This wasn't just a movie, it felt like a love letter to flight. I couldn't help being in the theatre thinking that it was actually beautiful in the way they shot it. Not to get all corny but it's 100 percent true and the way they incorporated Val Kilmer was surprisingly deep. As much as I love all the MCU and even some DC properties, it’s so refreshing to have a simple, clean storytelling with realistic action scenes. Tom Cruise knows his “edge” and unique value he brings to his fans and general audiences. This is not an Oscars contender (maybe technical awards and cinematography) but the flight scenes just keep you on edge.

To be fair, they didn’t name the enemy nation in the first movie aside from showing a red star and yellow ring around it for a national symbol. That movie came out in the 80s and could’ve easily just said Russia or China and didn’t while being funded by the pentagon. Keep all of those details in mind, because in this film they actually have Russian jets, while in the first film they repainted American F-5s and called them a make believe “Mig 28”, while in this film they call the new 5th Gen Fighters “Felon”, which is the NATO reporting name of the newest Russian stealth fighter, the Su-57, and they actually show that exact aircraft. If you wanna get technical and know better, they give more hints towards the enemy in this film than the last. Honestly if there’s any reason to not name the enemy, it’s because there’s direct US Military funding being applied to this film and the feds in particular probably don’t wanna piss anybody off, not the filmmakers.

It makes sense for the original movie's conflict to be tacked on at the end b/c the concept is that Maverick was his own worst enemy. It allows the characters to be in sports competition mode until the real test begins. The structure is that we're gonna see the protagonist's mistakes throughout the film and then witness him correct those mistakes in the final act. At the very least, we actually saw the enemy at the beginning of the film as opposed to this sequel. Hence, we already know how threatening they can be.

I recently re-watched Phase one and they were really pushing hard with quality as they had to prove themselves to the audience. Phase 4 has been just flexing and resting on their high horse. they know it'll make huge bank, we're marvel! Tom Cruise is the only guy making big budget blockbusters focused on story and character with mind blowing stunts. I would never want to be in a room alone with the guy, but I'll watch whatever he makes.

@@jesse_reznor When I go back to Phase One, it feels kinda quaint. I dunno if they were pushing the quality, so to speak, but they were definitely trying to get the audience to invest in characters who (at that point) were gradually getting more fantastical. Still good, but purposely laying the groundwork. There's a lot that didn't work in that Phase, but given 20/20 hindsight, whatever needed kinks, were definitely worked out later on. As for Tom Cruise, yeah he really is the only guy shows that level of care with his blockbusters. Granted, they've been tied to his respective big franchises (ie. Mission Impossible, and now Top Gun). But like you said: while I may not want to necesarily have a beer with the guy, I'll watch his movies because you can tell he's putting his all into it.

First time I saw the original was in limited re-release for the IMAX format and I truly understood why it was so iconic. It was at the time that Part 2 was starting to take shape. Cruise, producer Bruckheimer and director Kosinski (2013's Oblivion) found a way to make some greatness. I enjoyed every minute of this. The cast, storytelling, filmmaking and the nostalgia of the original give you all the feels. One of my favorite films of the year.

Saw it last night in the Cinema, I didn't realise how emotional I'd feel....I grew up watching the first movie non stop, and rewatch it every year maybe till today.... Watching last night there were so many moments I felt either emotional BC of nostalgia, or for the music, characters etc.... The Val kilmer scene got to me as I'd just watched his doc last week... Loved this film 10/10

1 year old already!!! I saw it with my sister and her boyfriend Memorial Day weekend The film opens with the same 80’s energy of movie 1 which is good to get back to basics This definitely does many things miles higher than the first film The fighter jet sequences are way more intense putting the viewer in the cockpits going up, down, sideways and all the various aerodynamics The sound editing and mixing is brilliant giving off that intensity of these aircrafts The drama is actually legitimate and doesn't ground everything to a halt Cruise still owns this role but learning now that being cocky has its disadvantages and there's even a touching cameo by an actor from the original that feels like a perfect sendoff This movie kinda pushes it being over 2 hours long but it still delivers the fun summer popcorn feels that the original director Tony Scott established I absolutely loved Lady Gaga’s number in this too Cliched ending aside and being over 2 hours this is way more of a coherent piece of character drawing and more exhilarating spectacle piece This was absolutely worth the wait!

Original top gun was all about like celebrating the airforce and fighter jets and i just never found any of that cool or interesting, but best thing i liked about 80s top gun was Kelly McGhillis, damn she was FINE AF in that movie. Gotta say though this one looks real with the actual flying jets for real with the actors.
