It is THE best into to a movie ever. The quiet beginning music, the smoke whipping across the deck, the silhouettes, the background radio chatter and the jet engines warming up...then blam highway to the danger zone and it all kicks off..hands down freakin awesome!

The instrumental at the beginning is so eerie, but also majestic in a way. I think this happened a lot in 80's shows and movies. The intro here really reminded me of Twin Peak's intro, it's all beautiful imagery but the soundtrack makes it sound like something is looming around the corner.

This has to be one of the best action movie openings ever. The way it starts with the regal, elegant, solemn music, then the change over to badass action music at 2:35 at the moment the Tomcat's burners light and it takes off- this is such a well-done opening and the change in music is perfect. the closeups of the Tomcats afterburners, the orange sunrise/sunset, the audio getting louder when the camera focuses on the burners. Man it's been a long time since that movie came out. 1--almost every US aircraft type you see in the film has been retired (F-14 tomcat, E-6 intruder, EA-6 prowler, S-3 viking, F-8 crusader, A-4 skyhawk,) and only a handful of the F-5 Freedom Fighter (used as Mig-28 in the movie) adversary aircraft remain in naval service. 2--the carrier in the movie (Enterprise) has been retired 3--there is no longer an advanced fighter training school in Mirimar San Diego, the location was transferred to the marines and now a nevada airbase hosts the school.

@ robert lockhart, you got it backwards, Cheney who supported Reagan and policies which saw the end to the cold war and the USSR, ended the need for the great F-14 tomcat. It served our country well. You should thank Cheney for supporting a strong US navy when we needed it the most in the 80s.
@roblockhart610410 жыл бұрын
From a Republican standpoint, I understand where you're coming from (Reagonomics/star wars prog.); however, Dick Cheney wasn't half the man President Reagan was regardless of who or what he supported. Cheney always had special interest and his own agenda in mind. It's a well known fact Dick didn't like the Grumman corporation's A-6 and F-14 programs because it interfered with and competed against his bureaucratic buddies sponsored programs as well as his own personal business partnerships. Several times, he voted against further production of both aircraft (during the Cold War), as well as any updates to their aging platforms thereafter. Depreciation on active F-14's got so bad towards the end of it's life cycle, many suffer a number of problematic issues, most notably, tearing apart midair or crash landing due aging/malfunctioning equipment which only hurried it's demise. The F-15, F-18, and F-16 all received update/modernized versions while the aforementioned were completely ignored. Programs like the F-16 VISTA and XL, F-15 ACTIVE s/mtd, and F-18 harv even further this research while the proposed Super Tomcat 21 which would have made it superior to anything flying then, perhaps even now, didn't see the light of day. And why is that? Ask former defense secretary Cheney. The kiss of death came when he eventually became VP.
@UncleFester224010 жыл бұрын
robert lockhart There is a Tomcat parked at VACAPES here in Virginia Beach at the "Giantkiller" radar station. I grew up with those cats whistling me to sleep as a boy, only to be replaced by the racket of the F/A-18 Hornet. Good enough jet I suppose, but it could be QUIETER. Almost as bad as the A-6 or the F-4. Of course, the Enterprise is over at Huntington/Ingalls shipyard in Newport News being decommissioned and will be replaced by the Gerald R. Ford carrier in a few years. It's a shame that these beautiful planes are being cut to pieces.

Jimmy Frost Thanks for sharing the intell! Nice to know a trip to Iran isn't my only option, lol. And yes, I agree, it is a shame what happened to the F-14. Not a big fan of the Russian made Su-27 but it's a platform that updated quite nicely, i.e. Su-30, Su-35. Of course, it's argued that's all they could afford to do but still, would have like to have seen the Super Tomcat 21 concept fly. Would have been an amazing bird! Again, thanks!

You know its gunna be a good fuckin day when you leave the tv on over night and initially wake up to the opening scenes of the beginning of top gun. Perfectly timed. Danger zone music on the flight deck with an f14 lining up for take off in the light of dawn. Pumped at 5am lol

Anyone here who's played the single-player of Battlefield 3 should play this song during the level "Going Hunting," goes great with the in-flight check and take-off of the F-18 Hornet.

Fighting jets are the ultimate racing car and the carrier's crew the ultimate pit crew. After watching this intro I'm ready to enlist, thanks I'm never close to a recruitment center.

My Grandpa was in the pilot in the Navy in Vietnam. About........4 years ago I was 13 I think. And my grandpa knew so much, he taught me everything there is to know in the matter of time this movie ended, I was just as intelligent as my grandpa. I've seen this movie non stop ever since and I never have gotten tired of it.

This intro is far superior to the 2022 version. So is the whole film for that matter.
