very distinctive hit. During the 2000s Ford sold Aston-Martin and started using the same theme on their own cars. Aston-Martin was pissed but without a legal leg to stand on since the original styling was done by Ford.

FYI... While the Isetta kept BMW solvent in the 1950s, the company was in dire straights by the mid-1960s (again). The 1500 got the company re-directed, then the 1602 and (2 years later) 2002 brought the company to true profitability. There have been a few hiccups since, but nothing like the old days. Plus, the 1602/2002 were both splendid cars to drive; something nobody ever accused the Isetta of being.

How can you Not include the VW GOLF, or "Rabbit" as I think it's called in the U.S..? I recall reading somewhere that Volkswagen being hit with declining sales of it's original air-cooled rear engine, rear wheel drive, "Beetle" 2 Door sedan, even with the later versions, desperately needed a new affordable car. They turned to an Italian designer(maybe Pininfarina?) who produced an angular even "boxy" looking, water cooled front engined, front wheel drive 4/5 seater sub-compact. It was a stark contrast to the German Automakers' previous designs to say the least, but with German build quality and sporting performance in the "GTI" models, went on to become a Top Selling small car in Europe and then across the globe. Without the "Golf/Rabbit" for VW., there may well not have been any new Lambo's, Skoda's or even Bentleys, to mention just a few...
@reynardkitsune1
@reynardkitsune1 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, the design of the Golf was done by Giugiaro. The angular design was a result of the demand for simplified production as the use of lead to smoothen body countours was not only expensive but became prohibited for the reasons of endangering the health of workers and crashworthiness. Fun fact: Before the decisionmakers had the good sense of dubbing the car "Golf", it was named "Blizzard" - no joke.

For a couple of weeks both of my parents were driving it. When I finally drove it in early July that same year. I totaled it by hitting a deer the 2nd time on December 8 or 9th, 2016. The Lamborghini Gallardo is a pretty sexy car. Plus it performs well. I know a few people who have owned them. Plus they were all over New York City when I was a kid

Emperor Pu Yi's Buick that you show on 1:01 is a Packard...

At 1:03 the Buick Regal is in fact a Packard. My neighbour had Packards for years. Maybe just an editing error, or sound track synchronisation problem.

honestly, i think the 1st gen cayenne is good. it focused more on the offroading than the luxury and speed, unlike some others, e.g. the mercedes g-wagon, the only offroading g-wagons do is jumping a kerb. Sure, the cayenne might be ugly, but just go to a bodyshop and have the whole front fixed or something like that

Honorable mention. The Pinto did not save Ford, but this little car did do something unique. It saved the Mustang. In the Seventies during the oil Embargo, one of two things were the choices for the Mustang. Either get fuel efficient, or be cancelled. Ford built the Mustang Two on the Pinto platform and two other cars. The Maverick as a family car and the Mustang Two Ghia as the Company's Mustang Luxury car. Without the Pinto, the Mustang would have never saw the Fox body third generation. And there would have not been a Mustang for Carrol Shelby to revitalize when he was finished working at Dodge/Chrysler. And if that hadn't Then The Fifth Gen would have never been built, the two Brothers from Florida would not have a platform to built modern Trans/Am(s) off of. And what about the modern Challenger Charger Hellcat or Hellephant? No, that would not have happened either. You have a lot to thank this little car for including the fact that it shares a certain problem with the first Mustangs that it took 100% of the blame for, and yes I mean the explosive one. And Lambo was somewhat profitable for Chrysler. From parts sharing and especially the engine, The Viper was possible for the Company.

I'm sad that chrysler turned the new yorker into a kei car. from the 50's when it was introduced to the 70's, it was like an affordable luxury muscle car.

Buick and Oldsmobile are alive because of the Chinese market as it's seen as status by the younger generation ❤. Volkswagen was saved by the original Beetle and in the 1970s, by the Golf.
