I think that a slight remold and slight repaint could make a pretty cool G.I.Joe SkyStriker and have the robot mode be the pilot figure Edit: I also think that a white and red repaint with a Jetfire head sculpt would work because you can pull the 2 front parts of the wings back (shown at 3:30 and 4:17)that exposes ports for the red thruster pack that the G1 version had

The motorcycle is in both movies (sort of) very similar models anyway.. and no volleyball scene in the new one, but there is a “football” scene of sorts. Overall, glad to see this getting a reissue as I hadn’t known about it until it had already been sold out about a month. Transformers were a childhood favorite and Top Gun was my first favorite movie. The whole film, dialog, and background score (despite 2 versions of a Top Gun soundtrack, the actual film SCORE HAS NEVER actually been officially released) are completely burned into my brain. Later, did the same with Batman ‘89, and again after discovering the Star Wars trilogy around ‘91-92.

Since Hasbro owns the GoBots now (although not the original Bandai molds), they could (and IMO, should) make a first party repaint as Leader-1.

@@jamesdlin7 Unfortunately, they only own _most_ of Gobots. The vast majority of the molds used for Gobots are still owned by Takara's main rival, Bandai. As is the franchise from which those mold came (Machine Robo). At least IIRC. If that doesn't sound like a problem, think of how skittish Hasbro/Takara was of releasing G1 Jetfire/Skyfire toys for a while. HasTak would probably be okay releasing an updated Leader-1, but there is still a decent chance Bandai could make things tricky for them, at least in Japan.

Something interesting that I’m not sure if people noticed: this figure is actually a remold of Cybertron: Thundercracker figure from 2006

REALLY? I knew it had to be retooled from something since they wouldn't likely budget a new mold just for a crossover figure, but that this kind of engineering came from 2006 is amazing.

@@AztecCroc The entire jet shell appears to be different, but the legs, torso, and some elements of the arms are functionally Cybertron Thundercracker. That swing-down hip assembly is very memorable, as is the nestled arm arrangement.

I'm impressed how little robot kibble is visible under the plane mode, I haven't seen such a good job since Machine Wars Eagle Robo. Is this an original mold or a retool of something from Siege because I don't remember another jet transforming like this.

The plane mode is good coz the underside of it looks like a real plane (at least, compared to movie star scream). However I agree with u that the colour is very bad. On robot mode, the shoulder should be made higher. Add some kneecaps from extra ummph. This plane looks real good if the colour is right!

Great review. I only picked this one up cause I still think it's a cool tf crossover and I like Top Gun and getting stoked on the sequel about to be released as of the time of my comment. If I wasn't concerned with resale value, I think this figure could use some panel line and weathering to take up the overall look.. might even help to tone down and mask the less than spectacular one sided paint patterning.

I understand what Hasbro was trying to do with the paint job, by trying to replicate real dirt and weathering on jets. However the execution doesn’t work. I think the digital paint apps look terrible, and it’s made worse when the robot mode & undercarriage are virtually unpainted so it looks uneven. Honestly I think a simple black wash to bring out the panel lines would’ve been better.

The deco is actually similar to the real-world Tomcat, just cheaply done. The missiles looked odd to me to at first, but again they're quite true to the payload of the real thing, aside from the solid wall of plastic that connects them.

This figure looks super cheap. It was an easy miss for me. I really enjoy the Gigawatt and Ectotron, mostly for how good their alt modes are. This would be an excellent alt mode if it had a decent paint job. The shiny paint on the head really brings out the overall lack of paint . Thanks for the review. Much appreciated.

F-14 and F-15 are completely different aircraft. Though the overall planforms are similar, you could never make one look like the other.

Maverick rode a motorcycle in the original movie. Out of the three movie transformers that has been done, I would rather have the other two instead of that jet. Granted, I am trying to figure out why the bike included looks more like the Elita-One figure from the second Transformers movie then the one from Top Gun. I _think_ the colour scheme is meant to make the plane look like it's been exposed to the weather at sea? It doesn't really work though. As nice as the figure looks, I can't get past that 20-odd quid nostalgic movie tie-in tax. If I want a stupidly expensive toy of a fighter plane that turns into a robot in a vaguely Macross style, I may as well bite the bullet and get one of the fancy Arcadia or Bandai ones for 200-300. And when I say get one, I mean get another to go with the couple dozen in my nerdcave already.

I can't disagree with the paint job, but I think what really bothers me the most is the plastic itself, that almost translucent plastic just looks really bad. I was happy with it, but honestly the whole thing just feels severely rushed. They get points for at least making a mostly accurate plane mode without being able to tell it's a robot unless you know where to look. I get this was just some collab thing and you're kinda paying for the nostalgia part, but the Ecto-1 and Delorean time machine were both much superior figures with excellent paint and accessories. I feel like this project was the result of giving it to the intern at Hasbro when someone said "What's Top Gun? Oh yeah, that movie with the planes. Didn't it have a motorcycle in it too?"

If I had to hazard a guess, the actual paint is supposed to be the original color, but worn away from time and use, exposing the "metal" underneath. Probably would have come off better if they didn't use the soapy Apeface plastic, but whatever.

Yeah, the Top Gun Jet being cast out of the cheap Prototype translucent plastic and it having no paint at all is a real let down. What was Hasbro thinking??? Looks like the paint budget was blown on painting the head of the Jet and the Mini Motorcycle :( Why Hasbro, Why??? Gray plastic would have been better for a start. Are there any other crossovers that have been announced yet?
