I have a question - if every fashion house guards their own style and tries to be unique, how do we get that overlooking "trend" for fashion in general? Not in a funny way, I am really interested in mechanics of who and how decides on this.
@justineleconte Жыл бұрын
It seems similar because I did the pre-work for you, browsing all these shows and finding the overarching stories that connect them. But you could also name diverging examples (for instance in colors or shapes) that I didn’t mention because I don’t think they‘re „the“ thing to remember from this season. In other words, it’s still a subjective (although curated to be as objective as possible) opinion from me 😉

There are trend forecasters that designers look to.
@mariamalguessme Жыл бұрын
There are hundreds of houses that participate in the official calendar of the fashion weeks across the 4 capitals of fashion. Each one of these houses have creative directors and hundreds of workers that help bring visions to life. Each one of these houses have imprints and each creative director comes from a different background and a different skill set. Mathematically, we end up with a legion of looks each season. I'm talking thousands of options, silhouettes, textures, color combinations and styling techniques. So how do we find the trends among hundreds of unique entries? We find the trends or the patterns through current global events, consumers and successful collections (and tributes occasionally). These three things determine the who decides trends question. How? Global conversations and events spark stories and theories, fashion as an art relies on storytelling heavily; for example: during Covid, many conversations emerged about the weird global situation and the fear that we lived, as a result "dystopian" aesthetics and anonymous face and body coverings made their way to the runway. Think of Balenciaga by Demna, the rise of black colors, big silhouettes and face coverings. Now, the global conversation is tied to the recession, people are de-influencing others on TikTok to not buy junk, others are changing jobs or coming back to offices after years of working from home and others are trying to invest more and more into quality items. All of these factors combined sparked the conversations about the "old money aesthetic", the quiet luxury and the "Sophia Richie" style. We're now seeing brands adhere to that more and more on the runways so the trend or the pattern we're seeing is neutral colors, good quality materials, minimalist but flattering cuts etc. And brands like Loro Piana, Goyard and the Row are under the radar more and more. Consumers and streetwear play a huge part on deciding the trends, for example: there's a trend on TikTok that's currently being consumed that is the "tube girl" trend. The trend is all about feeling confident and good about yourself and not caring about others" opinions, this trend is definitely going to open more conversations, and we'll definitely see it come to the runway very soon via models having more personality walks and via bold colors and aesthetics. Successful past collections also decide the trends. For example, in this season SS24 most runways featured Miuccia Prada's success with the recent Miu Miu and Prada collections, she started the balletcore trend, the flats and ballerinas trend and the mini skirt trend. I went through all the shows for the SS24 and Miuccia Prada was an inspiration to countless designers this season. Finally and rarely, fashion tributes decide the trends. Many fashion legends have left us very recently; Vivienne Westwood, Thierry Mugler, Jane Birkin... Naturally designers that were once mentored or got inspired by these legends will try to pay a tribute to these legends' legacies in their collections, they might pull archive successful looks and reintroduce them, they might bring back their style or reference their colors, silhouettes and textures. The tributes could become a trend. In the SS24 as an example Balenciaga and Miu Miu featured bags where practical daily items were coming out of the bag, I think that's a subtle Ode to the late Jane Birkin, a woman that was infamous for wearing down her Hermes Birkins and for not babysitting luxury but making it functional. I hope this was informative, I'm a huge fashion fanatic, I've been consuming and reading and listening about fashion since 2016. I love this topic and your question, I'm sorry for the long answer, and I'm sorry for me barging in, although the question was addressed to the beautiful Justine. But I couldn't stop myself Lol. Finally some runway looks that can be worn by "real" people. I love the "cache-poussiere" (duster) look. Always have. The return of the clutch is also an interesting trend. And "quiet luxury" used to be simply called "quality." It was all about the cut, the fabric, the design, the craftsmanship. Something fast fashion cannot replicate.But the best news of all is your one million subscribers milestone. Congratulations and well-deserved.

Interesting but hey, bit of a hassle to use, unless a clutch has a built in arm or wrist strap, don't you think? I have a few which I used to use for lunch breaks at the office instead of taking the giant shoulder bag I used to use for work. The couple without a wrist strap ended up going to the charity shop.

For me, a full-length heavy winter coat like most of the ones shown here is a greatcoat (that's the name and also how I feel about it). A full-length coat in a lighter material, like the cowboy coat, is a duster unless military-inspired (double-breasted, belted, epaulettes...) and then it's a trench coat. Apparently it's complicated, no wonder you couldn't find the term, lol. But they're all superb options! This season's runway was beautiful. Thanks for the analysis, Justine, and congrats on 1M!

I will always be fond of the ‘50’s silhouette. I think this era of fashion is very flattering on most women’s bodies, unlike many trends.
@Moluccan56 Жыл бұрын
People were slimmer back then, too.
@WhitneyDahlin Жыл бұрын
@@Moluccan56true and I feel like it follows the Edwardian rule too. Back then when we think of edwardians having such tiny waist. Yeah they were only slightly thinner than the average woman is today. But they had built-in padding in their skirts and blouses to make their waist look even tiner. Same thing with the fifties instead of modifying their bodies like is the popular thing to do today to fit the beauty standard. They just added padding and flounces to their dresses and outfits to give themselves that silhouette. The tiny waist was an illusion for the most part. And I don't understand why that isn't popular today. We really need to bring that back. But I really think it's because most women don't want to dress modestly or be classy. They want to show off as much skin as possible in as skin tight dresses as possible. And they can only do that if they get plastic surgery to literally change their body. It's not healthy mentally. It's not even about giving off desperation when you're showing a lot of skin. It's about how that affects you mentally because you like to wear those outfits it makes you feel like your body has to look perfect so you look good in these outfits. We modify our bodies to fit the clothes. When we should be modifying the clothes to fit our bodies. This is what feminism has done for women. For every good thing feminist did there is a huge major drawback as a consequence. And this is the consequence of normalizing showing off your body to young girls

The first word that came to mind for “cache-poussière” was “duster.” The original dusters were full-length, light-colored canvas or linen coats worn by horsemen to protect their clothing from trail dust. These dusters were typically slit up the back to hip level for ease of wear on horseback. Dusters intended for riding may have features such as a buttonable rear slit and leg straps to hold the flaps in place. For better protection against rain, dusters were made from oilcloth and later from waxed cotton.

I grew up in the rural west. The cowboy coat you're talking about is often called a 'duster' out here by actual cowboys. It is extremely functional, and is called a duster because it keeps the dust off of you during long rides. It'll also keep you warm riding in very cold weather. Dusters have a lot of military influence because they were originally made for cavalry officers stationed on the American frontier, so embellishments like epaulettes were used by cavalry and cowboys to hold things like loops of rope.

@hopenield8234 Жыл бұрын
Actually they didn’t all have small waists in the 50’s either. It’s the proportions of the clothes that made the wearers look like they had hourglass figures. Padding on the top and bottom highlighted the waist. And crinolines, net skirts and or starch held out those massive skirts. Great tailoring could achieve the look for most women in a way that the fashionable figures of the 60’s were not so widely achievable. Tailoring… the fashionable woman’s best friend :-)
@celinescrappassion2184 Жыл бұрын
@@hopenield8234 I don't deny that tailoring can help, but I have found many articles about waists in the 50s, and they were definitely smaller for many reasons. One of the article says: Since the 1950’s, women’s bodies have ballooned in size. Back in the 1950’s the woman’s average waist size was 27 inches, where as today it is 34 inches. With the average dress size for a woman being a 12, and today it is a size 16. Less Chance to Graze Not every household in the 50’s owned a fridge. This meant women during this time were not able to over stock up on unhealthy cakes and snacks that perished quickly. Meals would have been prepared from scratch, with fresh ingredients bought daily. Filling Healthier Meals Were Standard in the 50’s In the 50’s, meals were protein and vegetable rich. Carbohydrates and grains were consumed far less than today. In comparison, it is common for women today to fill up the majority of the day on carbohydrate rich foods such as sandwiches and pasta. Protein is vital not only because it helps to rebuild damage in your body and manufacture hormones, but it can also be very beneficial to those looking to lose weight as it fills you up for longer than a carbohydrate rich meal.

I love the quiet luxury trend, it is emphasizing great fabrics with fantastic tailoring. Something you will never get from the fast fashion garbage. It is classy without being stuffy.

I'm liking most of the trends for this upcoming year and the newer blazer trend is fairly easy to replicate by having a current blazer darted.

As someone that’s never followed trends, the Quiet Luxury is my fave. My mother has always called my style boring but now it’s all the rage 😂 The plaid collections made me rethink plaid, though I’m still largely anti-print in my tastes. That just proves the right cut of garment can make prints look spectacular

I’m not a fan of prints either. Stripes are the only thing I’ll do.

I love a good plaid, but I don’t think I’ll be mixing mine. I have started avoiding overly floral so it’s nice to see patterns in new ways!

I think my fashion heart stopped when you shared the Hermès Red monochromatic look! You are right, the proportions were just as stunning as the color!❤

I am here for the timeless over trendy. I love a duster coat.. .makes me think of that song 'I wanna girl with a short skirt and a looooooong jacket' :D Also, enjoying seeing the 50s influence and hoping perhaps it means we might see 40s and 30s show up in the next year or two. I love playing with mixing more feminine pieces with masculine ones rather than having an entirely gender neutral look. As for clutches, I like to see a wrist thing that can hide away somehow so there is the option to use it or not. I have an old leather envelope clutch that was my mother's in the 70s that I LOVE to use for keeping all my main purse essentials in and can easily just pop it between larger bags. An extremely useful piece

that cowboy style coat is called a duster. A duster is also a name we use now for a light, loose-fitting long coat for women. The original dusters were full-length, light-colored canvas or linen coats worn by horsemen.

I like the trend back to traditional wear. As you suggested in the video, clothes are often a reflection of what is going on in society at the time. In my view, after a really crazy last couple of years I feel the pendulum is swinging in the other direction and overall we are becoming more conservative.

I wish it was a combination of conservative wear while keeping some progressive ideas. The backlash against LGBTQ is insane and inhumane.

@@tokitobe2450nobody cares about LGBTQ. Let people live and don't put it down our throats, we don't have to agree on everything.

I LOVE a "timeless not trendy" trend! That makes me super happy. I appreciate your breakdown of the pleats because I have a few things I got at the thrift store that are gorgeous but truthfully a bit oversized. The pleats is a nice way to experiment in multiple ways rather than just tying the bottom of a shirt all the time.

Trends that are actually wearable.. _it actually happened!_ LOL, we will be able to recognize this year simply by that very fact! Thank you so much for sharing your mood boards with us, Justine. You make fashion so much more interesting, fun, and, especially, understandable. All the best with your in-the-process project! :) Shannon A.

The long duster coat is my favorite of these trends. I love a practical coat that keeps me warm AND looks chic, even if I'm just wearing jeans, boots, and a simple sweater underneath.

Thanks Justine! Always a pleasure to see your reviews of the runways! Those long coats are called "dusters" or "duster coats" in English, by the way.

I love the monochrome red Hermes outfit, for one thing, it’s seasonally appropriate and actually warm. So many designer “Autumn/Winter” looks aren’t, with exposed midriffs, legs, spaghetti strap camis, strappy 5-inch sandals, etc. i’m not crazy about the tunic top, but otherwise, it’s great. I wish designers would create clothing, not just art. Clothing should be wearable art, but above all, make women look and feel fantastic. Often it seems they only just design for each other; remember the outfit with the inflated kiddie pool around the middle last summer, what a joke.

I'm a fan of sinched waist and long coats! Loved them for years and will keep wearing. Also, I have a very nice vintage Escada skirt of green plaid color which I was wearing for the last 2-3 years, and it's now on trend, how convenient 😅 I'll wear it more now, haha
