The Pinto was a sales success it's entire run. There isn't an automaker around today or in the 1970's that wouldn't kill for the Pinto's sales numbers. It averaged 317,349 cars sold each year for 10 years. Not only was it the #1 sub-compact car in America, but its sales eclipsed those of all makes of all other imports combined. Only in 1981 did Chevy overtake Ford with the Chevette, and only for that year. Once again, in 1982, the Ford Escort regained the top spot in the market segment and would hold onto it until 1987. The fact that the gas tank was behind the axle (in front of the bumper) wasn't the issue. This was common for sub-compacts. It was the fact that having discovered that the tank could be ruptured by some bolts on the axle in a rear-end accident, and it would cost roughly $11 to mitigate the issue, Lee Iacocca personally made the call not to fix it before the car was introduced. Thus, Lee Iacocca put profits before personal safety. Also, there were between 70-117 deaths as a result of Pinto accidents. There were only 117 lawsuits against Ford (settled or otherwise), and 2 of them were by third parties indirectly impacted. Unless you think there are 383 families that didn't care enough about their dead family members to sue Ford for damages. The Pinto had fewer fatalities than the Toyota Corolla, the Volkswagen Beetle, or the Datsun 1200/210 during that same time. The Pinto, by contrast, had slightly more than average fatalities as a result of fires during rear-end collisions. More people died in a Corolla, a Beetle, or a 1200/210, but the Pinto had a more than average number of fatalities as a result of fires during a rear-end collision. It doesn't even mean that no other car had any, just that the Pinto had a few more than most. I would love for you to explain in what way was the Ford Pinto a failure. Sales it was #1. Marketing/PR, any damage on Ford's reputation was short lived. Fatality rates weren't worse than the competition overall and were only slightly worse in one segment. Design wise, it wasn't a failure in engineering because the engineers identified the issue prior to release of the product and every other sub-compact placed the gas tank behind the axle. Even when you calculate the number of fatalities, compared to the competition, the Pinto wasn't the deadliest car to drive. So, what's your criteria for failure?
@petertoth34772 жыл бұрын
The Aztec looks like a car a 50 year old chemistry teacher with lung cancer would drive. I like the features though. Further more: 1. At the time the Koral, Skala, the 128, 101 was made (the same period the GV depicted in this video was made, or in the 80's and 90's) Yugoslavia was Socialist country, hence the name S. F. R. J. or: Socialistic Federative Republic of Yugoslavia, and not the Comunistic one. 2. I've never seen a Yugo use more than 6 Liters of fuel, not even the 1.3 L version of it with 65 hp. which at the time was more than a respectable displacement to power ratio and 3. My first car was a Zastava 128 (a version of a Yugo) that was ridiculously reliable and simple. Once i had it clog up the fuel filter, and stop in 7 years i drove it, for more than 100 000 km.

The editing alone in this video would be a "10". Then add GREAT research of the list of bad cars, and you have a BRILLIANTLY entertaining video! HIGH PRAISE for this captivating, interesting, and entertaining video :-) Well done!

I see no pt cruiser mentioned in the video proving just how much more reliable and boss ass my silver bullet is. Sure it's not fast or quick accelerating but it is a tough one. Having slid off the road at 55 mph in icy conditions because I wasn't driving smart, it only suffered a busted radiator and a flat tire. If anything my Chrysler proved more than its worth to me that day.

The Pinto was a sales success, and sold in huge numbers for 10 years. For the past 18 years I have been driving a 1972 Pinto woodgrain wagon. It's 39 years old and still solid as a rock. It is the most dependable and reliable car I have ever owned.

much of the op comments on what happened regarding the pinto are incorrect, too (in particular, the "cost per life" evaluation reference)....the correct information is as close as wikipedia

The Ford Pinto is even used in Stephen King's novel Cujo as a bad car that causes a lot of problems for the protagonists.
