The Opel based NG900/9-3 has proven it's mettle (our 95 900s runs new w/260k), but the classic Saab 900 set the bar high...a truly iconic design (which would sell like hot cakes if reintroduced). Errors about the c900 here: Transaxles lasting 200k is optimistic - a pampered 5spd maybe...(150k more realistic), automatics barf by 99k. Handbrake operated the FRONT wheels through 1987 (pia to work on). Timing chains needing replacement every 70k is ridiculous (300k no prob if oil changed every 5k).

I've driven a 900 many times, different ones. Choke on the carburetor is a hell to use, steering wheel is as hard to turn as trying to hide morning boner in your undies, BUT it's a magnificent car because it has same specialty as any old Saad or Lada, choke of the carburetor on the maximum position, choking the motor with fuel, starting, and it will start even in siberian winter!

@VTS1337 The car you see Tiff Needell driving at the beginning of the video is a 900 but he then goes on to test drive the 93. It's an early '98 model on a UK 'R' plate. You're correct in saying this is 'old' Top Gear though. Tiff used to co-present on the show along with Jeremy Clarkson. When BBC cancelled the old show he moved to Channel 5 to present their motoring show, Fifth Gear, and Clarkson re-formed Top Gear with new presenters, Richard Hammond and James May.

Wait wait wait... Leaving the car parked in gear doesn't work... It doesn't let you remove the key unless you have it in park and you can't take it out of park unless the key is in. I own a Saab I know
@alexisantonakis88976 жыл бұрын
thirdhero sounds like you have a US model. I had a 1984 900i and you had to leave it in reverse to remove the key. In the UK we had no park option. In fact is park only on automatics? Not even sure if SAAB did automatics in the UK back in the 80s
@harrisonbrand89853 жыл бұрын

Timing chain every 70, lol, not very reliable.
@beaneriser4668 жыл бұрын
Its recommened not always needed...plus most turbocharged cars need them replaced every 70k miles.
@super_slav918 жыл бұрын
***** The only time you change a chain is when the tensioners get worn or the chain stretches, this is the only time I have heard of a change interval for a chain driven motor since timing chains usually go for around 800,000km to 1 million, this is just poor design.
@xluumu8 жыл бұрын
+Super_Slav There is no official change interval, and it lasts way more than 70 k miles. Perhaps that 70 k is some unofficial check interval?
@stuco815 жыл бұрын
@@super_slav91 Its one of the most robust 4 cylinder engines ever. There is no need to change the timing chain... at all. Unless something has gone wrong, or the oil changes have been neglected.

9-3 was a much more attractive design ...but quickly proved to be of even lower quality that the car it replaced. .
