A lesson I wished I learned early on. When budgeting for any used vehicle, ad a figure to put aside for repairs, all private sale used bikes come with immediate issues (even if its only a chain + cog swap)...Don't just budget for a purchase price. Check EVERYTHING, wait till winter for a bargain and take your time...I waited 2 months till the right bike came along last time. Every time i've rushed to buy used, it bit me in the ass. Patience gets the best bike for the deal.

I disagree on the recommendation to sell OEM parts. When the time comes to sell that bike, many buyers want a completely stock bike. When the time comes to sell, one can re-install the OEM parts and include the after-market parts in a box or sell them separately.

Depends on the buyer IMO. Having the aftermarket parts installed WITH the oem parts in a box would be preferable.

I own 8 bikes currently. A bike that appears to be unmolested by Amazon parts and shade tree work is always worth more. Unless you have receipts where reputable builders/shops etcetera did the work. Because sure you can wrench. But do I know if you did it right? A guy who bought a bike and had all services done at the dealership is the best used bike to buy. The dealerships have the proper parts and tools. They require certification for wrenching. And actual high performance mods are a red flag. No one puts a stretched swingarm, full exhaust, and bottle fed for Sunday go to meeting. Means they dogged the shit out of it. And you are financing their new go fast toy. Now obviously there are differences. You win a bike from the Yamster. You know how it is cause he did videos of it. But rando off the net? Nah OEM is the way to go.

the riding modestly thing is no joke. It also helps you develop fine control. Being able to go fast in a straight line doesnt make you a good rider, but being able to navigate a cruiser through a busy mall parking lot without putting feet down will make you better at all the other things you need to do while riding.

Proper tyres, brakes and gear are indeed the best mod you can do, even so as a beginner. When i swapped out my worn tyres to new ones, my bike like instantly became safer and more enjoyable to ride. Also i agree about riding modestly, i get about 39 mpg combined on my 600cc ZZR. It`s a carburated bike and i run the new E10 gasoline in it.

Smaller displacement is great. I own: 1. Honda VTR250 2. Yamaha SR400 3. Suzuki GS500E (1990 - still original) Barely any electronics on these - you just need a spanner set to work on them. Some people may be concerned with smaller motorcycles as some people may be on the taller/larger side - if this helps anyone I'm 6'1 and 80kg, I don't look like a mega-giant on these motorcycles and they're still enough power to overtake on the highways!

Yammi isn't wrong about buying a used bike. It's a lot cheaper. I got my first bike a ktm 390 adventure 2 months ago and I bought it brand new. Cost me like 9,000 out the door when it was being advertised for 7,000 bucks. The problem with buying used though is that you might just be buying someone else's problem and if your not mechanically inclined or know a lot about bikes, you might not even know it.

I found my first bike in the garbage In Detroit i went to the door to make sure they was really throwing it out and they said, yep we got it for our son 10 years ago and he never road it. They said hang on we will get you the keys and the title. We took it home to ky and went through the carburetors and rebuilt them and cleaned a bunch of gunk and leaves out of the exhaust and I rode it for years! It was a Honda 2 stroke with a dirt bike back tire and a street tire on the front! Had a Speedo and tack! I think it was a 185cc if I remember correctly been a long time ago back in the 80’s and it was a 70’s small 2 stroke bike!

I think you do too many beginner bike videos. I know that it's because you are an analytics 304, but it is annoying and involves less effort. This is one of the better ones. Love the Bandit 600 thumbnail, looks almost like the B12 I built from totes. Bikes with fairings typically have higher performance parts than their naked counterparts. For a bike that might get dropped by a new rider or an old bike with missing or damaged fairings, fairings are an unneeded hassle. A costly one too. I paid TOO MUCH for trim and fairing parts on an otherwise cheap 97' RF900R. If you want to paint your old naked bike there are only about three or four pieces. OEM parts in many cases are better quality than aftermarket parts, cheaper too. I bought everything that hit the floor from a bike breaker for my B12 tote build for about $50. It was a lot of stuff and I have used most of it. Older bikes often are a pure experience. No ABS, no complicated computer shennanigans. Simple small engines. They are a great place to learn mechanic skills. You don't need as many lifting tools as cars and one person can manage almost everything without help. Smaller bikes on the used market are not necessary cheaper. They'll have less use and generally be in better shape. You could get a big bike for about the same cash. How often do you have to update the mileage on your Voom insured bikes (multi-bike)? Boomers? Some Gen Xers too. I was alive before the internet! We all used forums before social media groups. They are still better organized for research. I think a new rider could blow a lot of cash on a custom seat and it still be a good mod. If the saddle isn't comfortable you won't ride as much, period. New riders need experience. Definitely ride within the limits of your skill level. I made a tight right turn leaving work today and was a little bit aggressive with it. I felt the front slide a little on some sand or gravel that I didn't see. If I had not been as aggressive it would have probably rolled over it instead of slide. Didn't panic or anything, but a new rider can be challenged by sudden losses of traction. Wrecking motorcycles can't be much fun despite Gixxer Brah's antics.
