My dear Jeremy Clarkson, your opinion of the Hyundai Veloster is a disaster. The design of the car is beautiful and the car has many positive aspects, apart from the high price. I would like to know if his opinion would be the same if the designer of the Veloster was a European from BMW, Volkswagen, Mecerdes or one of the designers of British cars, almost all of them horrible, with the exception of a few sports cars. Sorry for the English.

(If you don't want to read all these paragraphs, skip to the final couple of lines for the summary of the Veloster mk1) I will first address the second point because that can be dealt with quicker. Jeremy says that the best car he has ever driven is the Lexus LFA. Not European is it. The designer also isn't European. Saying this as a german, British cars are a bit of a mixed bag. The Paceman and the Countryman are shit and the Clubman looks shit. The 3 and 5 door are alright and the electric is fine as well. Most Astons look quite good. Most Bentleys and Rolls Royces look polarizing but are all quite good cars. I personally am not a fan of modern Jags, but some like them. XF, XE and XJ are all quite good cars, the F Type is either too expensive to be a Cayman rival or not good enough to be a 911 rival and I don't like crossovers so that rules the F and I pace out. I don't like how Land Rovers look, but the RR is almost certainly best in class; it is sublime to be in and a damn good offroader. New Defender is a poor replacement, in my view, for the classic defender. McLaren looks very good, but they seem to produce almost the exact same car over and over again. Lotus I may have missed some, but all in all, a mixed bag. You can probably say the same for any country, including Japan or Korea. For example, you have the Toyota GR86 and the Nissan Juke from Japan. The Hyundai I30 and the Kia Niro from Korea. (I will say that Korean cars nowadays are now really up there with the best of them, but there are still shitters. Now for the Veloster. (This opinion is my own. I made this opinion before I saw Jeremy's opinion). (This applies to the 1st gen model only as the second gen is both priced better and the standard models are more sporty) It's marketed as a sporty and more sexy compact family car when it's neither sporty nor as good for the family as other family hatchbacks of its size such as the golf or cee'd. The standard models (ones that aren't the turbo) aren't fast. You might point to an mx5 or a 124 as examples of sporty cars that aren't particularly fast but are great sports cars. However, what makes them great sports cars are that they are light and so they feel fast and can be thrown about so great fun can be had there. The Veloster isn't. It's as heavy as other family hatchbacks and so can't be thrown about like an mx5. The higher models (the turbo) also aren't as powerful as the equivalent golf gti of the time and are less powerful or as powerful, depending on where you are, as the cee'd GT of the time, a car which is also a better family car than the Veloster. Its sloping roof means that it doesn't hold as much space as other hatchbacks. The strange door arrangement means that it you want 4 people to get in the car with one going on the drivers side, it is a bit of a faff to shove the drivers seat forward. Still have no clue with they went with a 4 door arrangement. One of the sporty things they did do was a firmer suspension, which is fine, if it were sporty. It isn't so all it does make the car more uncomfortable. So it can't hold as much shopping or luggage, if you are going on holiday, as other family cars. It's also annoying to get in and out of, for a potential 4th person in the car, and it's less comfortable. Headroom is also bad thanks to the sloped and lower roof, and so if there is anyone above average height (EU or NA) in the back, you may have to chop their head off to fit them in. Even the front doesn't have great headroom. You say it's beautiful. I would say it has polarizing looks. Some love how it looks, some hate how it looks. I am personally not a fan of its looks, though I have met those that love how it looks. As Hyundai said it's a sporty family car, they added a couple of grand on even though it's neither sporty, nor is it a very good family car, at least, not as good as rival family cars. It's rivals at the time were the Astra GTC and the Scirocco, both cars which suffered from similar problems as mentioned above, though the Scirocco was based on the Golf VI, which was a very good car at the time, though as time went on, it did feel very dated as it never updated to Golf VII base. To sum it up, the Veloster was marketed as a sporty family car and was good at neither while being too expensive for what it was. At the end of the day, if you want a sporty family car, buy a hot hatch. Faster and better for the family.
