This is only true for the type of players who doesn't take this game seriously and just play offline with his friends also have no dea how to play it. Online players actually do care to block. But there is another flip to that coin. Lots of scrubs just hold back and throw some unsafe shit randomly which sometimes drags tham quite far especially if they're using characters bullshit moves etc.

Top mistake for beginners is to play this game. Tekken community is treating beginners horribly, it doesn't matter if that guy is new to Tekken or he's pro of Tekken, every single Tekken veteran must try hard for whatever reason. I understand if it's ranked match or tournament but ffs can you chill in normal matches and quick matches not everyone is good as you???

The reason Tekken is my favourite fighting game franchise is because there is so much to learn...but no hurry or pressure to learn it all at once. Each nugget you pick up gets you a little further along the way. Its kind of like learning music.

Yeah, it can apply to any fighting game, not Tekken. Having fancy-ass combos means nothing if you have no neutral game or fundamentals.
@SoldatCrinale
@SoldatCrinale 7 жыл бұрын
you need fundamentals. learn that and then your characters normals. jmcroft laid it out. just learn normals and see what's the optimal normals to use. if you want to take it a step further, study frame rates and see which are good and bad on block. once you get your fundamentals...use online as a way of practicing your execution. its easy to fancy combos on a still target...but now you actually have to set up a live opponent. wins ans losses and shouldn't matter right now....they will come with more time.
@norXmal
@norXmal 7 жыл бұрын
You did one of the important parts, the good thing about grinding the combos, is that you can do them on the fly, but you have to have entries, I recommend making them, finding out which abilities are the quickest and the most effective to send your opponent flying, that is when I tend to attempt my 10 combo's when they are completely defenceless. Having knowledge of every character, as in knowing a few combos and their rage art is important because this benefits your timing, timing is key in this franchise, knowing when to block and when to strike, it all adds up.

Especially, because certain people have rage arts that are pretty much unpunishable on block like hwaorang.

getting counter hit for not understanding different characters speed and reach. Took a while to realize that closing against Panda is going to give like half an arm for Panda to hit you with before you can punch back. Or like how Nina is faster than Law for a lot of moves. Or how the female characters are slightly less susceptible to high attacks and grabs.

+TekkenPT Very true and why being counter hit to hell sucks. That's why I try to learn the basic three moves as quick as possible: Quick moves, medium speed moves and heavy slow moves. quick moves are usually counter hit. medium may counter hit and may deal more damage. heavy slow moves do the most damage but can be counter hitted by most quick and some medium speed and power moves.

Another thing to note is that when you get up from the ground, your character is considered transitioning from a crouching stance. That means, for a brief period, you can't sidestep or backdash and your attacks will be affected by "while rising" stance. However you'll still be able to block. Took me a loooong while before i understood that.

A bad mistake I make is playing offline too much. I play against CPUS all the time, and when I think I'm ready to go online walked all over. I play more like a CPU than a human online, which is very sad lol. I highly recommend not just spending your time playing bots. Go online a ton, or play with friends. There's only so much an Ultra Hard CPU can do that knows your every move before you do it lol.

Legion NB Yeah it's good advice to practice online to see how other players juggle their insane half-health-bar combos with their mains since CPUs never really do that. While online may be more difficult, the frames are always subject to some error due to lag. That's why I mostly practice offline. This game is all about frames and punishment. If you don't have consistent negative and positive frames, you really have nothing but luck with this game. Online is neat, but its not the real Tekken experience. The best players in the world always play this game offline.

As someone who just got to juggernaut online, these are very valid points! Another big mistakes people make are being too repetitive when health is low. When health is low, we often see the same situations all the time, and usually the lower level players do the same stuff when either their health, their opponent's health, or both are low. You create new situations with movement and a different pattern of attacks. If you get too repetitive, you are going to eat a whiff punisher from an opponent who is paying attention to how you play at the end of each round!

Elliott Z imma be honest i start pulling out mi items and stab or shoot the fuckers when I'm panicking don't do that it's cheap not as cheap as spamming lows or orbitals the entire time tho
@XZMath
@XZMath 7 жыл бұрын
Honestly spamming lows or orbitals is not too hard to deal with. If you get beat by spam, unless there is lag, it's on you. Gotta learn how to handle orbitals. The best way to shut down people who use that move a lot is to forward dash in, and then back dash, wait for orbital and whiff punish them. This takes practice to get the spacing and timing down, but it's too hard to deal with. Blocking and low parrying lows comes from paying attention to when your opponent uses them. Also using items is not cheap, it's only a little bit annoying, but they can usually be sidestepped easily. No high ranked player, or really anyone 10th dan or better uses items. If you want to win at tekken, you gotta learn the game well, practice, and not use gimmicks or nonsense. Also I am Vanquisher now, almost about to get promoted to Destroyer ;)

Number #1 should've probably been to defend and punish, but overall a very good list! So many new players just try to outrace their opponent to the finish line with spamming buttons instead of blocking and punishing accordingly. My friend gets mad at me when I play Alisa or Eliza (the only characters that I actually know some moves for) and he ends up losing 95% of the time on his Hwoarang spamming mix ups.
@TheDocbach
@TheDocbach 7 жыл бұрын
I could easily extend this list. 8.) Starting out the match with unsafe launchers instead of pokes. 9.) Not knowing what a 1 and 2 break is, and being thrown because of it. 10.) Relying way too much on gimmicky defensive tricks like reversals. 11.) Not using crush moves to punish annoying lows. 12.) Charging at the opponent when you`re backs against the wall instead of using smart keep out moves/zoning. 13.) Not utilizing stances into mix ups. Not using the back turned down back trick to bait out opponents and make them wiff. So many things could be said here.

While I've played Tekken in some form since #2 on the PSX, I try to learn what I can regardless since there's always something to learn, or get better with. Plus I woun't lie that I'm not a very good player anyway. I have some bad habits I've been working to break out of, and I figured at the least, I could give this video a watch and see what's what. I'll admit I did learn a few things, I'll admit that two issues you've brought up, I'm still addressing. My biggest issue is how...thanks to playing against the AI, I have more of an 'Attack, attack, attack!' mentality, and I've been pushing myself to balance that out with being defensive, evasive, and also trying to be patient on one end, but not give my opponent a chance to bring a match into their favor. One point I would have added, even if it was obvious, that it can pay to not just learn all you can about a character the player would use, but also trying to learn how to deal with their opponents as well. That's my two cents for what it's worth.

When you dunno the option and ur opponent rush at you to not let you a time to react. In SF and MK the oki game is less complex as it only involves vortex (mostly MK) and cross ups. Then there is the invincible wake-ups and the wake-up baiting, which all happens after a hard knockdown. Plus you're invincible while lying on the ground. In Tekken they can literally kick you while you're down.

MeowAlien にゃあエイリアン Actually low kick when they're down isn't risky. It's basically free dmg. They can always get up straight and low block it if they suspect it though, but most people try to roll away. The risky stuff is attempting an otg and whiffing.

I have been playing Tekken since the beginning, and you're spot on with everything. I am very guilty of panicking when I am knocked down and want to get back up as soon as possible. As Tekken has progressed over the years it's very easy to hit people out of forward and backward rolls if you're trying to get up fast. At times it is best to wait it out. I also recommend practice mode for beginners but don't let the dummy just stand there, it has to fight back so you can learn to pull off your combos in every situation. Your opponent isn't going to stand there and let them hit you.

You forgot one: Going into online, getting beaten by someone who keeps using the same move all over again, and goes to the forums to complain "OP BULLSHIT CHARACTER" instead of going to practice mode and practice dealing against the move. Lol, anyway this is very helpful. Sometimes I forget this is a 3D game. Sidestepping is really helpful when you have a sliver of health left and the only options your opponent likes to do are simple but very linear d+4s and df+1s.

I don't have a problem blocking low. I expect if two lows come in i know that you want SDF+2 for juggle so I continue to stand block for that. But then you have trash players that 90% of their shit is low. I only take low spam once and always crush noobs that think they can win with that mentality. Its still annoying I have to play shit with people not willing to learn how to do any of the moves except pop ups and low spam.

I may not be incredibly experienced but I definitely get where Ryan is coming from. Most people I have played online mostly low spam and I don't play online often. Seeing people pull off the same combinations makes me ready for them. Tekken is more about learning a couple of combos and sticking with that, you have to surprise your opponent or you're never going to improve.
@ryankl1984

I'm pretty serious when it comes to fighting games. I like to try and use ever available combination and moves to make my opponent feel like they have no idea whats coming next. Trying to use moves in new and interesting ways or cancels to throw the opponent off guard. But with all that work gets stuffed by low spinny kicks. If that's all your going to do, then this match is basically pointless. That person has taken the fun out of it not only for me but for themselves. Ultimately making Tekken a shittier game. There is NO SUCH THING as a no mix-up, mix-up. This is a phrase made up to make babies feel like they are using strategy when they are not its called spam pressing buttons. A mix-up means your going high, low, mid in any order or combination except there needs to be at least one attempted variation. Thats like me throwing St.+1 20 times in a row and saying OHHH, you got rekt newb with my no mix-up mix-up, your not mixing anything up your button mashing like my four year old son. GET GUD!

2:45 it's like the exact process I use in Street Fighter, where if I can get somebody into a hit-stun state and pull of the ultra combo's command right on time, then there's no stopping it, that's because I attacked them into a state where they're vulnerable for only a split second (which can sometimes be difficult as hell for charge characters like Vega, where both of his ultras are not only difficult to enter, but you're also not given a lot of ways to force someone into a vulnerable state so you can perform it)

Great video as always. Another mistake I wanted to add that I see players - mostly SF players - do is using moves as frame traps. Like jab, jab, 1-2, 1-2, launcher hoping the opponent presses a button in between. I'm not saying it can't be done, it definitely has its uses sometimes, but most moves in tekken don't generate any frame advantage on block so it's not guaranteed like in SF.

Low parry scaling your damage is something I never would have known. Does it say that it does that somewhere in game? Are There other moves like that in the game (that scale damage up or down)?
@makaveli2704
@makaveli2704 7 жыл бұрын
No, I think it scales like a normal combo, but due to the position of your opponent after the low parry, you can‘t get a long and damaging combo with most characters. My Heihachi can get over 50 damage though. :) Edit: Oh, if you‘re new and meant something else: Low Parries scale like combo juggles, with every hit they do less percent wise. A combo means a guaranteed juggle, normal strings while both standing don‘t count. Also attacks again grounded opponents does only 80 % percent damage. In practice mode, if you hit your opponent, it tells you the damage on the left side and in brackets a percent number, e.g. 100% or 80%. Hope this helped someone. :)

Is more difficult to play if you have a long list of options, you will be lost and is easier to confuse you. So choose the best movements, with different hitbox, diferentes highs lows middles, different distance, ranges, frames...

If you're serious about learning joystick, then the only way is to purchase your own stick and practice on it until you're comfortable. I was originally a keyboard player, and forced myself to learn joystick because I wanted to challenge other people in the arcade. It took me awhile but I eventually got used to it. Given the choice between keyboard or stick, I will always choose to play with a joystick now.
