Top Gun is a 1986 American action film directed by Tony Scott, and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, in association with Paramount Pictures. The screenplay was written by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr., and was inspired by an article titled "Top Guns", written by Ehud Yonay and published in California magazine three years earlier. The film stars Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis, with Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, and Tom Skerritt in supporting roles. Cruise plays Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a young naval aviator aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. He and his radar intercept officer, Lieutenant (junior grade) Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Edwards), are given the chance to train at the US Navy's Fighter Weapons School at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California.
Top Gun was released on May 16, 1986. Upon its release, the film received mixed reviews from film critics. Four weeks after release, the number of theaters showing it increased by 45 percent. Despite its initial mixed critical reaction, the film was a huge commercial hit, grossing $357 million globally against a production budget of $15 million. Top Gun was the highest grossing domestic film of 1986. The film maintained its popularity over the years and earned an IMAX 3D re-release in 2013. Additionally, the soundtrack to the film has since become one of the most popular movie soundtracks to date, reaching 9× Platinum certification. The film won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for "Take My Breath Away" performed by Berlin. In 2015, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". A sequel, titled Top Gun: Maverick, released 36 years later on May 27, 2022 and surpassed the original film both critically and commercially.

I enjoyed the glory days, going to Miramar Officers club and the BBQ joint downtown San Diego, where you filmed the famous piano scene, Great Balls of Fire. I think time spent to produce a Top Gun prequel would be better. Base the story around Duke Mitchell. You could even introduce characters like a young Mike "Viper" Metcalf and a young Rick "Jester" Heatherly, The trio could be among the first graduating class of TOP GUN, and then assigned to the VF-51 aboard the USS Oriskany in Vietnam. Love story could between Duke and his wife, maybe they were beyond soulmates? It would make his death more "powerful" in terms of an emotional movie. The main plot could revolve around Viper, Jester, and Duke fly the infamous mission over Vietnam; where he was hit and could have saved himself. However, his heroic actions saved 3 planes before his plane mysteriously disappeared. A grieving Mitchell family would be an epic emotional ending. It would be cool to see in the film where Duke lifts up on his shoulders, a young Pete Mitchell. Then Duke's wife (Maverick's mother) take that famous picture of Pete sitting on his dad's shoulders (as seen in Top Gun) before his tour of Vietnam. You could even reenact the photo of Viper and Duke too (as seen at Viper's house in Top Gun). You could CGI the F-4 Phantoms. The action and drama would be similar to the movie Pearl Harbor. You must have Hans Zimmer score the soundtrack, with tracks from various artists from the 60s and 70s.

Top gun 3 would not be a success without Tom Cruise. He would need to be in it in some way. Personally, I wish Maverick would have received a promotion to rear admiral 1 star, after completing the last mission. Admiral Kazansky submitting the request before his death. Maverick was completing his flying and career at the last mission. It would have been a nice touch from Ice and a reward for his performance. He deserved it!

If Top Gun 3 will go in fruition, Maverick will be (must be) promoted to 1 star admiral.
