It's good to see Fusion talked about in such a great light. Lots of people talk about the linearity, but your line of "It tears the very fabric of a metroid game to be as terrifying as possible" is a perfect description of what makes it work SO WELL. I wouldn't fault anyone for preferring the more open Metroids, but it's nice to finally see acknowledgment of what Fusion accomplishes by making itself a bit more linear.

What's interesting is that, because of the Metroid DNA inside Samus, the SA-X attacks you like how you'd fight a regular Metroid It freezes you, then fires a missile And, once you fight it for real, the grotesque form it takes is a mixture of Samus and the infected hopper thing at the start of the game

That part of the game definitely gave me chills, and I dread ;} to do it again if the rumors are finally true and the Prime games are rereleased on Switch. Honestly I find the X themselves the most horrifying aspect of the franchise. While the SA-X is scary, subsequent playthroughs of Fusion highlight the limitations they had. I enjoyed this video! I appreciate the love given to Metroid Fusion for creating fear on a tiny screen. I feel similarly about Metroid II on the original Gameboy. As hard as it may be to imagine now, that musical sting when you stumbled across a Metroid could be truly scary. The other moment I'd nominate would be the first glimpse you get of the final boss of Metroid Prime when you enter the door. The way it hangs from a ceiling, it almost looks like an enormous face. It's genuinely unsettling because you're still trying to figure out exactly what it is that you're even looking at until you're well inside the room.

Just imagine this in Metroid prime 4 the SA-X returns somehow surviving the explosion but then you two wound up in a planet where the space stations remains are at. You fight your way regaining abilities but then you enter a room and hear samuses heart beat and you hear those footsteps your ai warns you to quickly find a hiding spot if your too late the SA-X will hunt you down. A little detail should be the slow walking and seeing the SA-X face. The further you get into the game the more abilities the SA-X will start using like X ray super missiles etc

One of the most distinct scary childhood memories I have of Metroid is of playing the Metroid Prime series when I was really young. I had to have been 8 or 9, was playing Metroid Prime 2 in the basement in the early morning alone. I got to the part with all the dead federation soldiers, and then when they reanimated it freaked me the hell out. Like, that shit was just so scary. The atmosphere, the feeling of horror, seeing it all in first person; it definitely left an impression on my 8 year old brain.
@yobin37113 жыл бұрын
Idk man, as scary as the idea of the SA-X is, I feel like it loses a lot of its fear factor when you realise how scripted it is. When Adam says "Leave NOC immediately. The SA-X is tracking you.", that *would* be really threatening if not for the knowledge that you aren't actually in any danger because it will not find you. When Adam tells you that there are 10 SA-X in the station, that should be a massive "oh fuck oh shit" moment, but it isn't because in terms of gameplay there aren't 10 SA-X, the game just says there are. All things considered I actually find the E.M.M.I. more frightening because when the game says they're hunting you, they actually are.
@Fighter_Builder3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I kinda wish Mercury Steam's initial pitch for a Fusion remake got greenlit cause I'd love to see an SA-X with smarter AI and maybe a bit more prescence throughout the game.
@amirgarcia5473 жыл бұрын
Yeah, replaying Fusion last Summer in the lead-up to Dread did knock the SA-X a few pegs after realizing it’s almost entirely scripted. Like, you only encounter it four times in the actual games: twice you can avoid it entirely, then the other is a fairly brief chase scene, and the last is its boss fight. It’s great as a concept and still genuinely creepy, but execution-wise it felt like they were held back by the limitations of the GBA. So I can kinda see why they held off on making Dread, since I definitely couldn’t see AI as advanced as the EMMI working on a DS.

A big moment for me was my first time playing Prime 2. It did its own imitation of Prime 1's opening of the derelict ship, but this time it is a base on the planet, with you finding corpses and piecing together what happened to this group of EDF, err GDF. You finally get the power up and running for their base of operations, and suddenly the corpses you've been scanning GET UP and start shambling toward you, firing at you! That scared the piss outta me, and I was like 18 or so at the time (I got to the Prime trilogy, and Metroid in general later than most)! In general Prime 2 spooked me the most, the atmosphere and corruption of the Dark World and the spot on ooky feels that Retro nailed with the Prime games unnerved me so much, that it actually took two attempts, years apart, to sit myself down and beat it. I loved the games (I struggle with wiimotion so I've still not beaten Prime 3), but something about Prime 2 really unsettled me. And I'm a big fat bearded man (like a hiker from pokemon without the initiative) who loves horror, so it really took me aback just how spooky the game felt. Every room I entered in the Dark World was met with a tentative entrance and apprehension to continue. The second playthrough, I had (mostly) gotten over it, and managed to complete it with, I think, an 85%. I really outta play it again. Primes 1 & 2 are some of the best damn games I've played.

The Parasite queen from Prime also used to freak me the hell out. That thing looked like something frkm a sci fi horror movie.

Great video as always. How about Top 5 Unintentionally Overpowered Weapons/Items? The Mush Badge from Superstar Saga comes to mind.

Nothing will compare to playing original NES on Nintendo and encountering the Metroids for the first time. Always had me on the edge of my seat. And the panic as they are sucking your life and you’re bombing like crazy to get them off.

Thats pretty lame the sponsor didn't work out. Great video as always though! I absolutely love metroid month!

Here's a scary moment. In Super Metroid, when you see the giant baby metroid for the first time.

Because Samus has been spliced with Chozo (bird people) DNA and Metroid DNA, and Birds lay eggs and metroids lay eggs, can Samus lay eggs?

I really don't think anyone wants the answer to that question.

I assume that she still reproduces like a normal human, since she just has Metroid and Chozo DNA inside of her instead of actually being one of them. Though if she were to have a child, they would most likely be a human-Chozo/Metroid-hybrid as well.
@MrPooleish3 жыл бұрын
@@amirgarcia547 she's a bit more Metroid than you think. Consuming X is a uniquely Metroid trait (they were literally made in a lab to do it). And the end escape/cutscene of Dread is... well...

Metroid was heavily inspired by the Alien franchise, so it makes sense that it would have some scary moments

@@convergeman7825 For me it was some kind of glitch with the reserve tank. When I had it on automatic Mother Brain's beam would drain all energy, the tank would refill and then the next beam would kill Samus, even tho it should just trigger the cinematic.

Saying that Prime 3 turns into Dead Space for a bit makes me want to play Prime 3 even more. Also, I found the E.M.M.I. to be scarier than the SA-X. To be fair, I wasn't able to play Fusion until after I played Dread a billion times through.
