Norah doesn’t get enough credit. She literally had the highest-selling album by a female artist in the 2000s (Come Away with Me) on a flailing Jazz label and managed to cohesively meld jazz, pop, blues, easy listening, soft rock, and country influences into her distinct smoky sound. Her podcast Norah is Playing Along is great and a testament to her versatility. She’s also not just slow songs either. Her songs Happy Pills, Chasing Pirates, and Everybody Needs a Best Friend are good examples of different moods to her music.

Outstanding list. I can't argue with any of the choices. Thank you in particular for including Susan Tedeschi. When you say that's who you'd see tomorrow - I had the joy of seeing her (and the TTB) live this year. What a hidden (from many people) gem, and YES great guitar skills. I would have chosen her playing Do I Look Worried. What all these amazing women have in common is not just great singing ability, but deep musicianship and instrumental talent. Music is so much an organic part of who they are - not just something they do. It's a soulful experience to listen to them. GaGa sang it best - I was born this way.

Michael...I was gonna call you out and say how dare you not place Alison in first place! Then I saw Bonnie there and thought, yeah, you nailed it. I remember being about 14 years old and riding in the back of my parents Mercury Cougar. Playing in it's cassette radio was Bonnie's Luck of the Draw. Riding around in that beautiful car and hearing that beautiful lady's voice coming from the rear speakers was life changing. I remember just staring out the window and getting fully immersed in her voice. I love the entire album, getting jazzed up on some of her songs and almost breaking down with tears, especially when listening to I Can't Make You Love Me. Michael, I also noticed you getting teary eyed here in the video. I get it man...just an incredibly beautiful and heartbreaking song at the same time. Bonnie's story telling is like no other and gut wrenching at times, particularly when she says, "I close my eyes, then I won't see, the love you don't feel, when your holding me", it just tears me up every time. This is why we all love her. Thank you for doing this video, couldn't agree more with your choices.

Damn, Mike! THAT is MY list! Lady Gaga seems to be an outlier, but that woman is a musician, a writer and an artist. Highly underrated by so-called 'real' music-lovers. And then to top it off with Susan: I was almost afraid you'd skip her! Great list, great video. And as always: keep up the good work.

I think that among working musicians, Gaga gets a lot of respect for her talents and determination.

With every video, I say to myself “how can he keep posting things that I thought are only in my head”. You so click with everything musically that I listen to. Many thanks and much love from Rochester NY.

Please do a breakdown of the artist ST VINCENT. Songs "Flea", '"Down and Out Downtown", and-or "Rattlesnake". She's pretty awesome! Many influences blend in her sounds like prog, new wave, 70's funk, bowie, industrial, grunge, art pop. She even co-wrote an album with David Byrne.

Words cannot express how much I adored this video. All exceptional artists. Tori and Gaga are in my top 5 artists of all time. One of my favourite videos I’ve ever seen is you discovering Tori Amos. I’ve returned to that video more than once. As for your question…honestly, it’s too stressful for me to pick one. 😅 Once, I would have said Winter by Tori Amos with my mom, but that happened….twice. 😍 I’d love to have seen Tori perform Cooling WITH THE BRAMBLES BRIDGE (she mostly omits it 😖) back in the 90s. Wow, that would be amazing. I also would have loved to have seen Laura Nyro. My parents got to see her. She is so so underrated. I’d pick a song from Eli and the Thirteenth Confession. Lady Gaga for sure and…hmmm…maybe Dope or Remember Us This Way. Those ones just came to my head and they’re not budging. See? Too stressful to pick just one. Thank you for this beautiful video! ❤❤❤

First of all, great video, thank you. Every time I hear that Bonnie Rait song the volume is cranked and the chills follow shortly therafter. Bruce Hornsby’s piano only makes the song that much better. Sheryl Crow is my night on the town; immensely talented and I love her voice.

everybody is putting great artists forward in the comments which is wonderful. i love that you put lady gaga on here who has successfully navigated various genres and worked her butt off to be where she is. great list. another great artists who has done the same is Pink. doesn't get as much love in the states as overseas but she has done some really good stuff.

Great video dude, I will definitely be listening to your suggestions. Just curious, what's your opinion of Floor Jansen? She doesn't play an instrument while singing so she definitely didn't belong in this list. If you haven't seen her vocal chops I would recommend Phantom of the Opera or Shallow from beste zangers 2019 on KZbin.

I love your list and I love all the comments. Will open my ears to some I have not heard. The one that would make me crumble: Joni Mitchell singing Both Sides Now. I’d probably pick young, soprano Joni although the later, deeper voiced, jazzy arrangements are classic too. Just such an important song.

The Artist and song that I would like to go see is Patty Griffin's Nobody's Crying. The four Women with Angel voice to me are Alison Krauss, Nora Jones, Patty Griffin and the last one I doubt that you have ever heard of. Her name is Lee Ellen Starks. She had so many videos of her covering great song and some of her own songs. I think that she took down most of the covers but some of her originals are still there.
