So grateful for my French ancestry, we grew up with no snacks or soda or sweet drinks, portion control was normal because we were not rich 😄 We always had gardens and my grandmothers baked bread, canned and pickled foods and made a nice dessert for after the big, family Sunday lunch. Other French families in the neighborhood were big water drinkers but I had to make myself drink more water as I got older. It’s so interesting what we learn from previous generations. I even raised chickens for the eggs for many years because my grandmothers did..

Same! We ate all our vegetables from my aunts garden. No soda. Prune tarts made from prunes from the trees. Eggs from the chickens. We also ate cheese and bread and meat but portions are smaller. The only thing is we never started dinner until 10pm and didn’t finish until midnight 😂

Your French eating habits are very sensible and match how I've finally been successful in maintaining my now-healthy weight. I have a long history of losing and gaining weight - but maintaining a particular weight - not so much til this past year. For me, the absolute most important approach is the "no snacking" rule - not even healthy snacks. The weight loss program that I followed to get me here presented some compelling research about how constant eating impacts blood sugar negatively and I've never looked back!

This is very helpful, thank you 🙏🏽. I work in midtown NYC, and regularly bring from home my breakfast and lunch to work. I start @ 7a, bring my bread and maybe butter and jam or brie. Not much, just something to… break my fast 😂 For lunch, I eat while I work at my desk @ 11:30a. Because I my lunch break is at 12:30 to 1:30 and I need a full hour before i got on my 1hr walk; And that’s walking as far as I can for 30mins and then 30mins back. With my morning and afternoon commute, all that walking is 11,000+ steps! I’ve also eliminated snacking. With my lunch I bring a fruit a d small pack of dark chocolate covered almonds/small bag of nuts and dried fruit. nothing greasy or salty. So I tried in some way to adopt French habits. I just need to get out more on the weekends 🤣 Which I will start soon.

I am Romanian and we also didn't grow up with snacks and always had home made food. We live in Canada for 20 years now but I didn't change my habits and raised my kids the same way. Sadly, most people change their healthy habits when they come here and then they wonder why they packed on 50 lbs and blame the food. We have 2 farmer's market in our region but they are open once or twice a week, and anyway I don't have time to go there more than that. I go on Saturday mornings, especially in the summer and fall. I cook almost daily, I also ferment veggies in the fall and I eat seasonal and local. I am proud to see that my kids, who are adults now and live far away are eating healthy, cooked food. We are all slim and also exercise (almost) daily.

Great no nonsense tips. Here in the US it is not easy to follow. I get up at 5 am to exercise and write. Teach high school from 7-4. Lunch is 35 minutes. ( I eat leafy greens with olive oil.) My commute time is almost 2 hours a day. I spend a lot on groceries and go to too many different markets to get 'real' cheese, coffee, olive oil, and bread without additives. US food is loaded with all kinds of unpronounceable ingredients and growth hormones. I have noticed that when we travel abroad, I eat more but lose weight. We have a very different pace here and it is NOT healthy.

Everything you said is so true! I've spent a lot of time in France, and the difference in my lifestyle there, and back here in the US, gives me the perspective to understand what I'm doing wrong in the US. In France, I walk for errands, to meet friends, shop, etc. I take the metro in Paris only when I'm crossing several arrondissements to meet up with friends. At home, I have to drive a car to do all of these things. Because of the daily markets in France, I can pick up fresh ingredients, or dine on fresh ingredients, as part of being out and about. In Paris, I can walk solo at night and feel safe, so I'm not sitting around on the computer or watching TV. At home, after dark, I can't walk here, so I'm stuck indoors. I have to exercise. I get stressed more here because I can't get out and about as much. I never worry about what I eat in France. I allow an indulgence of a special pastry once in awhile there, and I don't fill up on croissants! A dessert in France for me, is usually a "café gourmand" consisting of an espresso and tiny samplings of a restaurant's desserts. I know, without a doubt, it would be easier to stay healthy and happy in France. The only reason I"ve not moved there is because of my family ties here in the US. BTW -- I compared what I spent on food (dining, drinks, groceries) over my 3 weeks in Paris to 3 weeks here at home. My expenses were only $200 more in Paris, but I drank wine there, and I entertained friends in my apartment. I don't drink wine at home.

Love the rabbits as examples. Since I have started losing my weight, it was the eating slow and cutting out everything that is heavy in sugars. Just cutting how the sugars jumped started the weight loss. And you are so right about getting enough water.

Oh my goodness! Is that your giant bunny? I love those bunnies. My maternal grandma is part french. She passed when I was 8. But I remember her saying french women eat anything they want for dessert but only eat three bites. And savor each bite. Is that true? I have followed that rule my whole life for all starchy food. I have hypoglycemia so really can’t eat sugary deserts. I might take one bite of Rebel’s desert. I appreciate this video. Our farmer’s market is only on Thursday. I love a fresh salad like you showed. The woman with white hair in a ponytail is very beautiful. I have subscribed to your other channels. Thank you again. 🤗❤️

With or without access to local markets (none near me except an expensive farmer's market once a month), I've never been able to understand why people would WANT to buy so much processed food anyway. I'm gradually getting there. My husband's new hobby of growing vegetables in any little space requires me to come up with ways to cook his bounty. And the better quality of food we eat, the lesser my snack cravings. Your pillars of French style apply here too. Less is more/quality over quantity etc. Exercise helps too. You have helped me so much Marie Anne.

Slowly, but surely, hubby has whittled down about 30lbs with many of your suggestions. With a family history of diabetes, he has to be very careful. Here's a funny, but true story -- since his weight loss he needs to wear a belt and snazzy suspenders to keep his pants up. The other day, he went to take out the garbage, but his belt and suspenders were upstairs. So, he decided to go without -- only to have his pants repeatedly fall down TO THE FLOOR. What a thrill the neighbors must have had. He joked I'LL HAVE TO GAIN THE WEIGHT BACK THEN -- to which i answered DON'T YOU DARE. :)

I just came back from Spain, our meals lasted three hour or more, eating slowly, sharing our food, talking, laughing…truly enjoying the food and company. My Italian family did the same…lots of good food, lots of time sitting at the table. Now…when my mom cleaned the kitchen the kitchen was closed…period…no food available until dinner or until the next morning. And yes…lots of wine but also lots and lots of water! Lots of hugs and kisses my friend…lovely channel! ❤

yes, this is a very healthy way of eating, and attitude towards food and its social aspect. by the way, what is the snacking culture, more broadly, in Italy? I have heard conflicting things; is there a "no-snacking" rule in Italian culture, or is that just your family? I am asking, because Italians are famous for foods considered "snacks" or "merendine", like biscotti, grissini, taralli, arancini, etc. Are these commonly eaten at mealtimes, or snacks, or not common at all?

I agree with the French way of eating, you look so good Marie-Anne! A mix of Covid and menopause made me gain 7kg, on my petite frame it’s huge (I weighed 52kg). I had to reduce my portions a little even if I’m still active to maintain my new weight 🤷‍♀️. I’m not willing to go on a severe diet to lose weight, but I want to stay within the “poids santé “. Home cooked meals with fresh ingredients or a nice dinner out are such a pleasure!

Hiii Marie ann ... I'm indian ... but I follow french eating habits ..I used to have wt issues ... gaining and loosing wt .. I tried lot of diets but I would put back again and when I did not eat I would suffer from anemia and malnutrition... As I was a med student and I learned about medditerranean diet in my 3rd year and french paradox , it got me interested and I started living this lifestyle .. eat 3 times a day , no snacking , walking when ever possible , cutting out junk food and sodas , and cooking myself ..I love cooking and love long lunches and eat a stir fry vegetables and lentils ( sabzi and dal ) and fill up the corners with yogurt and lots of fruit .. and I m soo full that I don't even want to snack 😃😃 , I lean into seasons especially the fruit I eat as much as possible and jam the rest... this lifestyle helped me soo much ... I maintain healthy wt and never suffered from malnutrition or dehydration or other issues again ...

I am only partly and distantly French, but these habits resonate with mine. Where i live in the Rocky Mountains of Canada, the farmer's market is only open 5 months of the year (probably because vegetables would freeze in minus 15-30 Celsius :) But I went every week this spring/summer, and I've developed relationships with local producers to get their food through other channels during winter. Eating local, fresh, and with great pleasure cannot be underestimated. In my experience, it is life-changing, the source of great well-being.

I miss being able to go to the markets each day to purchase and prepare a nutritious meal. Here in America there are supermarkets, usually some distance away and you have to drive the car to get there. It's not always conducive to get there every day. "I’m in my 70s now and still weigh the same as when I was at uni" you're 70. that means your generation grew up with organic, non-gmo foods. the reason this younger generation struggles with weight along with myriad of health issues is because modern food is not as nutritious as it once was. in north america our chicken are humongous. and if you do the math you'll understand that whatever they're pumping into chickens to get them big, people are consuming it - that's why they, too, become big. it's unfair to compare the boomer generation to the current one, just like Marie, who's of an older generation - the generation that wasn't introduced to sweets and fizzy drink or the generation that made pizzas and hamburgers/mcdonalds common. it's hard to unlearn a habit. easier to stay as someone who's always didn't eat candy than to revert that habit of snacking from childhood age.

I was waiting for this video for a long time and as usual I loved it. I must confess that I am a little bit addicted to your channel. I have never suffered from excess weight. I have small portions, consume fruits in the morning and vegetables for lunch and supper. I adore ice cream and wine but I have always a small portion of ice cream with my lunch and supper and a glass of wine with supper as well. I drink water as much as I need and stay away from fried things and fast food. Walking is something I really like but during the rainy season that’s almost imposible. So I follow a KZbin channel with 20 minutes walk at home routines that are just perfect. Gym is not for me but I like to exercise at home with simple routines that help me keep in shape. The American lifestyle is slowly killing us and we must do something to stop it right now!

We have farmer's markets nearby, but only one day a week and only between May and September. However, my community has a garden. Any resident can rent a plot or 2 for $20 each a year. My two plots measure 72 square feet and I can grow lots of greens, tomatoes, squash, and various alliums. And we run a self-serve mini-market where we sell our surplus to other residents toraise money for the Food Bank. Some gardeners keep their chard and kale going all winter. All our grocery stores also sell good organic produce so it isn't hard to find locally.

I live in a small town ,1500, but tourism makes our population triple in summer. We have a Farmer's market with Mung farmer families coming in 100 miles away with produce once a week. Later we have a truck farm that brings up produce and ends with squash and pumpkins. I live alone but put in a couple of tomato plants and herbs in a table garden on my deck so the deer and rabbits don't eat it up. It is fun to watch it grow. Alot can be grown in pots and halved wine barrels in small spaces. Wintertime is more difficult.

I love the little rabbit vignette. Really gave me a chuckle. My first time to France we were in Arras and amazed to find even the government shops, the post office etc. closed 12 -2. A nice big sandwich for 2 euro and a glass of ice cold beer for another 2. It does seem like a healthy schedule for eating. N American women are now doing what they call "intermittent fasting" which is something similar, only really breaking their fast at lunch, and they swear by it for maintaining weight.

I cook our meals with portion control in mind, and make sure at least half the dinner plate is covered in green vegetables. There are no seconds - ever! I know what I serve my husband and myself will make us feel full after those 20 minutes. I do get stomach-growlingly hungry around 4pm though ... always have, even though I drink a lot of water. I resort to grabbing a small handful of almond nuts to calm the hungry beast. We eat fresh food - no processed food, no jar sauces (ie pasta sauce). I banned biscuits (cookies) from the house during the 2020 lockdown, and we have both lost weight as a result. Sugar is your enemy! I have noticed that in France, when I've visited, people will eat their sugary treats such as macarons or pastries, but they ARE treats, not an everyday occurrence. So we keep anything sweet as an occasional treat. We both feel much healthier that way.

Thank you, as always very convincing. I have the same rules and even have success with quitting snacks. But help me , please. I need your advice about wine and cheese. Because of pre diabetes I avoid anything with high carbohydrate amount, even fruits. But after lunch I allow myself 100-150 grams of wine and 50-60 grams of good cheeses .Physically active, not overweight but have sense of guilt of overindulgence of these french goodies. You look wonderful, slim, great posture, the most charming is your positive energy.Have great pleasure watching your country side videos. Stay like this for many years to come.

This almost completely matches the habits I developed while raised in France. With the exception of the shopping at the local market. But grocery stores in Frances are stocked enough on fresh, fresh produce. I've lived in the US my entire adult life and have reached middle age with the same waistline I had as when I was in my early 20's (after an initial surge as I adopted, then dropped, a number of American eating habits). These habits served me well, and I was able to adapt them to life in the US. The big American habit I dropped is soda. I also do my own baking for sweets, or else abstain. I have lost the palate for the American pastries, as they are too sweet. I bake my own bread as well, as the bread I find at the grocery store is sweet (which is weird to eat). Disclaimer here, I don't eat bread on a daily basis or else the baking of my own bread idea would not be manageable. I have a rice based diet. Rice is a lot quicker and easier to prepare. I am able to shop in American grocery stores and maintain a healthy diet. It's not that difficult. If you spend more time in the fresh produce department and other raw ingredients areas, you are good to go. I strongly believe making meals from scratch is key for the waist line and for health. I do follow the "faire attention" diet, where I make small adjustments to my eating as soon as my skirts become a little snug around the waist. But as far as self discipline goes, that's somewhat lacking. So I work with it. Even though I am a fully grown woman, I like my gouter. It takes me from lunch to dinner. I think of my gouter as a mini-meal as opposed to snacking. It's contained to once, at a regular time. If it is during a "faire attention" period, my gouter will be a cup of tea. I have trained myself to drink plain tea (no sugar, no milk). In the winter time, I drink hot tea. At night, it's herbal tea. In the summer time, I brew my own ice tea out of a variety of teas, my favorite being peach. It replaces fruit juices and sodas with a satisfying fruity flavor and a touch of sweetness. During meals, I drink water. One thing not mentioned in the video, is that the French do allow themselves wine with their meals, or beer depending on what goes with the food (in moderation). I don't drink alcohol so for me, it's just water.

nice video, just a comment on American grocery stores, we also have farmers markets, fresh vegetables delivered , and our grocery stores , filled with organic and regular vegetables, fruit, and all types of organic foods, if a person chooses them. I personally, have witnessed the grocer removing vegetables that did not sell during the day. They supply fresh vegetables every day.

I'm a high school teacher in the US and I get about 25 minutes for lunch. By the time I join my friends, sit down and heat up my food I probably have about 15. ☹️ I am pretty firm on the rules that my lunch is sacred. If a kid wants to come in to work on something during lunch I schedule them for another time. I'm going to try to make better lunches now though instead of just some microwaveable frozen thing.

Where I live in the U.S. we don't have a farmers market all day every day, but just on certain days in the morning for a few months out of the year. It's kind of depressing. I have to rely on grocery stores who might have a few organic choices of fruits and veges. I try to grow some veges myself and I like to ferment them, they last for a very long time in the fridge. I like hot Green Tea with lemon and sometimes I add a teaspoon of Grass fed organic beef gelatin to it for the extra protein and it keeps me fuller longer, in between meals and water to keep hydrated. TY Mary-Ann, great advice!

We live in a farming area but mainly potatoes, carrots, glasshouse tomatoes etc. We have a market in town twice a week. Never buy food from the market because they buy from the fruit and veg warehouses. Fair number of farm shops here too. I've found that being hyperactive and allergic to wheat (so no carbs) keeps me slimmish

@@cfairc7562 Yes, Wheat can be a problem for many and they may not even realize it. In general grain is consumed way too much in the diet and may cause health issues. My doctor admonishes me to eat grain only 2 days a week, which is hard because I love certain breads, and corn. But I can tell when I feel bogged down, weak and sickly, if I cut out all the grain for a while, I begin to feel much better, and lose weight much easier.
