if you're into long slowburn stories and the thought of a respected noble count secretly being a cruel monster and getting away with all the horrible things he does gives you chills, i recommend dracula (though if you're young or just generally bored pretty fast, i recommend frankenstein and the strange case of dr jekyll and mr hyde MUCH more. dracula is genius, but the first time i tried to read it when i was 13 and gave up when i was halfway through because i was so bored with how slow it was, but the same year i read frankenstein and loved every second of it. is it worth the tiring pace? yes, to me it is, but if you want a more entertaining and fast-paced story, dracula may not be the one for you) if you're into shorter books filled with big events that despite being disturbing will leave you feeling extremely sad as well, you find human technology really interesting and the possibilities of technology scare you sometimes, i recommend frankenstein. jekyll and hyde is the shortest and it will keep your attention all the way through, even though we all know the big reveal of the story. its vibe is so mysterious and suspenseful it might make you wonder what the fuck is up before realising you KNOW what's up, and i think that's why i love it so much. how despite everyone knowing the story, we still feel the struggle of the narrators as they're trying to uncover the truth and connect the lines so vividly that the reveal in the last 2 chapters will seem shocking and will disturb you and very few stories can make you feel all that if you know the ending.

One of my favorite horror stories of all time is the re-telling/prequel to "Dracula", "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova. It's so immersive, so evocative of Stoker's original tale, and it's one of those creeping ones that you don't realize you're sucked into it until you're already 150 pages in and you can't slow down. Nothing will ever top Stoker's original, but it's just a beautiful read. I also highly recommend King's son Joe Hill as an author in general; his books "NOS4A2" and "Horns" are both great horror ("NOS4A2" scared me, actually) and also just amazing stories in general.

You mentioned graphic novels, but the artist who - to me - best encompasses what comics can bring to horror OVER OTHER MEDIA is Junji Ito. Yes, it is a manga writer, but bear with me here. He is a master of the "page turn", which is that little bit of interactivity that separates comics from other visual media. His use of this interactivity, the art of building up suspense to make that single double-page spread image all that more horrifying is awe-inspiring. For a specific work of his, I would recommend "Uzumaki". His short stories are his biggest strength and if you want a small taste of what he has to offer, I'd recommend The Enigma of Amigara Fault as an appetizer - you can find it online for free and it's a 10 minute read. Uzumaki on the other hand is not a short story, it's more about the scope of a novella I'd say. It's deeply unsettling lovecraftian horror about a small japanese town that becomes obsessed with the form of the spiral and plundges deeper and deeper into madness. It's not a particularly long read either, you can easily read it in an afternoon and man it is worth it.

The tough thing with recommending horror is there’s so many facets to consider. For a younger crowd, say early teens, I’d go with The Demonata series by Darren Shan. Great horror and gore verging on the disturbing, but also just a great story in general. For haunted house horror, The Haunting of Hell House, Burnt Offerings, and The Woman in Black are all great recommendations. For Stephen King, I always go with Pet Sematary. And as an all around recommendation, if anyone hasn’t read Clive Barker, do so. So much weird, fun in Barkers work.

I just finished "The Exorcist" a few days ago. Really enjoyed it. There's a real pervading sense of dread and pathos to it, and no cheap scares! If you're looking for eldritch horror in the vein of Lovecraft, I'd recommend Laird Barron. I read "The Imago Sequence" this year and a tribute to his writing by various horror authors, called "The Children of Old Leech" which was fantastic! Really weird, not-straightforward stories which are unsettling and creepy, and follow a central lore-based theme.

Marooned alone at midnight, miles out of town at the top of a hill, in a raging blizzard in the small town radio station I worked in, I knew I wasn't getting out of there before late morning. The only thing to read I could find was The Shining. I'd avoided King, being a chicken, but I spent that incredibly scary night reading the whole thing. I agree. Macbeth is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays and definitely a good one for Haloween. I also like Hamlet during this season, though the ghost doesn't play as big a role there as the witches do in Macbeth.

I know this was geared more towards novels, but some of the best horror/suspense is found in short stories in my opinion. The Lottery by Shirley Jackson is one of my all time favorites and even our dude Brandon Sanderson’s Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell is an insanely good spooky read.

Pardon for the late reply as this just came up on my feed. I am currently reading IT as my scary movie month read. I read The Shining this last winter. My favorite line in that book was toward the end when Jack said "Masks off then" when he had Danny trapped in a hallway. It refers back to the mask party that is still being played out by the spirits haunting the hotel and the hotel basically telling Danny no more games, your dad is gone and it's just you and me.

Question:I know that Halloween ended, but I want to know what is a good Horror book series that has these qualities?: -Can be full on Dark Fantasy or Paranormal/Supernatural Horror. -While being mainly horror, can also have elements of mystery, humor, and romance(NONE of that Twilight related garbage). -Mainly centering around Vampires and Werewolves, but can also have Witches, Zombies, Ghosts, Demons, etc. -Getting deep and heavy on ancient lore and mythology of those creatures of the night. What are some good recommendations?

Would recommend Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay. Also, Algernon Blackwood’s The Willows (Lovecraft said it was the best supernatural story) Not necessarily horror, but In the Miso Soup by Ryu Murakami. And Junji Ito’s manga.

By the time I finished The Road, I felt like I had walked all that way with them. Holy cow, that was relentless grim. It was exhausting - mentally & somehow physically. I've never had that reaction when reading a book. In fact, the only way I managed to endure was by letting my mind go even further, darker than what was happening. By the time I got to the end, it felt like a relief because it didn't end quite as horrifically as I expected.

I had to read it for three different English classes: American Novelists, Modern American Novels, and ...well, I cannot remember what the third class was. i mentioned to my advisor that I really despised this book, that it was so dark and so much imagery I couldn't fathom, but my imagination could. That I never want to read it again. She was surprised so many professors included it in their curriculum. My advice was that the professors should talk to each other and find out what they were using as source literature. Yes, it was popular at the time, but there were a lot of other equally as good novels of the same genre they could have used.

Hi Daniel...as always great work...Good recommendations, but there is also another author who is missing (as with sooo many others) but the great James Herbert is the British Stephen King...with classics like Rats, Magic Cottage etc...but a few years ago there was a great book released - badly adapted for TV though - The Secret of Crickley Hall - Spooky, tragic, intrigue...the lot. I would like to wish your channel and you every success buddy :D

Great video. I just recently finished Dracula. It was an exceptional gothic horror story. Masterly crafted, so much so that it is No wonder it's kept us scared for over a century. At the moment I'm in the middle of The Huanitng of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. Three chapters in and it is weird, however in the best way I think. I recommend two books for you; that is Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist and Hemlock Grove By Brian McGreevy. Happy reading. And happy Halloween.

Very seldom do I see a recommendation for Let The Right One In so I was surprised to see your comment here. I absolutely agree with you. I read the book a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I don't usually enjoy vampire type stories but Let The Right One In had had so many other good story elements to it they I couldn't put it down.

Agree on Richard Matheson 100 percent. Just brilliant! I, myself do not read much horror, and I know the book I am recommending is not horror but it does have a creepy and unsettling atmosphere, which could be related to horror. It is the Gormenghast trilogy by Mervyn Peake. A lot of writers have used motives from this trilogyin their own work, Martin and Zelazny, for example, to name but a few. It is a unique work of art.

I'd love it if you pick up Samanta Schweblins "Fever Dream"! It is super short but so suspense (and weird). It's translated fiction and maybe a bit out of the range you normally read. Second choice: Brian Evensons short story collection "Song for the Unraveling of the World" because he is an amazing author and this collection has sci-fi elements too

I've always felt like The Road is light compared to some of McCarthy's other novels. Namely Blood Meridian and Child of God. They aren't horror so much as they are horrific. And by the way, glad your dad picked Something Wicked. It's the perfect Oct. book in my opinion.
