The obvious plot twists aside, one of the biggest plot twists for me was that when tidying up all the rooms in Grimmauld Place in Order of the Phoenix, they found Slytherin's locket with Voldemort's horcrux without knowing what it really was: "a heavy locket that none of them could open" (p. 108). I always thought the Sirius Black plot twist was the best of the series. Snape's loyalty was debated, with a lot of people going each way on which side he was on, but I always kind of guessed that Lily was the reason Snape and James hated each other. But I admit, the Moody/Barty Crouch Jr. is a really good twist too.

Snape felt that James took Lily away from him, then Snape called Lily the Wizarding World equivalent to a racial slur which angered both her and James. I bet Snape and James each wished that they faced each other during the first Wizarding War.

Barry Crouch was such a masterful twist because the whole time I was thinking it's either Karkaroff (obvious red herring), Bagman (being all shifty) or Snape (because I, like Harry, never trusted him, plus once we saw the dads of Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle, it was like aha they are death eaters). And then, Moody is Crouch Jnr? What???
@tasmiatahia_write_dream_change
@tasmiatahia_write_dream_change Жыл бұрын
The beauty of the book was that the ambiguity around Barty's guilt and given Crouch Snr's reputation, I had genuine doubts about Barty being guilty but then the reveal was such a gut punch. This was totally lost in the movie when David Tennant pulled faces and basically confirmed Barty's guilt by flicking his tongue about.

Like you, I spent each book completely forgotting how twisty the previous book was. But nothing, nothing could beat "it's not Snape, it's Quirrel" twist of the first book. I remember 11 year old me 'sneak-peeking' to the next page and reading the words Quirrel and it was the best twist I had ever read (up until that point in my life). The Harry Potter books were genre bending in the sense that they were essentially mystery-thriller stories set in a fantasy world (that becomes fantasy dystopia in the latter part of the story).

The thing about BCJ to me is the fact that NO ONE brings up the fact that he did the most demented thing in the books. Remember back to when Harry finds the pensive (don’t think I am spelling that right) and goes into the memory. He learns that BCJ goes to Azkaban for torturing Frank and Alice Longbottom to the point of making them go insane. Ok now go a couple of chapters back and realize that “Moody” uses the same curse in front of their child to torment him.

Alternatively, and more cynically, he could be ensuring that his students can never claim falsely to have been imperiused, since he would know they were capable of overcoming the curse.

It also arguably makes the least sense, even aside from the whole Marauders Map thing - if Scabbers had been in the Weasley family for so long, why didn't anyone notice how abnormally old he was getting? Percy is 4 yrs older than Ron and rats typically only live 2-4 years, so when Ron was starting Hogwarts they should have been expecting him to die at any time - hardly appropriate to be sending him with Ron as his companion. By PoA, Scabbers would have been at least 6 yrs old which is nearly impossible, the oldest ever on record was 7. And the movie's even worse, saying he'd been with the Weasley's for 12 years - when i heard that the first time, it nearly ruined that whole climactic scene for me cuz i was so distracted thinking about it.

As a teacher myself, the subtext I took from half blood prince is summarized in a phrase I keep framed on my desk: “people do not learn from people they do not like”. (A gift from a mentor teacher) The Snape/Harry relationship is not a positive student teacher relationship. But when the identity and interaction of the teacher is removed, it is shown that Snape could be a good teacher. But even the best teachers are ineffective when they do not create a positive learning environment for their students.

@matityaloran9157 Come on be real. Dumbledore knew almost every single thing Harry was doing each year at least in the first like 3 books. He literally set up traps/puzzles specifically for Harry and his friends lol. Not to mention letting a Medusa like SNAKE roam the halls killing students, and he knew Harry was going to end up fighting it that's why Dumbledore's freakin pet Phoenix came with the sword and hat to help him. Onto of that literally hiring THE worst defense against the dark arts teachers every single year (except Lupin, but he was still just as dangerous due to Anamagis). Like, I honestly coukd just keep going with examples on how Dumbledore deliberately threw Harry and Co. Into danger each yeah cause there's just so many examples.
@Rykiz_Vidz

@matityaloran9157 The only explanation I will ever accept is why Dumbledore did that to Harry and his friends, was to prepare and test them because he had Harry's whole life planned out up to the fight against he who shall not be named.

@@Rykiz_Vidz Dumbledore was outside of Hogwarts when Harry tried to retrieve the Philosopher’s Stone. Dumbledore hadn’t known the Chamber of Secrets had a Basilisk in it and Lucius Malfoy managed to drive Dumbledore out of Hogwarts. He did send Fawkes to help Harry after returning to the school because the Weasleys reached out to him to help Ginny. Dumbledore did send Harry back in time to save Sirius, Buckbeak and himself in Book 3 but I’ll not concede that for the first two books. (Though most of the dangerous things at Hogwarts in Book 3(e.g. Dementors) were because of the Ministry not Dumbledore.)

the deciding difference between snape the bad potion teacher and the half-blood-prince being the good teacher is their attitude towards harry. snape as a person uses every single opportunity to belittle, insult and torment harry which results in harry being unwilling to listen to anything snape says even when snape is telling important information. meanwhile the book is just giving the information and the advice making harry far more willing to listen

That was my thinking too. No matter how effective the notes were, if Harry had learned much earlier that Snape was the Half-Blood Prince, I don't think he would have been able to use it again without hearing Snape's voice reading it. That would have put him off it pretty quickly. He'd probably tell Hermione to burn it rather than hiding it in the RoR.

i think the mystery around the whole diary, who riddle is and that ginny opened the chamber was a massive twist. the entire time other culprits are set up so you gloss over ginny also, they mentioned that the family left items at home and the hid ginnys diary in the list so you don't pay attention to it plus the reveal that tom riddle and voldemort are the same people is crazy because you don't really think about voldemort being a person. i think it works because it turns what we think are two separate issues and reveals them to be the same.

Great list. I would add Tom Riddle being Voldemort in book 2 and Ginny opening the Chamber of Secrets. But book 4 is definitly the best plottwist. An interesting twist that never gets addressed is Pettigrew's power. Everyone is scared of Sirius for killing 13 people with one curse. What power! And they talk about how oeter was slow and weak. But Peter actually did the remarkable bit AND was faster than Sirius. He also outsmarted him in the moment so witnesses would blame sirius. You mentioned Barty Jr. As the most successful death eater, but it was really Peter. He handed voldy members of the order for a year, gave him the potters, and even managed to get another order member imprisoned when voldy failed. He set himself up to be able to rejoin if voldy came back. Took down Moody alongside barty, and resurrected voldy. But for some reason everyone thinks hes incompetent.

There are SO many hints in HBP that Snape is "The Prince." He is CONSTANTLY saying that he's learned more from The Prince than he did from Snape. In the first potions lesson ever Snape asks Harry three questions. One is about the Draught of Living Death (which is the first potion that Slughorn has the class make and Snape's modifications help Harry make the best potion and win the Liquid Luck). Another question is about the Bezoar and once again a note from Snape in the margins mentions the Bezoar and saves Ron. Also why after FIVE YEARS of Snape writing out instructions (clearly because he has better tricks than the book) but all of the sudden the potion instructions come from the textbook. Less exciting (for me) is the levicorpus spell that we see James use on Snape in OotP and then "invents" in the margins of HBP (connecting Snape to the spell). This one bugs me because James uses it on Snape after their OWL (so fifth year) but Snape seems to have "invented" and did some troubleshooting for the spell in a year six textbook).

Personal theory of mine is that part of the power of the elder wand transferred itself to Harry's repaired wand, and that's what allowed it to actually be repaired at all. The elder wand itself was then weakened in power, becoming less dangerous. So Harry the Auror a few years down the line would be a powerful wizard who was the master of an unusually powerful wand. I was also REALLY hoping that the series would continue following Harry Potter as he and his friends solved magical murder mysteries for the ministry of magic as adults.

Moody/Crouch using unforgivable curses on students is another black mark against Dumbledore. Even if Dumbledore didn't realize this was an imposter, no way with how the students gossipped that he didn't know this guy was subjecting students to unforgivables. Meaning, he allowed children to be imperiused and allowed Neville to be psychologically tortured with a visual demonstration of what was done to his parents.

You can make the case that, however messed up the demonstrations were, they were still important. Dumbledore moved up the lessons from the normal year 6 to year 4, because with Pettigrew on the loose, there was a genuine threat of Voldemort returning _soon_ (which he does). So showing the kids, particularly Harry, what they're up against is a tragic necessity for them to be prepared to, y'know....Defend themselves Against the Dark Arts. Particularly practicing breaking the Imperius curse. Each one student who can do that might potentially save several lives each. Doesn't mean it was a perfectly wholesome decision, by any means. But when the bad guys are bringing horrors down upon your head no matter what, it's better to teach people self-defense than to just leave them to the (were-)wolves. Just another instance of Dumbledore making a rough decision for the greater good. Guess he never really got over that habit.
@katholmes7112
@katholmes7112 Жыл бұрын
@riluna if you were a parent of a child would you care what his reasoning was or would you demand the loss of his job at the very least? I'd be demanding his head on a platter. But Dumbledore has no problems using kids. Most people don't realize that Fleur's hostage for the second task, her baby sister Gabrielle was actually close to being a baby. She was only eight years old and he stuck her underwater in freezing temps. My mom would've skewered him for that.

The Moody plot twist is one that always fascinated me. But more on the side of Harry became friends with the fake Moody because of his "help", so how is there not any awkwardness when he is with the real Moody? Especially in the battle of the 7 Potters. Just always thought that was weird how out of all the people there, he was the one who knew Harry the least amount of time and had the same amount of pride as everyone else who knew Harry for many years at that point.

Yes, my favorite Death Eater! He did some of Voldemort's most important work but didn't get any compensation throughout the rest of the series. People like to talk about how Bellatrix was Voldemort's most loyal, totally disregarding Barty. He literally says himself that Voldemort was almost a father figure to him. Actually, that would be a fun plot point in this What-If scenario: Bellatrix and Barty continuously one-upping eachother for Voldemort's favor.

I can’t say the same about any of the other twists in the series…but I totally saw the Snape being in love with Lily twist coming after the Snape’s Worst Memory chapter. The fact that it was his “worst” memory made no sense otherwise because presumably he and the Marauders had many similar encounters. It was her inclusion that clearly made it different. Also, it made the fact that he hated the very site of Harry (who looked liked James) make more sense. He didn’t like Lupin but treated him with much less disgust. When it came to Sirius, they both still had a lot of animosity towards each other. But why harbor so much hate for someone that already suffered an untimely death? Well, you would if that someone married the girl you were in love with. He also semi-blames James for him losing Lily’s friendship. Although, deep down he knows his own actions were to blame for that and for her death. Which is why he devotes the remainder of his life to protecting her son and taking down Voldemort.

Nonono, don't start asking, if Snape cared more about Harry than Dumbledore. Please reconsider your use of AI software in making your thumbnails. Your channel has a decent integrity about it and I know you guys are sensitive to divisive issues mucking up your good vibes. If you do decide to continue to use AI for the channel, maybe you could put out a short (or not so short) video about the topic and explain your decision? And if you're not up to date on the issue, use this as an opportunity to look into it because it's a potential cause for fans to unsub. There's at least one person in the comments here that's claiming to do just that. Also, since most of your subs are younger people, letting them hear about the issue through your unique style would be a really positive way to spread awareness about it.
