Due to hydration in low/high temps. I'd keep it on the same, higher level. I don't have much exp in MTB but did a fair share of survival/bushcraft and during cold weather I was dehydrating even quicker than during summer. It's that confusing feeling of cold outside makes us don't want to drink that much, but we need to keep in mind that with every breath were loosing water. Rule of thumb drink before you get thirsty. If you feel the thirst, you already started to dehydrate. Sorry for bad English, I hope I made sense.

You lose around 500ml water per day, just by breathing.

Electrolyte replacement is equally important. I ride Sonoran deserts when it does get 110F outside in the summer. You can drink all the water you want, but once depleted of electrolytes, no amount of water during the ride will keep away the cramps and headaches.

True but sometimes you need to drink half and top up your levels after an hours ride. Plus it's not true for me anyway, I only end up drinking that amount in very hot weather, at normal temperatures I only drink half that, I'm not rigged like most other people.

I think it's important to add to try to eat dextrose and maltodextrine based sweets during the ride. Since the vast majority of sweets-sadly including most of the "fitness bars" and biking specific sweets-are sucrose based. Dextrose (or simply glucose) and maltodextrine don't taste that good but the former is readily available in your bloodstream for energy production after absorption and maltodextrine also pretty quickly degrades into glucose with a bit slower release. Whereas sucrose molecules need to be split and the fructose part needs to be then transformed in the liver, which is partially responsible for feeling cranky after eating lots of common sugar and it won't be an optimal quick energy source mid-sport.

I have a protein drink, oatmeal and some fruit pre-ride. Nothing too heavy that I’ll regret later. During the ride I bring protein bars and/or trail mix. Down here in the Gulf coast of Texas, I also make sure I hydrate well before, during and after the ride, using electrolyte powders or liquid water enhancers. Post ride is protein heavy: fish, seafood or chicken with plenty of veg and some fruit.
@user-yv2cz8oj1k
@user-yv2cz8oj1k 2 жыл бұрын
I avoid the bars, powders, and enhancers, the rest though, is sound advice for anyone. Though you can also achieve protein without the meat through eggs, nut butter (like almond), green vegetables (spinach, asparagus, broccoli, brussels sprouts, green peas), nuts and seeds (almonds, cashews, chia), beans (black beans, kidney beans, lima beans, chickpeas), lentils. Which is handy if you are traveling and cooking, but don't want to have to store meat.

If anyone on your crew is diabetic, it'd be nice to get their take. I maintain good control, but some rides just seem to go more haywire glucose-wise than others. Haywire = low. Not fun.

Same here! I sometimes nail it and sometimes I just plummet! It can help reducing basal a couple of hours before a ride (using a pump that is) and having 2/3 jelly babies every 30 mins or so

@@Ry_Rides Exactly. I have a pump and the Freestyle Libre. Maybe when Dexcom finally releases the G7 that's auto-adjust my Tandem things will be easier. As it is, I carry two tubes of glucose tab to be safe. I have noticed that the hotter the weather, the faster my glucose drops. Or maybe I'm just trying harder than in days past. Ha!

It's partly your body craving more liquid, but also whole grains, dark green leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains, are often a good natural source of magnesium, which is required for the proper absorption of certain vitamins, which is obviously very important. Your body is telling you the right things to eat.

Better to have a balanced healthy diet than use gym supplements, also most gym bunnies I know have very poor core strength, I know, I've seen the results when groups of them have tried things like snowboarding.
