So it seems we may have made a teeny tiny oversight and missed off a certain Red Viper and probably should have mentioned this in the video. He may or may not qualify for the criteria depending on timings, since he operated heavily outside of Westeros as a mercenary and with own company when he was younger and it could potentially fall into the era we specified, though we can't say for sure, we dont know where he was at the start of the rebellion and we know for a fact he definitely didnt operate much outside of Dorne after the rebellion because he barely left his homeland. So it is possible he got all of his soldiering across the sea out of the way before the start of Roberts Rebellion (which is where the ASOIAF era starts for us personally) Now I won't ask where he goes in the top 10 because..........don't be silly. But whose getting their spot stolen in the top 3 if he does indeed qualify? Thanks guys! Liam

Number 2 because of his spear and his poison. Drogo is a beast, but going unarmored against a spear when all you have is a close range weapon is just absurd. Oberyn definitely had the skill to match Drogo and so it comes down to equipment and Oberyn’s is just superior

To make a note about Syrio His scene in the books describes him as leaving several of the 5 Lannister guards he downs as dead or dying So yeah he was able to kill or mortally wound multiple men in decent enough armor with a stick, as opposed to the show where their fates are open ended enough

Syrio is a badass, super underrated in all honesty. He's one of those fighters where you say "well plate would stop him in his tracks thanks to his weapon choice" and then he messes up guys in plate with a training stick 🤣 I think with Syrio you need both high levels of skill and a ton of armour, and you can't have one without the other (assuming he's got a proper sword) Thanks for watching Raicattivo! Selmy's hype is so weird. You're saying that Drogo; who i think most agree is faster, stronger, taller, more agile, more stamina, and probably doesn't have arthritis would lose to old man Selmy because he has armor and might even lose if Selmy was unarmored? Is Selmy even that much more skilled then the dude who wipes out villages weekly and kills blood riders with his bare hands for fun? Did I imagine the scenes in GOT when the armored fighters of Jamie's and Cersie's army were absolutely obliterated by the unarmored Dorthraki? I acknowledge that Selmy is a cut above those soldiers, but Drogo was a cut above those Dorthraki.

@@matthewstevens2274 See that’s the thing with Barristan, he’s written almost too unrealistically. Most would also agree that Mero, the Titan’s bastard and a leader of a mercenary company would also handily beat an old man, yet Selmy killed him with a stick. He also killed a deadly Dothraki warrior in the fighting pits of Meereen. This is the same dude who tore through the ranks of the most elite mercenary company on the planet and slew Maelys the monstrous in single combat, a man who was as strong as the mountain perhaps even stronger. He also infiltrated a castle under siege and rescued their most guarded prisoner, the literal king, and escaped with him suffering only minor injuries. That is almost more fantastical than the existence of dragons. In the beginning of the book, it is also said the last tourney he beat the hound and four years prior won it outright. A 60 year old Barristan also participated in the hands tourney and gave a prime Jaimie Lannister the fight of his life. And he’s been doing it consistently for 40-50 years. At 16, he literally defeated Lord commander Ser Duncan the Tall in the joust. As Bran Stark said, Barristan is the greatest living knight.

I actually think the Westerosi saying for age is even simpler than the one you said about Barristan: We say ''Aging like a fine wine'', the Westerosi saying should just be ''Aging. Period.'' Because most don't reach a very old age, certainly not the 50-60+ that Barristan and Jorah reached. And both were lifelong active combatants, which is what makes it impressive. Absolute war and tourney veterans. Battlefield and 1v1 experience both, and still kicking. Since Bear Island never produced a shoddy warrior, I don't think it was luck that saved Jorah's old ass. In fact most of his life seems plagued by bad luck if anything. Methinks he survived in spite of the odds, not because of them. Someone that experienced and calm in plate armor is just trouble for anyone without it, and hell, it's trouble for anyone with it. Barristan is the only one on this list who's basically just a better Jorah, but beyond him nobody here has the same kind of challenge level he brings. I unironically think he places higher here because of the armor, as the last things to go with old age are strength and endurance, while speed and reaction time are among the first to go and the wearing of plate almost completely erases the need to be as refined in your quickness or reflexes. While the show did present Jorah in a better light than the books, his duel with Qotho aptly shows this. He was very calm and measured against a much younger opponent, and had he worn a helmet he would've literally beaten Khal fucking Drogo's #1 bloodrider with a braid almost as long as the man himself *unscathed.* Even without a helmet, he ended up with a tiny insignificant cut to the cheek. That is a badly underrated feat considering Qotho was always on the verge of challenging Drogo, and immediately did so as soon as Drogo grew weaker, which implies Qotho was pretty close to Drogo in terms of prowess. He knew he couldn't beat Drogo at his best, but knew he could when he grew weaker. And Jorah just smacked that guy. And he also has a similar feat to what Barristan has in the books in the Fighting Pits of Mereen, where he beat its last champion despite already being pretty roughed up from the two fights before, and from not having eaten well, and from having been beaten tf up by pirates, AND having grayscale on top of it all, though granted that's show only. Either way, Jorah's a tough cookie. Very underrated.

I don't know if it's ever mentioned or if we have the context clues to determine when he accidentally crippled the Tyrell heir, or even if we have his exact age, but that would narrow it down considerably. Maybe I'm crossing cannons, but I remember him being around Cersei and Jaime's age, because of the scene about him seeing baby Tyrion, and we know Oberyn was old enough for the tourney, but the Tyrell boy was a little too young. I feel like the pieces are there, but I don't know how the math shakes out

Yeah it would. Both fighters are extremely skilled and fast. Drogo is bigger and stronger then Syrio but Drogo’s shorter blades take away his natural reach advantage since Syrio Uses a rapier. I think Drago’s arrogance would lose the fight for him. Like when he dropped his blades when fighting challenger he thought beneath him I think he’d underestimate Syrio and maybe drop his guard and Syrio would impale him.

@@TheFandomeClips Realistically, Syrio curbs. He pricks two holes in him before Drogo gets to do anything. Those blades are 40 freaking inches. The only time I've ever seen rapiers being beaten is by longswords (similar length and weight), and it's like 2/10 cases. And it's only when wielded by someone extremely good at wielding the longsword who equally knows how to deflected a rapier specifically. Even then in most cases, they're just too damn slow because a weapon (or punch or projectile for that matter) that goes straight down the pipe is simply always the fastest. An Arakh has no chance. It can't deflect whatsoever. Drogo's best chance unironically would be to get near combat range, throw that thing at Syrio to play for time, run forward like a mad dog with his hands protecting his face, pray to RNGesus that Syrio doesn't land his rapier in any vitals, and turn it into a brawling grappling match where he'll easily beat the smaller guy hand to hand after Syrio's sword gets stuck in his gut or leg or hands somewhere. But obviously that's an extremely iffy strategy with disastrous results even if he does ''win''. It's still his best chance. He can't outduel Syrio. He can't dodge him, can't deflect him, and has no armor. Total sitting duck. People really have no idea what fighting a weapon like that is like. I'm very fast in combat sports, always have been, but even just an adept with a rapier is the bane of my existence in HEMA, just like it is anyone else's. As a longsword lover, the rapier is still the weapon I'd pick against ANYONE in unarmored combat, possibly even over a spear as rapiers have underrated slashing potential and don't become obsolete when someone closes the gap. A very mild pivot slash on a retraction from a failed thrust or some such can still absolutely gut someone. Ridiculously useful weapon against meat.

While I agree with the ranking I do have to ask the question, do we honestly think that Barristan could defeat Khal Drogo in his old age as he is when he served in Essos. Prime Barrisan I think would give Drogo a much needed haircut but I'm just not sure that 62 year old Barristan has the energy to take that on. When it wasn't Khal Drogo, I felt for sure the top spot was going to Wun-Wun. Because of obvious reasons. The big man can litterally kick most of the fighters on this list around like a football. The only thing his opponents have going for them is that he doesn't wear armour and his weapons are quite crude. And that at least gives them the option to try and keep avoiding his fists and feet while inflicting death by a thousand cuts. Even so, his skin must be thick as an elephant's. And just one blow from the giant would be enough to inflict massive internal yeeting. Not even plate armour can save you if you are crushed under foot. Some of the mentioned fighters would admittedly do very well still against such a lumbering foe. Khal Drogo would definately have had a chance to reclaim that top spot, and if Dario is as good with a throwing knife as he is in the show, he can replicate Ramsey's feat and take him out. But I feel like somebody with a self-imposed challenge like Belwas can wait all day for Wun-Wun to deliver that first cut, the mighty colossus is just going to wrap his hands around him and squeeze until the ketchup squirts out.

One character who always gets overlooked in these discussions is Pyat Pree, the master of the Warlock's guild. He is scrawny, old and not much of a fighter but he could stab you in the back while you are attacking his afterimage. Is magic cheating, of course but that still counts.

The warriors in Esso who use the curved hooked swords could use the hook side to hit the weak points in the knights of Westeros but the Knights would still have a big advantage

I've seen some techniques where people use hooked weapons to get to the parts of the knights legs where there is often only padding and mail from behind. Problem is doing it while the knight is trying to also kill you. Thanks for watching and sharing your insight pal! Liam

Something else that immediately gives Qhorin an advantage in any fight is that he (post-axe) fights with his left hand, so as Syrio talks about with Arya, who is also left-hand-dominant, that immediately throws-off an opponent because everything is the reverse of what they're expecting. Drogo must be aware of both the strengths and weaknesses of plate armor, so what’s stopping him from dancing around on a hot day until his 62yr old opponent in plate armor drops dead from heat stroke after a couple minutes? 😂 That being said, Dothraki are savage and aggressive fighters, so he’d probably go in for the kill quickly. But with that also being said, drogo is such a top class fighter that he’s danced around and played with one of his blood riders(unarmed too), so he seems like the type of warrior to play with his food in single combat.

Syrio wasn’t the best swordsman in Brovos though. He got the Job cause he saw the world for how it was, The sea lord tested his potential first swords by asking them about his cat only syrio correctly called it out for what it was a common cat.

When I see water dancer swords, I don't see rapier. Those are too long. I see... smallsword. Some of those were stiff and triangular, but they're not going to jab through actual plate armour... though maybe maille with a very strong hit. Of course, you've got side swords too, so... it's a funny range of weapons.

Imagine how thoroughly Barry the Bold would have destroyed those Sons of tbe Herpes in that alley if he had been wearing plate armor instead of leather. He had to be quick and on the move because he knew he was vulnerable. With plate armor, he'd have been free to take his time and let the Sons of the Herpes come to him. Regarding the Unsullied, I refuse to believe they're not trained to fight plate, especially given the seemingly significant volume of Westerosi sellswords that operate in Essos. They would be trained to strike at the weak points, using the reach of the spear and the speed of their thrusts. Sure, a wound to the armpit, inner thigh/groin, wrist, ankle, or neck may not be exciting and glorious, but there are arteries at all these joints. A solid stab or two, and the plate wearer is bleeding out in a couple minutes.

Ser Barristan fell where Grey Worm survived. Of course younger Selmy would have swept every single son of harpy east of Essos, but give some more credit to Gray Worm. And of course, if strong Belwas would be so fool as to allow Grey Worm to make him a first cut, Grey Worm´s spear would have make the last and lethal cut, through some mouthful dude´s heart.

That's only in the show, and doesn't happen in the books. Barristan is still alive and kicking in the books. Also someone online did the maths and counted just how many Harpy's Selmy must have killed before he even reached Greyworm and it was staggering (about 14 if my memory serves) I think Barristan dying and Greyworm living had less to do with fighting skill and more to do with age and constitution. Barristan is 62-63 years old at that point, Greyworm is estimated to be 28 at most. It's same reason why the older you get the less a surgeon wants to operate, the heart gets weaker as it gets older and can't cope with stress as well. I'm sorry but I'd have to disagree regarding Belwas. If Belwas can deal with a fully armoured mounted warrior trying to lance him, he can deal with Greyworm. Thanks for watching! Liam

I’m all in for this list. I can agree with every one of those picks, with the caveat you need proper screen time in order to be considered. Just to add in the “old Barristan/prime Robert” line….. we do always use a 2 handed Jaime in these lists for a reason. Also, word of George aside, I honestly would put a prime Barristan above Dayne but it is a ruddy close thing. As you say he needs to be old to give others a chance because he is that good, and has the experience now to overcome most of the disadvantages of his age. I might drop Drogo a couple of spots as well, but that is mostly due to his absolute recklessness being a huge risk against similarly skilled opponents. I could see his overconfidence being enough for say Syrio to get a fight winning blow in by his being cautious.

Thanks Neo! Yeah prime Barristan just seems more impressive in what he's done than Dayne to me. I even think a prime Barristan despite the weapon disadvantage is capable of bringing down a prime Robert with enough caution. He's just that badass and got protagonist abilities without being the protagonist 😂 Drogo is a super weird one. We've got one show only fight as a feat, the rest is just reputation. I do think it's telling though that Pentos would rather bribe him than risk him and his Khalisar from attacking the city and Dothraki only respect strength so we can infer that Drogo has been challenged and killed plenty of great warriors to earn his Khalisar and keep their loyalty. But as with most fighters across the sea, it's mainly statements than actual deeds, which is why Barristan just swept his way to number 1 without barely a contest 😂 Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts as always mate! Alright, gonna go through whatever I feel I need to mention as I go through the video. I'm also gonna say here that this is going to spoil a lot of the video so for anyone who's in the comments, maybe skip over mine for a bit until you watch the vid. Gonna put a few spaces to try and push the rest of this down a bit more so it's not shown as much (I hope that works anyway). I am so glad Grey Worm is at number 10 and not higher. He's a soldier, not a warrior. On a battlefield in a unit, I have no doubt he'd be a menace few can match up with him, but in a one on one, yeah. He's just not a warrior. I have no doubt he can hold his own, but top 5 he is not. That said, he is definitely top 10 material. Also, that bit about Gregor in the end? Love that. Really says something that Jorah makes it to the top 10. I'm not saying he's bad, but not someone you usually think of in the league of the top 10. In Essos though, yeah, I see it. Especially because of the plate armor. And I am so glad you mentioned the heat issue in Essos for the armor. I was genuinely expecting Daario to be higher on the list. Then again, I did forget a lot of the Essosi fighters from the books as well as the lack of Daario's feats in the books mostly because I don't care as much about Essos. Areo Hotah... yeah, I usually think of him in Dorne so didn't consider him. And thanks for reminding me of that clip from the show, really needed that (I hate that scene for anyone who thinks I'm serious). All I have to say about Mance is you just reminded me of the theories that he's Arthur Dayne. But yes, I can buy he's on the list, especially where he's at. I was wondering where Belwas was showing up. Adds up really. There's Syrio. No arguments from me, he's perfect where he is. Also, that rant is great. The fact that it took him being taken off guard, holding a wooden training sword, and fighting a fully decked out armored knight to take him out says enough. Ah, the Halfhand. Yeah, I see it where he's at here. Oh? Khal Drogo at number two? Interesting. I'll have to wait and see who number one is- wait, just watched a few more seconds of it and got to Joffrey and I think I know who number one is now. If I'm right, yeah, fine, even if it's a little bit of a cheat in some ways. Yep, there we go, Barry 63 (long story). Do I think he should be on the list? Eh, sure, he's already ripped apart a bunch of Essosi badasses at 62. He's done a bunch of shit in Essos, so fine, he gets to go on this list. As for Oberyn, I'd put him at... he's either at 1 or 2. I am very torn between where he goes, but he'd go above Drogo that's for sure (for me at least). I'm gonna place him at number 2 purely because it's already very close between him and Barristan, but I can definitely see the arguments of him being placed at number 1 (if he operated in Essos during the ASOIAF era of course). And now to see the completely calm and reasonable comment section that will definitely not be filled with fighting and all. Great video as per usual. And of course, the other videos to be milked- I mean, made about the other eras must be done, it's the law.

Only one on the list that even comes close to matching him is Barristan and at that point, it gets really tough to say who wins over the other. At the moment, I'll say Barristan, but I can definitely change my mind at some point or another.
