I will be posting this everywhere I see a hot water circulating system posted as you need to be informed. I have over 40 years in the HVAC trade and have seen many systems. There are two types of systems. Two pipe and Three pipe systems. In a two pipe system, the circulating pump pumps the hot water through the system using the cold water line as its return back to the water heater. The three pipe system uses a dedicated return line back to the water heater. In any case, the hot water line and the dedicated return line needs to be insulated to avoid becoming a radiator to the house and defeating the idea. The two pipe system is not that good as a savings as the cold water line will be hot and you will need to run the cold water to cool it down should you like some cold water or to mix with the hot to temper it. With the new of PEX tubing system, it would not be that hard to add the third pipe. With that said, on the two pipe system, there is or should be an automatic flow stopping valve at the end of the run. This will stop flow when hot water is present to keep it from going back the cold water line. Just some things to think about.

I have had a Watts pump on the top of my water heater for almost 4 years. In addition to the pump, it uses a thermostatic valve under the farthest sink to maintain the temperature at about 90°. It works very well. Its only downside is that if cold water is desired, it’s necessary to run the cold faucet for a few seconds to run out the warm water that has gone past that thermostatic valve-about 8 seconds typically. Every time I wash my hands, I’m really glad I installed the system. Before I installed it, it took approximately 1 minute 45 seconds of running water from the hot side before hot water appeared.

Very important that you all know the principle behind the hot water re-circulating system. There are basically two. One that recirculates back into your cold water (potable) side, and the other recirculates back into the water heater without ever contaminating your potable (drinking) water. The easiest and cheapest way is to recirculate it back into the cold water side because basically other than hooking up the pump on the furtherest side as under the kitchen sink and hook up valves to circulate hot water into the cold side and due to the close loop system, it will get the water back into the water heater. Minimal conversion and equipment cost is involved. However, unless you keep your water heater spiffy clean and that you adhere to flushing it several times a year as well as changing the anode rod frequently, you will be drinking all the sediments, calcium deposits, rotten-egg smell (if any) because the water tank contents will get into your potable water system. Imaging home owner who rarely flush the water heater and consume that water. The other system is to install a dedicated return line into the water heater drainage system directly. This way the cold and hot waters plumbing is isolated and the hot water never gets into your potable water. This is the correct way of installing such a system. However, it is costly because additional plumbing must be installed from the far side to loop back into the water heater. Both system works but there are pros and cons of both.

The return hot water is kept away from the cold water supply by using check valve Or what do you mean exactly if you have explanation vedio can you add the link here please

That check valve is to maintain the set temperature, NOT to prevent water getting into the portable cold water side.@@a.m347

@@a.m347 basically there are the setups that use its own dedicated return line (3 line system 1 cold line 1 hot line and 1 return line back to the water heater) then you have the 2 line system (1 hot line 1 cold line) with the 3 line system the hot water never enters the cold line, but with the 2 line system they use the cold line as a return to the water heater and with those systems they put a temperature activated valve that opens up and dumps from the hot line into the cold line to keep the water in the hot line hot. Since it is a lot cheaper to use the existing piping instead of adding a new line from the opposite side of the house most will go this route. The down side is that the cold side is contaminated when the valve is open dumping water from the hot side into the cold side.
