I actually have a Marin Four Corners. I've had it for a little over a year and have put about 3000 miles on it and love it. I've used the Tubus Logo Evo rear rack and Tubus Tara lowrider front rack with Ortlieb front and rear panniers for my commuting and shopping tasks. Highly recommended because of the specs at this price point as well as just being a tough commuting, touring bike.

Really good and informative video, thank you! The vast majority of the bikes you covered are ones I have been considering as my next bike. I'm also interested in a few more Surlys, too, such as the Bridge Club, Ogre, and Troll. And, the last few that you listed aren't ones that I even knew about, but they look to be very good models that deserve to be checked out further. Thanks again! Liked and subscribed!

Are these bikes that you have experience of riding extensively? Or just named brands you think might be decent? Every bike you mentioned is off the self garbage! The best touring cycle brand did not even get a mention. Thorn. Hand-built British bikes. It informs me of the limitations of your knowledge. Not one of the bikes that you recommended had hub gears. A derailleur geared cycle touring, lol, no thanks!!

Useful info….I’m on the fence I want a comfy bike I’m not going to tour the world but some 3/4 night trips and who knows maybe I will do longer . I understand most tourers are steel but I wonder if a alloy will be up to what I need . Struggling to find many alloy tourers so maybe I’ll have to build something. I do want flat bars or maybe butterfly bars

I put too many miles on my old touring bike than I can remember; it was a 23", 1985 (in midnight blue) Schwinn Voyageur SP - At 24lbs unloaded, it was by far the absolute Japanese built and best value for a road touring bike ever build - pound-for-pound and component-to-component better than Trek for the day. HOWEVER, the nearer, ergonomically designed 'hybrid' road-cross bikes offer far better comfort than the old-style 'straight crossbar' design, and many components today are far better too. But honestly, I'd still use my old Schwinn Voyageur SP today over anything new.

Why do touring bikes use road bike handlebars? And why do they use bar end shifters?
@fredericksullivan1341
@fredericksullivan1341 4 жыл бұрын
Road bike handlebars give you more grip positions to use because your hands get tired of being in the same position all the time. The The furthest I’ve ever gone in one day was 160 miles that was with 100 pounds of gear 16 hours . . Whoever today I don’t try to go for such long periods of time . Last year I nearly died from Rhabdomyolysis which can be caused by many things dehydration medications muscle breakdown and many other things you should look this up before any Long trips are undertaken. I believe that plug shifters are best for touring because if you were creeping up a hill you tend to grow slower having plug shifters allows you to grab the outside of the handlebars where you have the most leverage allowing you to have much more stability it becomes very difficult to balance under 5 miles an hour under 4 miles an hour it is nearly impossible another reason why I like plug shifters is that I cannot find a decent mirror other than a mirror cycle mirror that’s used on the old fashion brake levers. I have a mirror on both sides and carry extra parts because the repairs are only available by mail you will understand why it’s necessary to have two mirrors if you end up on a long tour . Changing positions on the bike seat the right mirror is handy also it is handy for riding in the left side of the lane when you have to turn left is nearly impossible to turn left from the right hand side of the lane you typically have to stop and cross the road which is much more difficult. Do not use dual earbuds while riding you should listen to the traffic tire slap and look in the mirror to be sure they are not going to hit you I learned this the hard way and was hit by a car going 60 miles an hour it was a hit-and-run and I had to get myself off the road and get my own help. Best of luck I hope you get to see this be safe

@@fredericksullivan1341 thanks for the time to write this. I can understand road handlebars for different hand positions, but to me, it still looks incredibly difficult to move hands into the drops for every shift.

@@comedyman112 Bar end sifters are simple to use and easy to repair while out on the road. Typically while I commute or tour, I'm not shifting a lot. This type of cycling is not competitive, so dropping your hand to reach the sifter is not really a big deal.

I need some help. Four Corners or Trek 520. I am confused. FC is good on the budget, while the 520 has an impressive gear ratio. The FC is advertised as a gravel bike whereas the 520 is a traditional touring rig which can be outfitted with wider tires. I am looking for a touring machine which I can take around almost anywhere and which can be comfortable over bad roads.

It is as tough or tougher than the Surly LHT, comes with great equipment including front and rear racks, Schwalbe tires and, brakes (TRP cable actuated hydraulic centerlock discs) ,a 3x10 drive train with classic trekking ratios. and a robust 4130 Chromoly steel frame with classic touring geometry making it durable and extremely comfortable. It ready to tour right off the sales floor and you will retain about $300 in YOUR pocket for all your other gear.

My wife has the Genesis Tour de Fer and it really is a great bike, especially for the money. Tubus racks, dynohub, discs, hood shifters, drops, solid rims and decent tyres and of course lots of cage-spaces and eyelets. It even has a little built-in spoke holder with 3 spare spokes which is a nice touch, but very handy on a long tour. We've failed to actually do a long tour yet (need to finish the house insulation project first!), but racked up a couple of thousand miles on short trips in its first couple of years.

Thank you for this comprehensive review of world-tourers. For me bar-end shifters are a no-go for 2 reasons - uphill and off-road are situations when you want to have both hands on the bar as to be ensure efficiency, traction and rider's safety. For those looking for lighter options, some gravel bikes come along with proper gearing and eyelets for racks and mudguards, such as the Trek Checkpoint.

It is pretty unbelievable that you never mentioned the exact number of teeth both for the crankset and the cassette which is the most important feature on a touring bike! 3x9 or 3x10 means nothing at all! Although some of them seem to have fairly good ratios, some others look really crap from this point of view. You dealt immensely about the racks which is the simplest thing on a touring bike but nothing for the gear ratios!! Absolutely unbelievable!

any bike's a good bike if it does what you want it to,who cares what it weighs if your fully loaded,and if you want to travel light,lose body weight or take less stuff,never buy a new bike until you know you love cycling and then you might have the understanding of what you need,and never let your bike become a coat hanger and don't wear roadie gear when touring

Brooks is a terrible 100 year old design saddle. Look on ebay, most people try and sell them with good reason.
