Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.
I have the largest Small Engine Repair Video Library on KZbin and the entire internet with over 1200 videos, just GOOGLE "DONYBOY73"!

Was looking for a video I could use to learn how to do the repair. This is the perfectly, well explained, thorough video about the matter. I have applied 99% of the video on my Makita Dolmar engine DCS5121 chainsaw. After being quoted 1000$ in repairs from the Montreal Makita dealership, I found myself looking to repair mine by myself and absolutely not throw it in the garbage. This is a semi-professional chainsaw that I really liked and I wanted to keep it. I had lent the saw to a friend and it came back with a bad compression cylinder, bad carburetor etc. Haven’t started it yet as I wanted to also rebuild the carburetor (as stated by the repair center). Bought a total of about 250$ in parts to save the saw. Worth it in my opinion. Thank you a million Dony

As always a great video. You are easy to understand with your slow voice and great quality videos.I have a small engine repair shop here in the Napa Valley calif and admit your videos have helped me become a respectable small engine shop. I have always had a mechanical background but didn't know a lot about small engines 4 cycle and 2 cycle.I know you can always sharpen up by watching a pro like yourself.Thanks a lot for your help. I can actualy turn a buck now. I have built up a small stock of parts. I love Briggs motors and have good success with them. Not to hot for techumsah, kohler. but will take them on.I'm 73 and really love working on machines and don't have a problem making bucks doing it.I'm a retired welder.32 years welding in the bay area oil refinerys.Your choice of the Lincoln is a great choice. Don't you just love the winking welding hood.Be shure your lens is dark enough and you don't get arc flash from to light a shade. I always used a number 11 shade. and believe it I still have great eye sight.I don't think you can buy the American optics number 11 gold mirror lens today. Thanks for the very detailed instructional, Don. I just finished doing the rebuild on my 026 using your video as a guide. The hardest part was getting those circlips back into the piston head, especially when the piston is mounted, but it was doable. I also had a bit of trouble with getting the cylinder head mounted. Those 4 torx bolts got easily out of alignment as they were tightened, definitely needed to take time and tighten each a small amount. The 026 was very close to the 260, with only a few differences.

Thank you for this video. I did the rebuild and ran into a problem of my own making. After starting it the first time, the piston jammed in the jug. I had to take it all back down and look to see what I had done. I had trouble getting the jug off the piston. The piston pin had slid out of the piston and the rod. I thought that I had not seated the spring clip holder for the pin so I tried to locate the spring clip in the crank area, not there. I looked in my extra part box. I had forgotten to put the second clip on when I installed the piston. That's how I learn, the hard way. It didn't hurt anything, everything working great.

Thanks to donyboy73 and his KZbin channel, I spent about 75 minutes this afternoon rebuilding the top end of my Stihl MS261 chainsaw. His tips and instruction were flawless and straight forward. Although he rebuilt a Stihl MS260, it wasn't too far off from mine. I had to do a few things differently and it took me a little longer than it took donyboy73. I finished the rebuild, mixed my fuel a bit on the rich side with 2 cycle oil as he suggested, took it outside and primed it to get fuel back into the engine, then pulled the cord a few times...and she started strong! AWESOME!!!! BTW, the saw repair shop wanted over $200 and I did it myself for $87 including specialized tools needed to repair my chainsaw.

this was a solid informative video. As I followed along, I thought for sure that you forgot to tighten the intake, but then about a minute or two later you came back to that...LOL. I do lawn care and landscaping and have to work on my equipment from time to time which is why I originally subscribed to your channel. I prefer stihl products, and have found them to be great tools. I have often wondered what a good break in procedure would be for a new trimmer or saw, because they don't go into much detail about that. Now I have that answer too. Thanks a bunch and keep these types of videos in the mix. They may be longer, but the details you provide, and descriptive way you take it step by step is VERY good and easy to follow and worth my time to watch. Look forward to them. Quick question for another video; I have a lawn tractor that wont start. I got it to backfire when I used starting fluid, but it wont turn over, so its at least getting spark. It has fresh fuel. Its been used a lot, so might that indicate it needs valve adjustment, or is there a more serious problem? Im assuming a carb problem would not cause the backfire issue. thanks again!

@MikePate1975
@MikePate1975 2 жыл бұрын
How was your 460 rebuild? I pick up chainsaws for $10-$20 and repair them then resell. Mostly my work is carb adjustment, replace the carb (they are so cheap it's easier to replace than rebuild), new fuel lines and primer bulb, ignition module, maybe a clutch. But that's about it. No formal training or shop experience, just fixing my own things. Once it's broke what you gonna do, break it? No, so get the wrenches and tear into it..I have never ran into anything I couldn't fix. It may cost more than I wanted, but it's working right and well when I'm done. I have repaired and sold over 100 saws since hurricane Sally and not the first call because one didn't work right. And I always tell them to let me know if it acts up in the first 30 days. I stand behind everything I work on. I didn't have a saw after hurricane Sally and I swore that wouldn't happen again. So I bought a used one that needed work save got it going. When I saw how easy they are to work on I started doing it to help make ends meet since I'm on disability after coming out of a cervical fusion with a broken neck. Disability doesn't pay much. Less than 25% of my pre injury income. Anyway, I wound up with a Stihl MS260, a Stihl MS460 and a Husqvarna 141 from a couple deals where they had various saws disassembled and in boxes. I have the 260 and the Husky running like a dream. But the 460 has no compression and is going to be the saw I use on a Alaskan mill when I get I running. I also build trinket boxes and have designs to build my own boxes with hidden compartments, sliding panels, feet that twist or pull out and are drawers that hold the key and have other little things to do to get to the key hole that may not be located where you would think. I processed the wood from the cedar limbs that fell out of the tree behind my shop during Sally and have made several pair of grips for various guns that turned out awesome. The cedar has an almost purple tint and the grain has a shifting holographic effect like the old cards in the bubble gum packs. That got me wanting to be in control of finding and processing my own materials for my boxes. And with the storms we have there is always plenty you can pick up for free so the landowner doesn't have to pay someone. The reason I'm messaging is to ask you if you have any tips or ran into any issues rebuilding your 460. Since I'm going to be doing one I thought it might be a good idea to ask. And since it's going to be the motor behind such a necessary piece of equipment I want to be sure I didn't miss anything or screw it up. I'm going back with a Stihl Cylinder and piston. Do you have any advice?

Don, you ought to do a piece on mixing and matching Chinese parts. Two years ago I rebuilt a Stihl 029 with a 49mm jug. It ran fine until it lost it crankcase to cylinder because I used the wrong sealant on these two parts. I never liked the 49mm jug because it was a beast to crank and it liked to break parts - flywheel, clutch, worm gear and oiler to name a few, so I decided to put in its original 46mm jug. Actually, I bought a new one two years ago but never put it on because it cam in with a broken impulse pipe. So, several weeks ago I got a new 46mm jug off of ebay. Since I had a brand new engine with a good crank, connecting rod and piston from the engine with the broken impulse pipe. I decided to just drop it into my new cylinder. It fit fine and I sealed it up and put it into the 029. The sealant did not last 15 minutes before it was blowing gas out of the crankcase. I thought it might be the sealant but it was not. I used Permatex PERMASHIELD. At the same time I assembled and resealed the old 49mm jug because an inspection revealed it was in excellent condition.. I used assembly bolts to tighten the pan to the cylinder(6mm x30mm) and tightened them down with just a nut driver and left it on my work bench in my shop. Several days later I took the bolts out and the pan was still sealed to the cylinder. What the problem was on the new 46mm cylinder was the pan would not seat all the way down on the cylinder. My new 46mm cylinder had come with new bearings but I had used the crank and bearings from the two year old 46mm engine. Last night I started to think about what was wrong with this particular crank and bearings. I felt the bearings on the two year old crank were larger than they should be. This morning I grabbed the original Stihl cylinder and crankcase and put the new bearings in the cylinder. The crankcase went down perfectly against the cylinder. Using the two year old crank there would e a gap of about .060 one side of the pan. I could use the engine bolts to pull down the pan against the cylinder but once you fired it up the seal would break and it would start leaking two cycle everywhere on the bottom side of the engine. After I disassembled the 029 this morning I started measuring the bearings the came with my new cylinder and they came out 1.575" with my dial micrometer. The ones on the two year old crank measured 1.578 or .003 larger than the new bearings. What the Chinese are doing is mixing and matching bearings as determined by the tolerance of the parts. If a particular part was machined larger than spec - they just throw a larger bearing in it. Get the idea?

Excellent video Dony, it gave me some new techniques on chainsaw break downs. I'm doing the same rebuild in Melbourne Australia.The reason I got my 026 saw cheap is the previous owner couldn't start it then he got frustrated and gave up. When I tried starting the saw I got nothing as well, on striping the saw down the piston and rings where in excellent condition so I continued looking and found a small lateral crack on the fuel elbow running into the carburettor, I had a old carbi with the same elbow, I will install the new rings impulse line and fuel line just for the hell of it. Again great video mate,

Good "how-to"video. It's kinda reminded me of my childhood rebuilding top-ends on my 2-stroke Honda CR125 and Yamaha YZ125 back in the late 70's .... and I had to do a lot of top-ends. Nice workbench with all those tools but no torque wrench? Not sure I am comfortable tighten down the cylinder head without torquing the bolts evenly within specs. What I'd learned is the ring compression tool. It would make the job so much easier although I am not sure this gadget was available back then. Thanks for the tip!

I put a nice Nikasil cylinder in my ms 260 Pro last week. It runs fine. The cylinder was not in real bad shape but I wanted a deco valve on my 260. It was a standard 260 when I got it, but I have updated it to Pro specs. It was made in 2006, so it is a pretty new ms 260. It got a new 16 inch Stihl bar and RS chain. I rebuilt the carb, because it was a fully adjustable Stihl carb. It also has an adjustable oil pump. I picked it up off of EBay. I have also picked up a ragged out 024 and I am going to put a 44.7mm cylinder on it, too, because I have it and want a deco on the 024, also. I haven’t decided if I am going to fully update the 024 to Pro specs or not. I will put a fully adjustable carb on it, but it will be an 024 Super with the new cylinder and piston.

great video! Only suggestion for your next video, 2 small things. 1 cover the bottom end area immediately with towels before removing the clips. 1 clip into the bottom end and... ooops.... much more may need to come apart. On a motorcycle this is devastating, pretty much means a full disassembly. Grab clip with locking needle nose so it doesn't jump out at you. On reassembly after the clip is in, you did not move the clip to 180 degrees. Clip "opening" should never be near the notch. Use a screwdriver and rotate clip 180 degrees once installed :) Those are tips from my 100+ top ends for motorcycles. This was my first watching for a chainsaw. Much appreciated!

So unique to watch you . Knowledge is power , a true Mechanic. As the saying goes, you can not beat a man in his own trade! I am a firm believer. I made a living with different sizes of brushes. I can see that you love what you are doing. Unfortunately less and less young people want their hands dirty. Pushing computer buttons, and making lots of money! It will not last for long.

Thanks for the video. I love the videos where you take stuff apart and replace things. I was wondering about how the parts washer works. Does it just use water or is there some kind of cleaning chemical in the water? Does the water just go down the normal drain? I would like to see a video of you using the parts washer some more. Thanks!
