I think it would help if they humanized the imperials. There were two types of imperials during the war. The imperial who genuinely believed in galactic peace and order and the imperial who was strictly loyal to Palpatine's dynasty. That's why there was an imperial Civil War, but knowing Disney, it's too much to expect a universe with 6 decades of acceptable source material to actually be used in a fully fleshed out compelling story in such a manner.

What are you talking about? Only two rebel fighters survived the battle of Yavin IV, and they had shields and hyperdrives and on-board astromechs. While most of the short-range TIE fighters survived, even after the base had been destroyed. TIE fighters have skills. And a huge numerical advantage, but mostly skills. And a government that actually cares about them and brings them back home even from deep space.

Going by legends, there were actually a few known Imperial TIE Aces. Han Solo was one a full Squadron Leader, right up until he disobeyed orders to kill a wookie who murdered the entire crew of a Imperial Slave Transport (First meeting with Chewbacca, he refused because his more or less mother figure growing up, was a wookie.) And Baron Soontir Fel, Top of his class in the Imerpial Naval Academy (he and Han basically set goals and standards in simulations within the Academy). A not-insignificant majority of Rebel Aces were Imperial trained, some jumped ship, still in the Academy, others left after graduation. (Biggs Darklighter and Wedge Antilies to name two.) The reason for this is quite simple, the TIE/LN Starfighter itself. If you are given an unshielded, glorified Swarmcraft that is if anything, fast and can more or less shoot straight, you either get really good as a pilot, or you get dead.

Yeah, like the TIE Fighter game storyline. Where instead of your character defecting to the rebels, your commanding officer is defecting his entire force to the rebels; and as a member of the Order of the Emperor, you are loyal and must escape by taking out the rest of your squadron and then fleeing back to the rest of the Imperial Forces.

3 things I'd love to see is a TV show or movie that was oriented towards a squadron of TIE-fighter pilots, a battalion of Stormtroopers, and the incredibly obscure and underrated galactic rebel alliance special force units like the rebel saboteurs and rebel troopers. I would really prefer the Imperial forces to be portrayed in such a way on screen. We're always made to believe that the Rebels are so massively out classed, yet they ALWAYS effortlessly mow through hoards of Imperial cannon fodder. Making the bad guys fearsome makes the struggle of the protagonists that much more relatable and emotionally investing.

I think I can say this for all the true fans of SW, we need more stories where the Empire is at it's best. Legends and Canon are filled with those stories, elite stormtrooper squads, unmatched TIE pilots, spies and very good officers. The Death Star was built by a governor who was planning to usurp the empire. While the navy was busy maintaining interstellar trade. Its destruction restored peace to the galaxy. The Death Star II, on the other hand, was built with resources that could have benefitted the empire otherwise.
