As dumb as this may sound, the Aussie/Nigel van drag race was the moment top gear became something I loved. The first two episodes I’d watched with my dad hadn’t really done it for me, but as soon as I saw this? Man, I was as hooked.

I get this, honestly. I didn't have that same experience, but that bit is one of the funniest and just, most entertainingly surprising reveals they've ever done; playing it completely straight until that van out of hell shot off was a masterful decision. I replayed that bit so many times as a kid.

@@birdbrain4445 Rewatching the clip of the sudden rush ahead is something I still do when I need a good laugh. I know they played a lot of stuff for the laughs, but as you said playing it straight is just another level of hilarity.

How can you compare a show with prop cars like the limousines (even limo episodes - old school v clarkson using tape as trousers) vs say luxury cars in Albania having to ask a dead man to get in the boot and James driving off a cliff. Amazing

5:30 That van... that 'old van'... is as vehicles go, as much of a childhood hero of mine as any racing, muscle or supercar. One of the best moments TG ever had, imo; that reveal was incredible.

That van was actually the test vehicle they used when developing the XJ220. But to pretend that Hammond didn't know is pushing it. And experienced driver would spot all the dials on the dashboard, the feel of the gear lever, the response of the engine when you blipped the throttle, and the fact that the engine noise was coming from behind you... They all knew what that was. And behind the scenes Hammond would have been briefed by the owners regarding rev limits etc.
