The only problem I had with this was most of the reactors glossed right over the best part (imo) of the interaction between Riggs and the jumper...when he grabs him by the jacket and yanks him close, then yells at him, starting with what is in the title of this video.

It's funny to me how many reactors didn't comprehend that Riggs was done and decided to off himself. He pulled the trigger. The only thing that stopped him was Murtaugh's hand blocking the hammer from connecting with the bullet.

He wasn't about to do it, he did it; Riggs completely pulled the trigger. Only reason he didn't blow his own head off is because he was using Murtaugh's revolver and he grabbed the hammer at the last second. That's why Murtaugh says "oww," his thumb got pinched by the hammer.

Roger puts the webbing, in between the thumb and index finger, between the frame of the revolver and the firing pin, which is attached to the front side of the hammer. This skin absorbs the strike, thus it not striking the primer in the back of the cartridge, so no fire to set off the gun powder, no pressure buildup, no bullet pushed out of the case, out of the cylinder, and down the barrel. The end result is directly saving Riggs’s life. This would be VERY painful and might go right through the skin, and still make contact with the primer on the other side, with some people and some firing pins and some springs in some revolvers. There would be blood either way, it’s not a joke, it’s very “iffy” on if it would work or not to stop the shot. It’s not something you want to try! A centerfire cartridge, like what would be in a service revolver, takes ~ 5-8 pounds of pressure to set off the primer (the part that’s the little circle in the back “center” of a “bullet”, or cartridge). Some military primers, mainly the rifle primer variants, can take up to ~ 14-16 pounds of pressure to set off. This is done for safety purposes so the ammunition can be treated rougher, longer, before going off. Some civilian firearms DO strike hard enough to set off military primers. My FNH FNX .45 tactical (it’s a .45 ACP “automatic colt pistol” caliber pistol aka hand gun) will set off small military rifle primers all day everyday. So it’s hitting with at least ~ 15 pounds of pressure. But, it was designed for military use originally, but FNH didn’t win the contract. So maybe it’s just still working off of the original numbers they designed into it.

Some of those reacting don't even understand how bad things are for Riggs and his state of mind in the movie. He is highly suic*dal, as becomes clear in this highly dramatic scene. Otherwise there wouldn't be partial inappropriate laughter when Riggs almost shoots himself. Fantastic scene from the movie, superbly acted.

This is lethal weapon one. His wife died recently (before the movie) and he is riding the ragged edge. The only thing keeping him alive at this time in the movie was doing the job. If this had been real people and they pulled him off duty for psych eval, he would have been dead by the end of the week. They just don't make characters like this anymore. A big emotional arc in modern movies would be someone agonizing over whether they were gay or not. Just stop watching the movie right there. Of course, they are gay, they ALWAYS are. Yep, this IS the silly season. More people kill themselves between a week before Thanksgiving and the week after new years (about 2 months) then the entire rest of the year combined.

Probably would've broken their wrists had they attempted to do it while attached. Sometimes we need to force ourselves to make-believe a bit and cater to the realities of physics. Nowadays, CGI makes the entire scene a different affair - no actual jumping necessary. 40 years of progress!

Notice how you don't have any thumbs ups? It's because you're laughing at Riggs' attempted suicide. That was no bluff. You simply do not understand how guns work. Murtaugh stuck his finger in the gun just in time to stop the hammer from hitting the firing pin, which would've fired the bullet that would've killed Riggs. Hear that big "OWW!"? That was the Murtaugh's finger getting pinched HARD. Try watching again. Without laughing.
