Yeah safety’s job is to tackle in open space or be a line of defense if the front 9 break down. Also to help in isolated coverage or on post routes. The most perfect, oh my God I can’t believe this was so recent, safety play was that OT game in 2021 AFC champ game. Von Bell underneath, Jesse Bates over top on Tyreek Hill, picture perfect technique interception. That play was so refined and so high level. It’s almost sad to see the defense be where it is now in comparison. How could you let it fall this badly? Man, Jesse Bates, we miss you.

I believe one big issues is scheming and play calling, they had success early on as a team and they think they can use the same plays and schemes they did at the beginning but all the teams have game planned for that stuff. I know people are saying the Bengals are playing Geno Stone because they paid him more/gave him a contract, and while that's unfortunate possibility, it's a reason I've always found incredibly ludicrous. Imagine you went to a luxurious restaurant, where they served the finest foods, but they have a no refund policy due to how delicate and expensive the ingredients are. Now imagine you paid a pretty penny to get the dish you desire, only for it to be complete garbage. Over-cooked, foul-tasting, the pungent smell alone is enough to make you vomit. Would you keep eating it simply because you paid for it? Probably not. With that I sincerely ask-- why on earth would you keep Stone out there? Truly, what has he done to shown to the coaches, the Front Office that he's worth keeping around. I'm not even close to a Xs and Os kind of guy, but it's not hard to notice him just standing out there, often not even close to the opposing receivers, nor has he tackled well. At what point do we lost anything trying out the other younger guys? I don't think they'll be elite, but they can't possibly be that much worse than stone. 😵‍💫

They have 2 options: Load up and compete now! Can they sign Budda Baker and Simmons to secondary and draft CBs and Edge Rushers... That could allow Young CBs to eat while the veteran Safeties communicate and keep everyone honest. Option 2: Use the draft positioning to build up everything through draft... If they are looking long term... Trade Hendrickson, Tag and Trade Higgins regardless. Sign Chase long term. With Burrow and Chase that should be enough to be competitive on offense. Then hyper focus on best players available in draft defense preferred. If they spend the next 2 years drafting well on Defense maybe they can build a team that can overcome late game TOs... They are 2-1 when offense scored 17 or less points. Loss to pats, but beat Browns(sp teams score) and Giants. So they are better when the Defense shows up and the offense doesn't then when the offense shows up and the defense doesn't. Defense is part of the problem, but Brady in score games is clutch. I saw him go into Pit who had the best Defense in NFL and win a Shootout 41-27... Sometimes defense is not there and offense needs to step it up. Brady had 9 Superbowls decided by 1 Score... He won 6 of those... they ones he lost the offense stalled out and defense could not make stops down the stretch. No matter what the score is if its close at the game your QB and the offense needs to come through and win games your should win and maybe a few you should not. Also, Momentum is something Brady would feed off of. So many times Defense makes a big play and momentum is on Bengals side and they offense does little or doesn't capitalize. Down 6 Steelers are kicking a fg to go up 2 scores... Bengals Block it... Bengals have a chance to take the lead and settle for FG... Losing momentum... Then Steelers get TD and Burrow fumbles 7... Just hard to see an offense with all this talent look so bad at times...Brady stats are interesting... How many times did Brady Turn it over with the game on the line, How many top WRs did he have on those game winning drives that Burrow has but cannot seem to do??? Too many late game TOs to overcome a bad defense. Brady would be harder on himself for the late game TOs and stretches without a score. Burrow needs to be better under pressure. Some of these stats were in garbage time. that last TD against the Steelers was Garbage time... Need to improve defense but ultimately Zach is bad.
