Michael Rosenbaum was such a supremely excellent Lex, managed to capture so much depth of character, expression, and even humanity. He portrayed the gray area of Lex's moral compass so damn well. I like the show as a whole very much, but he was definitely the main reason that my dad and I watched the show.

it truly humanised the characters and made them all likeable and interesting, like lex could've easily just been an ass from the start and clark could've just been doing his superman thing right away but the time that they took to develop and make real characters shows just how much everyone wanted the show to be good. I wasn't always a fan of everything that they did with Smallville, but that scene at Lionel's grave when Lex flashes that brief smile, is in my opinion perhaps the best moment in any Superman version ever. That split second was filled with so many possible meanings. Was he looking back on their friendship and thinking what could have been, was he thinking of the future battles between them, probably a bit of both. Amazing, really.

Why they never cast Michael Rosenbaum as Lex in the cinematic DC movies I will never know. He would have blown us away with his Lex in Batman VS Superman instead of Jesse Eisenbergs very bad attempt at the character. Jesse seemed to think he was doing the Joker character, it was cringe worthy to watch. Kevin Spacey did ok in Superman Returns and he is one of my favourite actors but I still think Michael is by FAR the best Lex Luthor I have seen to date.

Really Tired 64 Nah, that’s not it. Krypton technology and energy is self sustaining and efficient. Jonathan was 100% in a few days. In Smallville Jonathan died bcuz Clark went back in time to save Lana. In doing so created a loophole where the Universal Karma had to right itself, otherwise it would have created a flashpoint of an untold number of people’s deaths of friend foe loved one or stranger. In order to correct the rift that had been undone by Clark, the Universal energy cosmic construct killed Jonathan in substitute for Lana. In Christopher Reeves’ Superman Movie Just b4 Jonathan collapsed, he muttered “Oh no.” No how many times I go over that scene, I always felt like Jonathan knew his time with Marth & Clark had run out. The way Jonathan said those words.. it felt as though he had made a deal with some Otherworldly force or unknown entity to extend life beyond it’s natural state. Go back and watch that scene closely, I’m tellin you guys, somethin about that scene right there selves off into a much deeper meaning & purpose. Somethin similar to the Superhuman or Supernatural. Jonathan knew exactly what was goin on, he looked shocked as if what happened to him were sooner than expected. Shoutout to Ma Kent, Pa Kent, & Teenage Clark Kent. If it weren’t for those characters.. especially teenage Clark, he created the build up to establish Christopher Reeve as Superman.

This clip just reminded me why I loved this show so much...!!! Lex was hands down the BEST...!!! Him and Lionel made the show work. Like true villains, "Nobody that is evil thinks of themselves as evil..." They always think they are doing good, from a certain point of view. Lionel and Lex both thought they were making the world a better place. Both thought they could make their mark. Its really funny how Clark is essentially the bad guy, because he pushes Lex away. If only he knew, and could be in the circle of trust. But that is what the show like you to believe that things like Fate, or Destiny....have a sick sense of humor.
@goffed115 жыл бұрын
Clark is the mos dihonest person in the world, he lies like the sun shines, thats why lex turned
@AzguardMike7 жыл бұрын
lex played the misguided hero so well. Lionel wanted him to be this cold hearted ruthless buisnessman. And Lex just wanted his dad to love him. He found a brother in Clark replacing his dead one Julian. And the Kent family were sort of the family he never had. When he was disowned by Lionel for a short period he lived in the barn, lifting hay and cleaning up cow poop. He didnt complain and even Johnathan said he respected Lex for that. If Clark had told Lex around that time he had powers, that Lex was always right from day 1 about him saving him at the damn. Maybe then when Lionel realized Clark was Kal-el the Luthors and Kents could have been a real power family couple. Its just interesting that after the whole destroying the fortress scene and his eventual return in the season 10 finale he just flat out says "we have a destiny....only on opposite sides." I was like "dude you got a second chance, let him save the world and be there for him. Dont go all "i am the villain because of reasons" But sadly he does. But Michael does an amazing job portraying the anti hero turned villain.
@Stuart2674 жыл бұрын
When I first watched this episode when Lex said "I love you like a brother Clark" I remember tearing up, after everything we learned about Lex during the shows run I found myself hating Clark at certain points for how much he deceived Lex & kept him at arms length like most people did his entire life, no wonder he became so resentful towards Clark he was just like everyone else Lex had known, they all mistrusted him, but Clark's pushed him into the darkside
@adesolajohnson4511 Жыл бұрын
C’mon mehn, Clark ain’t to be blamed for how lex turned out. If lex wasn’t so obsessed with what didn’t matter and looked on to what was important, he would have remained Clark’s trusted friend and ally Also we can blame lex’s dad for turning him into a monster. I mean if Lionel had raised him right, Lex wouldn’t have become the man he is. Lex was heading toward a dark path before he met Clark. Clark being in his life would have refrained lex from dark side but the only mistake clark made was giving up on lex too soon Either ways. Underneath all that evil, lex was just a victim of circumstance. It shows that even the worst of human beings are still human
@TheNyxmaster Жыл бұрын
Lex is the monster he is in large part because of his own choices... the entire show is about one choosing his destiny despite the circonstances. A along you see hints of a Clark Kent turning into a monster : people who want to control him because of his power, to use him because of his personality, to kill him because he's an alien, to discredit him because he is a hero... And pf course, Clark has love and friends, you can credit Jonathan Kent a little, but it's mainly because of his personality... Lex is loveless and lonely, you can blame Lionel Luthor of course, but it's mainly because of his personality.

I don't understand when people hate on live action comic films and shows based on the fact that they're not the EXACT same stories as they are in the comics. WHY wouldn't you want to watch a story unfold that you've never heard/read? Why do you want the story to be the exact same cannon that you've read a hundred times? Smallville pretty much included every interesting thing there is about Superman, spun in their own storylines. You want the storylines in the comics you grew up with? You guys do realize that DC worked directly with CW on Smallville? They had tons of DC support, writers, artists etc that would have to often pass or fail an idea for it to make the show. They didn't just come up with a ton of random shit, lol. It was expertly crafted, especially for the very limited budget the CW/WB gave them. In the end most of CW budget went to shit shows like Vampire Shitaries, even Supernatural suffered from the budget cuts so they could keep creating horrible shows. Thankfully now Supernatural and Arrow are top notch and nobody even cares about any other CW show, and if they do they're 12 year old kids. :P Smallville for life. Even its down-moments were excellent. That's just me, though.

And Lionel's arc from being the only person you know you can't trust to the person who had Clarks best intentions the whole time

There's a part of me that wanted, at least this version of him, Lex to know Clark was The Blur/Red-Blue Blur. Because at least this version of Lex grew up with comics, like superhero comics. He still might've tried to bring Clark over to the dark side, but Clark could've brought Lex over to the light.

My biggest regret of this show was never having Bruce Wayne in it. I had a scene in Lexcorp where Bruce and Lex are discussing business and Clark walks in and the 2 shake hands. Would of been so great. I know the comics had Batman in it but that was the comics.

The grave scene between Lex and Clark is one the best acting moments because they didn't say one thing they spoke by just moving and looking at each other.
@otacon8us11 жыл бұрын
Man, why did Michael Rosenbaum leave the show?
@ScrubNigel10 жыл бұрын
It dragged on for too long. He didn't really fill any purpose in many of the episodes. Clark walks right in (nobody ever asks for permission to come into Lex's mansion), yells at him, then leaves. Repeat. That said, his scenes (along with Martha, Lionel and Jonathan) were the scenes that made the show worth watching, even though they seldom did much for the plot. Zod was pretty good too, but not as good (especially when compared to Terrence Stamp).

Why did he only pick the moments when lex was a douche (for good reason)? The most powerful moments in smallville were seeing the good in lex and how Clark and Lionel were 100% responsible for his villainy
@derekmathews18189 жыл бұрын
+NeonTime, that is ABSOULETELY false! Lex Luthor was a flawed person WAY before he ever met Clark. You can't blame somebody else for how you turned out, and everything. Clark was a much better friend to Lex than Lex was to Clark. I mean think about it, think how many times that Clark had to save Lex from messes that he put himself in, even when all those times Lex kept telling Clark to go home, and his stubborn ass was ALWAYS there for Lex. Lex has NOBODY but to blame his damn self for how he turned out. I mean what kind of friend takes advantadge of his friend's vulnerable ex-girlfriend. But you know what, he didn't give a damn, he was going to do it regardless. Doing stuff like THAT is why Lex turned out the way he did. Frankly, I don't blame Clark at all for not telling him the truth about himself. Every episode that I saw Lex was always getting blackmailed by SOMEBODY, I mean god damn. He was getting into trouble all the time, and my god, look at the way he treated women. This guy was a bonafide playboy. He'd go through women left, and right, and half the time he couldn't even remember his names. Then he was investigating Clark for the WHOLE entire first season. He stole his blood when his fiancée Dr. Bryce was testing him, I mean you want more? How about the fact that Lex wanted Clark's life, he wanted the good parents, the friends, the loyal girlfriend, EVERYTHING!
@derekmathews18189 жыл бұрын
+NeonTime, then what about that woman he had sent after Clark? What kind of shit is that? He did that to find out about Clark's secret, and to break him, and Lana up. Stuff like that is why people kept talking Clark not to trust Lex, that he would betray you. But Clark kept saying to everybody that he trusted Lex with all his might, and putting that much trust in someone is why he was portrayed. Clark has made mistakes, but it's only because that he believes in the god in people.

What Iove about Lex in this series is how vastly intelligent he is. He KNOWS Clark is hiding something. And I feel if Clark HAD trusted him, they would have remained friends. But because Clark represents everything Lex isn't and has the things he wants the most, a loving family, friends, and a nice simple life, he grows to hate Clark more and more. Knowing Clark is lying to him, makes his constantly question why he's not good enough to earn his trust. Why does the world embrace Clark with open arms, yet he himself is doomed to a life of loneliness and isolation just because he shares the same blood as his near universally hated Father. And eventually, he just stops trying to be good. I think the episode where he kills his father was amazing. EVERYTHING Lex had done up until that point could have been forgiven. I think part of the reason why Lionel doesn't scream on his way down, is because he KNOWS his mistakes and the decisions he made with Lex, created this. He KNOWS this is what he deserves, and maybe he even saw it coming through a vision at some point hence why he tried so hard to make amends in the end. But ironically, Lionel embracing Clark just sent Lex even further off the deep end. To the point that nothing he said, or did, could change either of their fates.

Number 7 is gd but would've been better if Clark was already superman
