Your no.1 tip: Pockets is right on. On my sketching trips to Europe I wear a Macabi travel skirt with capacious pockets (and an inner zip security pocket). I put my 5 inch (14cm) square sketchbook in one pocket (which could hold an A5) and the other has my pencil and a couple of pens and a waterbrush. Portable Painter Micro with 16 watercolors is on a lanyard hanging around my neck. I can pull everything out very quickly and easily. The key is the Macabi skirt which I always wear traveling.

Yes, take photos! My iphone has become my best support tool for my drawing adventures. There are times when there is just no seat available right before the view i love to draw. So i enjoy looking at it and then take a photo so i could draw it when i get home or when i stop for coffee somewhere. Long before urban sketching existed, people had been drawing out in the open, in their travels and expeditions as well as just going around the neighbourhood. I don’t really care about the term. If my sketching ways fail to tick all the boxes for urban sketching, it won’t matter a bit. Me drawing is what counts.

Exactly. Sometimes you can't sketch from life and really, unless someone happens to offer you big bucks to urban sketch for them (I dunno why they would) then no one cares that much.

Great tips! I especially feel strongly about the "Less is More" tip! The weight of decisions, aka "decision fatigue", is absolutely an impediment for me if I bring too many options.

Yep, sure is. I've been doing the 3 materials drawing challenge at the moment and I'm finding I put more work/thought into my sketches because of the limitations.
