Top Gun: Maverick opened to critical acclaim and box office records paying off Tom Cruise's decades long hesitation to rush a sequel into production. Returning as Pete Mitchell the movie employs practical effects over CGI setting it above your standard modern day blockbuster. And Tom Cruise is probably all HA HAAAAAAR I LOVE MOVIE MAGIC. And that's probably true. Anyways here's our review.

I think Tom Cruise not hiding the fact that he is both older and shorter than pretty much everybody else in the movie plays a huge role in the movie's overall success.

Tom Cruise being short is an advantage as a fighter pilot. Shorter people have a shorter distance for the blood in their body to go when pulling high G forces. So Tom cruise can physically handle tighter turns than your average height man. Therefore this movie is just being accurate by having short man cruise in it.

Hangman wasn't the Iceman character. Hangman was the Maverick character, taking insane risks. Rooster was the Iceman character, playing it safe to complete the mission simulation. This is interesting first because he's carrying too much caution due to his dad's accident and second because Maverick himself, on the other side of a life of experience, can respect Rooster's reservation, but knows it must be balanced with a measure of instinct. The real genius of this movie is that it's like Maverick watching Top Gun, seeing himself and his comrades in these younger pilots. He knows their shortcomings like we do when we watch that "cheesy" old movie. Just like we do when we remember the idiocies of our own youth. This is how you do a 35-year sequel without sidelining the main character.

I like how they showed even Hangman being a skillful guy but Maverick just has much more experience and thinks outside the box. Even Hangman was a bit of a dick but actually was a good guy and didn't like Rooster based on him thinking "He's not ready" and showed Hangman as more experienced. They showed that the pilots were all physically fit since they needed to be very sharp while flying and shows how much strain it actually takes. I like how they showed the enemy as being a legit threat and even 2 enemy fighters with modern equipment became a huge issue.

I love the film deifies and humanizes fighter pilots at the same time. As you said although the pilots are as fit as can be and are at the top of their game, they’re not invincible in anyway shape or form and they make mistakes. Coyote passes out from the 9G climb Phoenix and Bob loose their jet to a bird strike Rooster almost blows the mission by playing it safe There’s a real human element in TG Maverick that wasn’t as prominent as the first and that’s commendable.

@@BullGator-kd6ge even Jon Hamm and Ed Harris played the hard stern higher up well. They didn't want Maverick to fail but they just didn't think what he wants can't be done and allows him to prove them wrong. Well for one thing, unlike most legacy sequels, this one had to do heavier lifting by not being a slave to the merchandising so it doesn't have the same quality of getting away with essentially just giving up it's new stuff in favor of putting the old on a pedestal ala things like Jurassic World, Afterlife and Force Awakens. It's more akin to legacy sequels like "Tron:Legacy", "Mad Max: Fury Road" or "Blade Runner 2049" where they give plenty of breathing room for the new stuff to stand out with very little reverence to past material. And, let's also be honest about the fact that the original wasn't quite the most interesting thing on a plot or character level. There are moments, but it's really bathed in an 80sness that really feels more like a time capsule than a worthwhile plot. This film actually managed to have it's moments wrapped around narrative and character so it actually would be, you know, an actual film rather than a recruitment ad with some cheese.

The cobra maneuver the F-18s performs is also a supermanouver, but the enemy fighters are far more capable. 2. Days of Thunder sequel... Well Cruise is pretty much the same age now as Robert Duvall was back in 1990. So let Tom be the guy that has to train the next guy that's gonna win Daytona in a way that's so impossible, that Tom has to prove it can be done and ends up driving the lead car to victory, but crashes out in a fireball... Everyone keeps saying this, but I honestly can't think of any recent movies where they "shit on the existing characters." In the most recent Spider-Man it seemed like a love letter to all the Spider Men. The Star Wars movies, Luke, Leia and Han all died, but like, they were still heroes and mentors to the characters, even if the films were bland. In Mad Max Fury Road, Max is like the whole reason Furiosa and the women survive. So I don't understand this "take," really.

It works because the original source material and characters were respected throughout the story and writing. At the same time, the IP was given enough time to breathe to call for an additional movie from the fans. It also helps that with Covid, there haven't been too many blockbuster action movies, and to be honest, a dumb action flick that I can turn off my brain for 2 hours and forget all the screwed up things going on in the world is a nice little win as well.

Tom doesnt have to do any action in these, just acting. And get this, he can win his long overdue Oscar for the Hustler trilogy film, just like Newman finally won his Oscar for The Color of Money. @29:20 I think the maneuver that the enemy pilot pulls is called a J-turn, which can only be achieved via thrust vectoring. Typically, planes have thrust directed along the centre line of the plane facing forward, but thrust vectoring allows the thrust from the engines to apply force on the plane on a different angle, so not straight forward, so planes can pull off crazy maneuvers like that.

Another reason this movie works so well is that this story is so relatable to those of us that were also the target audience for the original in `86. We are around Mav's age and experiencing the same things he is going through in this film. This is, after all, really about HIM more than the mission or the passing of the torch. Yes, the `getting over Goose' arc coupled with his relationship with his boy Rooster is part of that, but it's mostly about the impending inevitable push to usher you out to pasture/retirement/put you in their rear view mirror and forget you. They use the mechanism of technology rendering human pilots irrelevant as one such source for this but it happens nonetheless even without such changes. Maverick is faced with being outdated and even a nuisance to the institution he has devoted his life to. For him to get to the point that he welcomes his next chapter in life and is ready to put this old one behind him is the real story here. Yes, it's in his grief with Goose, his relationships with women including Penny, his legacy as an aviator, and the badly damaged relationship he had with Bradley (Rooster). Really though it's all that and a lot more. As someone not too much younger than Maverick is in this film I can relate to ALL of that, and I'm sure all of my generation does too. So this is a powerful and deeply personal one for us. I applaud them for how they handled it all though. I still felt really good about this and had a lot of fun every time I watched it (3X so far). I didn't expect this movie to actually impact me and just thought it would be fun. It's now one of my favorite films of all time.

Am I the only person who realised that the mission they go on is not (directly) a rip off of the Star Wars trench run, but is in actual fact an almost direct rip off of the second mission from the 1998 Top Gun: Hornet's Nest PC game by Microprose. In that, you literally had to fly down a twisting canyon in Siberia staying below the rim to avoid SAM sites, before popping up over a ridge to take out a massive missile launcher and then dogfight your way out. I mean, I have absolutely zero problem with that, I loved that game and loved that mission in particular, but I just think its funny how identical it is and even more so that I seem to be the only person in the world that noticed this (probably because no one played the game, reading reviews now apparently it was trash, but me as an idiot kid loved it) but I'm kind of hoping that if I put this out there I might find I'm not the only one. If not its possible my memory of that mission was a weird precognitive fever dream from my childhood, as I'm struggling to find evidence of it online.

So I'm interested to hear the story about this movie, I was surprised to hear that people like it. This is off topic, but there's growing evidence to suggest that drinking up to 3 cups of coffee daily lowers your chances to die early by a significant amount (up to 30%!), even if you put a teaspoon of sugar in your coffee. I'd still steer clear of artificial sweeteners, though. Decaf coffee provides the same benefit, so if you're sensitive to caffeine you can still take advantage of this.
