As a child of the 80s, Sierra Alfa Alfa Bravo is burned into my psych so completely that if Saab was still around today I would buy whatever they where offering regardless of model or price, well done Saab marketing for playing the long game, shame the accountants let you down.

It’s honestly such a shame that SAAB is no more. Their cars are amazing.
@JJJ111JJJ11 ай бұрын
@@PneumatinisPlaktukas15 Not to be that guy, but SAAB is very much still around. SAAB Cars was just a subsidiary of the SAAB Group, which is mainly a military aircraft and naval tech manufacturer. So technically you can still get a SAAB if you buy a fighter jet.

@@JJJ111JJJ Also to be fair SAAB Cars was a massive failure as a company. Of all the Swedish motor concerns they performed terribly economically year on year. Sure their cars were and still are fun to drive but it's a miracle that they survived for as long as they did.

I bought my first car two years ago and guess what… I bought a Saab 9.3 from the naughties. Is it an expensive car? Yes. But. It’s a Saab. And that’s what matters. And fun fact: the garage, an official Saab dealership, thought it was so nice that a girl my age bought a Saab, so they switched the interior into leather before I even went to see the car myself. When I found out, I had to buy it. And today, she passed the annual maintenance test, so I’m good to go for another year. I love Saab.

Or thinking woman's car. 😉 Genuinely loved my 1997 Saab 9-3. I actually cried when I heard they were shutting down and that my local hole-in-the-wall dealer was closing. I regret trading in my little hatchback for a pittance but I was new to apartment living and had nowhere to keep it. Ah Dagmar, RIP. I hope you are enjoying that highway in the sky.

To fix the downhill Twostroke lubrication problem, Saab made cars with freewheels that made the cars roll freely downhill. The engine sat on idle when rolling and there was no engine break. When the Saab 96 went from twostroke to fourstroke, the freewheel followed over to the fourstroke without any functional reason. I own a Saab 96 -72 (4stroke) with freewheel, and I really like it
@worawatli8952 Жыл бұрын
It is fuel economy reason, it saved fuel to be freewheeling all the time, but yea, tricky downhill.

But, what if you cooked you brakes?
@andyw596211 ай бұрын
@@worawatli8952 wrong, how does it save fuel? If you're in gear and off the throttle in a manual the engine is using zero fuel. It was a legacy system that, as the op said, served no function attached to a 4 stroke

@lawrencelewis25925 ай бұрын
@@andyw5962It didn't have a function on a 4 stroke car. Saab had a lot of two-stroke gearboxes left over and kept putting them in the 4 strokes. The freewheeling does make it more economical on fuel, but I drive my 2 stroke 1960 93F like I stole it, so my mileage isn't so great. But so what? It's the most fun car I've ever had!

2 strokes get lubricated as long as the engine is running not only when throttle is applied

So glad I stumbled across this channel! Subscribed👍
@mattssonfelix3882 Жыл бұрын
The thing that bothers me is that they purpously exclude the fact that Saab from the beginning solved the lubrication problem by fitting all two stroke models with a so called "free wheeling device" that disengaged the gearbox from the engine thus removing engine breaking and thus lack of lubrication was no longer a problem. A shame in an otherwise beautiful documentary by top gear.

@kettujabamiesukkeliukko Жыл бұрын
The thing with 2-stroke engine going downhill is that it idles and you don't need to brake and keep throttle at the same time. It's stupid to show it like that.
@Rakso-bq1lb10 ай бұрын
With all due respect to Top Gear but I would say that the sequence with the Saab 92 and the description about the supposed lubrication problem is not entirely truthful. As the case with all Saab two-strokes, as well as V4 and early Saab 99 models, the Saab 92 was equipped with free wheels in order to prevent situations like the one when the car is driving down a hill. Then you just let go of the gas pedal and the car continues to roll without engine brake. However, if the free wheel was disengaged or malfunctioned, you had to drive similar to how it is done in the programme. So partly true, yes, but dramatised in a very exaggerated way. //from a fellow two-stroke owner ;)

@@ukaszpaluch4950 yes, my wife is a keeper. My mom even said the same thing… She’s in her 70s… She goes don’t sell it, you’ll regret it. You always do. Which is true, I can’t tell you how many cars I’ve sold that I regret. it’s a 2008 9-5 sportcombi. The ugly one. But I kind of liked it because it was so weird. The amount of space in the back of that wagon with the seats down continues to boggle my mind. It’s not a show car, but I’ve kept it cosmetically pretty nice and mechanically it doesn’t even leak oil lol. After 143,000 miles. I just blew $1400 on getting the air-conditioning fixed and it was worth every penny. The car is worth probably three grand but I don’t care. I feel like if I sold It that it would not be sold through regular channels it would be sold on the forum or something like cars and bids.com. My only complaint about the car is that the first seven years of the 9-5…. The interiors are much better. The GM crap started to take over in 2006. The interior is garbage compared to the earlier cars.
