As a chimney sweep who services and repairs stoves. I work on more hearthstones than any other brand followed by Vermont casting and they are by far some of the hardest ones to service. If I was to buy a stove for myself or recommend one to my customers, it would be hands-down the Pacific energy brand. They are highly efficient, easy to service, the glass never turns black and rarely have any problems out of them.

What makes them so hard to service?
@sheltonmcmillian677
@sheltonmcmillian677 3 жыл бұрын
@@beebob1279 The secondary burn system on the hearthstone is a absolute nightmare to take apart if you have to. Say for example, if you have an extremely tall chimney that's not serviceable from the top without a lift and the best way to clean it is from the bottom they're the worst stove to have in this situation. If you have a wood stove with the pipe going directly into a thimble, it's not that big a deal. I have a customer with a hearthstone insert installed in a fireplace with a 35-ft chimney and 12 12 roof pitch, it cost her $800 to have it serviced because of the stove. If it was a Pacific energy. I can pop the secondary burn out in about 10 seconds and clean it from the bottom and it would have just cost her $125.

@@sheltonmcmillian677 Gottcha. I have an Osburn that's 25 years old. It runs very well. I clean it every 1 1/2 cords as required by Osburn. I like the insert. My only issue with an insert as you would know is if the power goes out we have no heat. Thanks for the information, much appreciated.

Because pink is a feminine color, I've never supported men wearing pink, before you say the only response everyone always repeats; "are you not secure with your manhood" well if you or anyone feels that way why not go ahead and wear panties and a bra, why not a dress or spandex leggings, how about a bikini and top if your so secure in your manhood, see how stupid that saying is, has nothing to do with manhood, its the appearance of feminism period, jeezzz

Had a Hearthstone Soapstone for over 30 yrs. A little expensive but burns 3 logs at a time and keeps the stove warm even after the embers go out. Still radiates heat from the soapstone. Best ever decision we made to get this stove over a cast iron stove, which cools down quickly!

Totally agree.. 15 years old at the time I bought mine in 2000 for $500. It has been the only source of heat for us for the past 20 years. It''s butllet proof for reliability and convenience. No ash mess, no sore back trying to feed it. Top loading and ash pan is the only way to go imo. Where I am you can still get them in great shape for $500- $700. an amazing bargain. Avoid the porcelain coloured ones as they tend to chip.

Jerry, is your Vermont Castings with the catalytic burner? I tend to not like catalysts because they sometimes need to be replaced and cost too much to replace. Is your porcelain? We're most always home, and tend the stove, and we too burn nothing but wood for heat here in Michigan.

When we moved to Northern California, on the way from Los Angeles we stopped at a wood stove store in Benicia, California were we found our new wood stove. It is an Osburn Model 2200 with the Space Shuttle glass, three glass panes one long front and two 30 degree smaller side panes. This Osburn stove has held up very well for 12 years and I think the view of the fire is unmatched.

We love our Hearthstone Heritage! The longest burn time, heats our entire home, never any issues and stays gorgeous with almost no care! We just dust and don’t set random things on it! We love the side door for adding new wood or stoking the fire. We’re several years in and it is as beautiful as the day it was installed. We installed a Hearthstone Soapstone stove 20 years ago just like the one you show, same color. Very pricey but best thing we ever did for this house. They installed the pipe up the fireplace flue and the stove sits on the hearth with the firebox of the fireplace closed in with black steel sheets, so it's rear-vented. We don't use our heatpump (has been dead for 2 years anyway) at all, have an open plan cottage style cabin we live in full time in the mountains at 2000 ft elevation. Soapstone is not only efficient, but it's also beautiful.

Just my thoughts, but I don't like how the floor of the stoves you show are only an inch or so from the bottom of the door, and is something I looked at when going to purchase a new stove since we rely exclusively on wood and we were sick of fighting ash/embers falling out after a day because it fills up. The other thing is efficiency has nothing to do with burn times. Efficiency is just how much of the heat you produce burning that can potentially be turned into usable heat. Being able to control the burn is what counts. As you said, that's a whole different video, but afterburner stoves need to be burnt a LOT hotter to be "clean", and from my experience they go through wood much quicker. We went with a Blaze King and couldn't be happier, there's six inches from the bottom of the door the the bottom of the burn chamber, it heats are home very well, and will burn for 20 hours on low heat setting with a full load. It's much more controllable then an afterburner system and in my opinion one of the best.

As the owner of Cen-Tex Fireplace Solutions and in the hearth industry for over 20 years I have to say this list is apparently only the manufacturers they sell because in NO way Vermont Castings a top 5 stove. I would put any Jotul, Lopi, or Hearthstove above any VC. We used to be a Vermont Castings authorized dealer but dropped them in 2015 due to their quality going down. Now I will say since Hearth and Home Tech. Just purchased VC I would like to think they will turn the company around. We do like Monessens vent free gas logs which is also a HHT company but as of right now (12/2022) Vermont Castings is a middle of the road stove at best.

Had 4 Vermont Castings stoves for primary heat over 30 years from the original Vigilant to 3 #2550 Encores on new home installs. Tried the "new and improved" Flexburn Encore . Two new Flexburn Encores BOTH were uncontrollable; the air control in both was defective. They overfired; had to throw the burning logs outside in the snow. The two new Encores were returned ;a dealer refunding the price. VC HQ was AWOL. The VC stoves are pretty. Great for entertainment or weekend fires, not for serious 24/7 wood stove heat. Our two Jotuls operate perfectly. Or also Woodstock, PE, or BK for user reliability and safety and customer support.

@@embersliving , It is smaller than the selection you showed, but my house is 1300 square feet. The little Morso will keep the entire house t-shirt and shorts warm even when it is below freezing out. Of course the selection of stoves is all a process, evaluating the space, location, foot print, budget and features. For me the Morso was the right choice. Cheers.

Most Wood Stoves now are square because they're cheaper to Mfg. A really efficient stove is like the old "Oreley's" stove which were made from 16" Dia. Pipe. Round stoves need no firebrick (to keep from cracking) & actually get Hot enough to cook on. Mine was incredibly clean burning.

I grew up in a house that was heated with coal stoves. Welded many cast iron POS stoves because they always crack in time. Steel is the only way to go for a stove. Forget the glass doors, ash pans and the pretty trinkets along with that secondary burn crap. I was luck enough to find a 1981 Earth Stove in an old 3 story house that was used very little for $300. Being a welder, I cut the pedestal off and put on some 18" legs with a full heat shield and blower on back and a full heat shield on bottom. I also added a full 4" fresh air supply made from truck muffler pipe. I heat my whole house with the stove all winter long and never turn on the heat pump. My stove is an air tight model with intake damper and smoke damper for total burn control. My stove can kick the ass off anything you show here. BTW, those 700 cfm blowers are way too noisy. 200 is about all you need with ball bearing motor and a good ceiling fan in the room where the stove is for heat distribution. Quiet is the word.

I fail to see how this is a biased commercial because there are MANY wood stoves out there much better, more efficient, easier to maintain and designed more for the only source of heat in very inclement weather where it is weeks and months on end below below zero with unheard of wind chills. Now this separates the stoves from the wood stoves....Blaze King is the first to come to mind with many others that qualify....paired with a catalytic converter which is required in many areas is what I have used for many years.....it has never failed and after 15 years is still in excellent condition!!! Jotul and Woodstock brands are better than the ones you listed as well...but do not take my word for it I only have trusted my life to a real wood stove....

Have you actually used a Hearthstone for any length of time? The ones I've seen in people's homes tend to start looking pretty nasty after a couple years. The soapstone does not age well, easily gets unremovable stains and sometimes even cracks. It's a lot more practical to replace a cracked firebrick than a big slab of soapstone. I'm also curious about your claim about long burn times. I know soapstone retains heat longer than cast iron but I'm not so sure about extending burn times. That would seem to be a result of firebox size and air-intake system, and of course whether it is a cat stove or not. But I really don't think soapstone itself is going to extend burn times. But I could be wrong. I'm currently using an old Napoleon (living room), Nectre Baker's Oven (workshop), and a Jotul (cabin). I'm pretty happy with all of them and have an older Regency that I'm refurbishing for my next install.
@RepairGeek
@RepairGeek 3 жыл бұрын
My father has used a Hearthstone heritage for about 20 years at this point. The only soapstone stoves that I've seen crack were overfired or abused plain and simple. People who have past experience with cast iron or steel stoves tend to overfire a soapstone unit. The maximum surface temperature of the stove measured on the top center stone should be less than 500F for a normal burn. 400-500 is considered the normal "hot" burn rate for a soapstone stove. This is considered a low to medium burn on a steel or cast iron unit. What you are saying about burn times is all correct. The material the stove is made from has no bearing on burn time.They don't burn any longer than any other stove but they will hold heat longer than most other types of stoves and because of that also take longer to heat up. A BTU is a BTU but you can either have that heat delivered in one giant hot lump (steel) or spread out over several hours at a lower temperature (soapstone)
@embersliving
@embersliving 3 жыл бұрын
I would have to agree with repair geek. It's about its how you maintain it. We've had people tell us they've used their soapstone stove for years no problem.
