19:00 Okay, so what happened here is they flew right through the Jet Wash (Thats the stream of super hot air from the back of the jets) which got sucked into their engines. This starved on of the engines of air, so it cuts out, the other engine is still running at full power which pushes them sideways and into a spin and they drop out of the sky like a brick. Maverick is pinned against the side, because he's in the front seat, further from the centre of mass so the centrifugal force is pushing hard into the side. Since Goose is further back, he's closer to the centre of the spin and doesn't get hit as hard, but the spin also means the canopy doesn't clear like it was supposed to and so Goose slams into it HARD. All of this was based on a REAL accident the Navy Technical advisor on this movie saw first hand.

Danger Zone was actually written for Top Gun so no royalties had to be paid. Kenny Loggins was not originally supposed to sing the song either. Originally it was going to be the band Toto who was going to sing it. But they ran into legal troubles with Toto’s team so they asked Loggins who already wrote one song for the film. “Playing With The Boys.” (The volleyball scene song). He agreed and the rest is history.

The first time I saw this movie I lost my shit when Goose died. His character was specifically written to endear him to the audience. His unusual affability; his relationship with his wife and son; his love of flying, especially with his buddy Maverick; their inside jokes; his mustache; and his attempts to influence Maverick into becoming a better man; were all designed to make the audience love him, which was designed to make the audience feel his death to their very core. AND IT WORKS! When Goose died, I felt like I lost a friend. That's some of the best script writing you'll ever see, right there. I can't say that Top Gun is one of my favorite movies, not by a long shot, but I recognize how skillfully the film was written, directed, and performed.

Val Kilmer is actually never a dick in this movie, yeah they are competitive but that is understandable and encouraged in that sort of environment, but everything he says to Maverick is actually a good criticism, he basically remind him that despite being in a competition for the first place they're all playing for the same team and that safety is paramount in that line of work. @CoffeeMatt102 жыл бұрын
Ice is the “by-the-books” pilot who doesn’t agree with Maverick’s maverick tendencies. Although there is definitely respect for Maverick’s ability - Ice’s “it’s not your flying, it’s your attitude” speech, and even Hollywood’s “gutsiest move I ever saw” comment, even though he would also get angry at Maverick for leaving his wing, the other pilots really don’t like Maverick’s selfish and almost reckless nature. So if you look at it from the “correct” standpoint, Maverick is actually the antagonist. But as he is the focal character he is considered a flawed protagonist.
@sparrowlt2 жыл бұрын

Maverick is the prodigious child too damn good pilot but who likes to do things his own way and fly by the feel of his pants.. both antagonize at first cause they are nearly oposite views.. but by the end of the movie they both come "down" to the other level.. Iceman gets to apreciate Maverick for what he does and why and Mav gets to apreciate Iceman methos and acepts some more of his philosophy.

12:58 That reaction to the start of the volleyball scene is so funny. Also, I just heard a couple of things about that scene that are interesting. The studio executives were upset that director Tony Scott used an entire day of filming for that scene thinking it didn't belong in the movie. Scott was almost fired for that, but the studio gave him another chance. Also Kenny Loggins wrote and performed the song played during the volleyball scene, but had no part in Danger Zone at that point. The writer of Danger Zone (who also wrote Take my Breath Away) needed a new singer and Loggins had just finished singing Playing With the Boys and was asked to sing Danger Zone as well. So without that volleyball scene, we also would not have had the "Danger Zone" song as we know it.

Early F-14s had that problem with engines flame out (the scene is based on a true story) and it was corrected with new engines installed in 1987. Goose died (based on true story) because F-14 canopy was designed to separate from the airplane in a air stream. In flat spin there is no airflow, so the canopy could not "get out of the way." Something similar to the crash with Goose happened in real life several years before this movie to my dad. He was the navigator in an OV-10, a propeller plane, and he was flying next to another OV-10. The other plane's pilot turned his body to look at something, and he pulled his arm while he did it, and the propellers smashed into each other. My dad ejected from the plane, but there was a malfunction, so he was leaning forward instead of sitting straight up and down, so his head smashed into the top of the plane instead of being protected by the seat. He's an inch shorter, now, and he still doesn't remember everything about it. He said he regained consciousness, and he was already digging for a flare in his emergency pack, but he couldn't get his hands to work right. He finally found a flare, and as he was about to set it off, he looked around and saw that the entire field was on fire. So he just put it down and sat down to wait for Fire Rescue to pick him up. I tell you what, they scared the hell put of my mom when they called her and just said, "something happened..."

In a training scenario, the "deck" represents the ground. It's higher than the actual ground so that if something bad happens (e.g. engine failure) the pilots have time to recover. Top Gun was basically a recruitment movie for the Navy (that's why the Navy collaborated extensively, allowing the use of an aircraft carrier, having their pilots performing aerial maneuvers and combat simulation for the story), that's why it was tailored mainly to a male audience. Recruitment numbers for the naval aviators increased by 400% in the years following the release. Fun fact about this movie. They shot several scenes on an actual super-carrier. At one point Tony Scott wanted an additional five minutes where the carrier was heading towards sunset for a scenery shot, but that was not part of the contract. The skipper told him it costs about 5,000$ per minute taxpayer money to move this vessel, so Scott wrote him a check over 25,000$ from his own money and got his wish. Also. Contact codes: Bogey = unidentified foreign aircraft, may be civilian aircraft (not allowed to engage) Bogey threatening = moving at high speeds towards me, still unidentified (not allowed to engage) Bandit = enemy aircraft identiefied, but not attacking (not allowed to engage without direct orders, but initiate combat readiness) Hostile = Bandit has opened fire (initiate countermeasures and engage, when feasable - otherwise try to escape) Also. The RIO (radar interception officer) in the back seat has no flight control. His stick controls radar, cameras and weapons control (like a mouse cursor). Also. The reason why Goose hit the canopy, was the horizontal spin in a vertical drop created a low pressure environment above the aircraft causing the canopy not to fly out of the way as it normally would. Also. Airplanes hide their numbers by flying close together. Aircraft radar in the 80's had a much lower resolution and could not distinguish small aircraft clustered together from a single large one at greater distance.

Hey Ash, in case you still wonder how those planes take off so quickly: The boats they take off from, have these things called steam catapults (more modern ones have electric catapults); you drive your plane next to a catapult and then the guys on the deck attach your front wheel to the catapult. When your engines are spooled to full power, the catapult literally drags the plane across the deck (by it's front wheel) and launches it from it's edge at which moment it continues flying on its own power.

On an unrelated note, the F/A-18 Super Hornet (and previous version) replaced the F-14 Tomcat because it is much cheaper to buy and operate despite much lower performance in most all ways. Also, enemy aircraft threats weren't nearly yet enough to justify the extra costs at the time of its retirement in 2006. Also, stealth and certain electronic capability elements weren't immediately available to the F-14.
@jeffburnham66112 жыл бұрын
Not by the wheel, that would tear it right from the plane. The shuttle is hooked to the front landing gear, and when the catapult is launched, it propels the aircraft at the desired speed to gain lift. Each plane of that era (F-14A, A-7 Corsair, A-6 and EA-6, S-3 Viking, E2C Hawkeye, etc all have different weights so the steam for the catapult is adjusted for each aircraft. Whether its a launch or a landing (trap), the plane is at 0 to 180kts in 2 seconds for launch and 180kts to 0 in the same amount of time.

Bogey = unidentified plane, as opposed to "bandit" (hostile aircraft) No - the back seater cannot take over. The back seat guy is known as RIO (Radar Intelligence Officer edit: Radar Intercept, my bad) if you're in the navy, or WSO (Weapon Systems Officer, pronounced "woozo") in the airforce, and their job is to operate the radar, and other electronic systems. Also - Tom Skerrit was Dallas in Alien. Edit: Also also - it took a long while to figure out aircraft carriers. It used to be regular take-off, not it's steam catapults that bring the craft up to speed. Also - it took YEARS to come up with the idea of an angled deck, so that if the landing aircraft misses the arresting cables, it can go full power, and try again (previously, the deck was straight, and it was either land successfully, or crash into the planes parked in front).

Regarding your surprise at '"how fast the planes can take off". On an aircraft carrier, each plane is attached to a 25,000 Horsepower steam catapult to help them accelerate from stationary to a bit under 200 mph in about 150 yards. The F-14s weighed approximately 50,000lb fully fuelled and armed, so yes, the catapult plus full engine power plus afterburner is/was definitely needed.
@CoffeeMatt102 жыл бұрын
Full engine/afterburner was only necessary on the F-14A due to the under powered TF-30 engines. The replacement engines (F110) on the later B and D models didn’t even require full power, closer to 75%. But yes, the catapult was designed to propel an aircraft from 0-165mph+ on a 300ft “runway” in 2 seconds.

All the guys were talking about was the flying and the technology, and what their favorite scenes were. Of course when they asked us wives what our favorite scene was we answered without missing a beat "the volleyball scene". The guys looked at us like were were crazy. They did not even remember it being in the movie! BTW, on military bases across the world, the national anthem is played before the movie. A lot to write about this. I went into Navy Boot Camp a few months before this came out, I was home on leave for the first time when this was in theaters and I was busy hanging out with friends and missed it on the big screen. When I got to my first ship, a carrier that was coming in from being at sea for a week, I had to act crowd control with all the wives waiting for their men to come home. One of the wives I'll always remember telling me I looked like Goose, and still had not seen the movie. The ship's TV stations played a couple movies every day at sea and this was played quite often. I didn't see the resemblance until a few years ago, I showed someone a photo in my dress blues and I could see it, I was about mid 20's at the time. I hope you watch this at least three times before you see Top Gun Maverick, because there are continuations of many of the stories, and a lot of parallels revisited, and two cool surprises I didn't see coming. A perfect scenario (would suck for hubben I guess) would be for you to announce when and where you were going to see it, and see how many of your subscribers come and watch it with you. I have seen it twice on the big screen so far, with about 2% of the seats taken. You probably could fill all the seats for one showing. Having been on two carriers in my career, and witnessing what's called "Controlled Chaos" on the flight deck with 4 acres of area an something happening everywhere, they manage to synchronize it. I was able to bring a kid brother with me for 5 days at sea and he got to witness this as well. Four interesting things about my time on my first carrier. 1. We went to New York City for Fleet week as the Flag Ship, and the people of Manhattan bought us beers and dinners. 2. We went to New Orleans sailing up the Mississippi 162 miles for Mardi Gras. 3. We went through the Suez Cana both ways. 4. We sailed off the coast of Norway north of the Arctic Circle earning us and the ship, the title, Blue Nose. The ship's Bull Ensign painted the bull nose blue. I'll have to dig to find photos of all of these in a shoebox stashed somewhere.

there is a competing theory that it refers to a centrifugal governor and at full speed would be at their furthest displacement and would close the throttle valve thus limiting the steam supply
@earlbrown2 жыл бұрын
Actually ''balls to the wall'' comes from the early days of mechanized machinery. Speed governors were two balls that were on a spinning shaft, as the machine went faster, the balls would fly outward and close the valve a little as they went out. That way the speed could be constant with varying levels of steam input. If the device every had the balls fly off, the steam would be wide open going in the machine and it would run away greater than full speed. (and usually fling the other ball off since it didn't have enough mass causing it to go WFO). So when your machine takes off faster than it's supposed to, it's because your balls hit the wall.

We were doing all the different songs from Top Gun and finally the bus driver decided she'd had enough of our singing pulled over the bus and threatened to take us all back to school when we were within sight of our neighborhoods. This was hilarious to us because we were children. Somehow we had missed one song thus far not intentionally but the fact that we did made it that much funnier. We'd started then singing 'You've Lost That Lovin Feeling'. She flipped out and took us all the way back to school. When we got back to school she of course had to explain why she had brought the bus full of kids back to school. The school wasn't happy... with her. They laughed and told her to get back on the bus. @Aniwayas Song The point being that Danger Zone was commissioned specifically for the movie and not something pre-existing that Top Gun licensed like Ashleigh thought in this reaction video and continuously paying that type of royalty for. Some people may have found the movie via the song, but the song wouldn't have existed without the movie in the first place.

@4:25 & @6:45 regarding sweat. People forget air conditioning is relatively new. Back in the 80s, AC was not install everywhere it is today in government facilities and every public spaces. I think central AC began being install everywhere just before the mid-90s. If you were buying an apartment or house, and the listing said AC was already installed, it was a premium. That's why you see old apartments and houses with those portable AC units sticking out the window.

17:30 The actual physical act of flying an airplane is actually easier than driving a car. The vast majority of what you learn in pilot training is what you need to know to fly the plane safely. Flying a plane is much less forgiving than driving a car. Thing about how often you come within just a few feet of other cars moving at high speed in the opposite direction. Coming within 6 feet of another car happens all the time. Coming within a mile of another airplane is considered "way too close." Coming within a half mile is usually considered an emergency.

Surprised you didn't recognize Tom Skerritt from Alien or Steel Magnolias when you said he was a handsome older man, which he is! I purposefully skipped this movie when it first came out because it didn't appeal to me for some reason, but later enjoyed it when I rented it. Fun to see the cast who would later go on to other things....Goose was on the tv show ER for many years, They played Hightway to the Danger Zone a bit too much for me when this came out, maybe that's another reason I waited to see it hee hee.....

Note that Maverick’s RIO (the guy in the backseat) during the final fight was played by Tim Robbins, aka Andy in Shawshank Redemption. The F-14 radar was too powerful. Any plane on the receiving end of it would INSTANTLY know they were being tracked by it, so the F-14 pilots wouldn't typically use it to maintain their own stealth and the mystery of their location, while actively hunting enemy planes. This fact was demonstrated during the Gulf War, when Iraqi planes would bug out if an F-14 pinged them with their tracking radar.

Also, Jim Abrams, the A in ZAZ, without the two Zucker bros (but co-written by frequent ZAZ collaborator Pat Proft), did Hot Shots, the Top Gun parody. The sequel, Hot Shots Part Deux mostly parodies Rambo, Delta Force, etc, with a few gags referencing other movies like Terminator 2 and Kickboxer.

I'll leave most of the comments to others - I'm sure there will be many. But just to throw in some nice trivia. The older guy - 'Perry' - that Charlie meets in the bar when Maverick first tries to pick her up is played by Pete Pettigrew , who was a technical advisor on the film, an instructor at the actual Top Gun, and is the real life 'Viper' - Tom Skerritt's character was given his callsign after him and partially based on him. The also did a lot of work while filming this to hide the fact that Tom Cruise is quite a lot shorter than most of the rest of the cast. So there's a lot of shots with people leaning on things, or shot from a low angle etc.

Yup, bogey is a golf term in sports, meaning one-over-par at a hole, double bogey two-over-par, etc. But in this use, bogey is a US/NATO multiservice tactical brevity code. It generally refers to a radar or visual target, that's unidentified. It could possibly be hostile but not necessarily. If a target has been identified as hostile though, the code would then be a bandit.
@hgman39202 жыл бұрын
bogey is older then gold or the military. It is an archaic word meaning ghost (there's a mountain near Charlotte, NC named Booger Mountain because of this). It was adopted by the military to mean an unidentified enemy and by golfers to mean a bad score

If you hear a recognizable song in an 80's movie (Danger Zone etc) it's more likely it was created for the film, than that it was licensed. Soundtracks were some of the biggest albums of the 80's, so they invested a lot in to original music.
