@@jellyrollnorton Transition from limping to walking. Cuts to all the pinned stories on bulletin board with Verbal's account in the background. Final cut to him talking about himself when he's talking about 'Keyser Soze'. The name Verbal being a clever hint of how his account were just the words of an unreliable narrator. Great editing.

In the end - the usual suspects is a movie about an agent who has the world’s most notorious criminal in his grasp, and is too blinded by his own obsession with someone else (Keaton) to see the truth right in front of him. And the audience falls for it right along with him. It’s still one of my favourite movies of all time.

It´s interesting that you mentioned that. I just saw a couple of days ago a retired American Detective saying that investigators all over the world screw up investigations by thinking they know the culprits and try to link evidences to them, instead of conducting an unbiased investigation and see where that leads them. I don´t work in law enforcement but I see how you can be "lured' by an easy answer sometimes. Specially when you are under a lot of pressure. Cheers from Brazil

The Usual Suspects is one of the best film examples of Chekhovs Gun (if you show something you’d better use it): in the first few moments of the movie you see the watch, the lighter and the cigarette case on Keyser. In the personal effects at the station the list them and then show them again at the end.

What’s also really great about this movie, and the big reveal, is that even the viewers and reactors who figured out that Verbal is Keyser Soze are still surprised and blown away by the way he pulled it off (the quotes matching up with the wall, the coffee cup, etc., and then the agent’s words about being smarter than Verbal). It’s possibly the best twist ending ever! Like with Hannibal Lecter in “Silence Of The Lambs”, you never want to cross paths with Keyser Soze, but you can’t help but be captivated by the character, and the acting that brings him to life!

The thing most people seem to miss is that the whole movie is actually a failure for Keyser. He set this whole thing up to kill the one man who could identify him and in the end, not only is there another witness who can identify him, but the FBI has his police sketch. He's more identifiable now than he was if he had done nothing.
@MZAH1986
@MZAH1986 2 ай бұрын
no one can confirm any thing of that, the witness is dead and cant attend to court to testify for that, no finger prints for him in the crime scene. remember no evidence link him their, keyser wanted the police to arrest him, to guided them to any other outcome. and how ever the sketch is there, but it is just worthless, they already have cameras in the building and can compare the sketch to the videos, but all of that is nothing in court, it is the end of the road. the witness is dead.

I'm an idiot. When I first watched this (on a friend's VHS) I was immediately suspicious when Kujan loudly declares "Because I'm smarter than you." and turned to my friend and said "well that's obviously going to be shown to be _very_ wrong". I was smart enough to realise that the line was a massive red flag but too dumb to put it together with the plot twist that Verbal was the real Keyser Soze until it was shown to me. (My friend was still annoyed that I'd 'worked it out' so quickly, when I actually hadn't.) It was years later when I actually realized that Keyser actually lost. All the effort put into killing the one guy who could identify him just lead to more people who then could.

The one thing about this movie, while I do love it. Keyser did kinda fail in the end, if you think about it? Because the whole reason he setup the boat hit, was to kill the guy who could ID him? Well, by the end of this movie, they got a physical description from the survivor, and all the cops that interacted with him, can certainly ID him as well. They probably don't have his actual name. Because I doubt Keyser is even his actual name? But, his picture would certainly circulate in like the Most Wanted list, etc. I'm sure he also wouldn't live in America, but his entire reason for setting all this up, is kinda irrelevant. Because even the crime family group that was buying the guy who could ID, would surely have people inside these various Police, FBI, places, that can give them that drawing. And, they probably even have pictures of him, when he was in that lineup in the beginning?
@1Apep1

Was that the actual reason, though? It might as well just be something he made up, because it is plausible and simple enough for the cops to believe, so they stop looking into it. "To a cop the explanation is never that complicated. It's always simple."

Saw Spacey in Inherit the Wind at the Old Vic, he was brilliant on stage. There he was playing a character maybe 20 years older than himself, so shuffled a bit when he walked, stopped a bit and affected a crack in his voice. Genius.

8:51 - The "awkwardAshleigh" reaction is by far the best. The long pauses to let it sink in, her lip trembling, etc.. Seeing all these were great though because I miss the feeling of shock that you get on first viewing. But the crazy thing is that the movie is still just as good on repeat viewings even when you know the ending.

So many of these ‘reactors’ paused it in the middle of Spacey delivering one of the greatest lines in cinematic history. (I know that phrase has existed in various forms for centuries… but the way it’s used here, & Spacey’s delivery… just… bruh.😎 🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️. I’m jealous of the people watching this & experiencing ‘The Keyser Revelation’ for the first time.

I saw this movie on opening night in the movie theater, with my girlfriend. She guessed the twist when Verbal was collecting his personal belongings, she said "it's him - he's picking up a gold lighter". I thought there was a 3rd person (I knew it wasnt Keaton). I said to her "nah, it'll be fine ..." ... the reveal comes and my mind is blown!

What really happened was Keyser Soza got his revenge and he used those guys to do it..Right off the bat Verbal is giving a statement and then gets immunity meaning anything said afterward is inadmissible in court so he could literally make anything up outside of that statement..That and the fact that he's protected from up on high by the prince of darkness..The Chief, Mayor, Governor all get involved for a crippled thief is another clue who Verbal really is..Brilliant writing but the clues are there..The composite sketch near the end is another dead give away..

"It's because you're stupid Verbal, it's because you're a cripple." I love this line so much. Agent Kujan overlooks Verbal as a suspect because he's supposedly this harmless, stupid man and he projects his own worldview onto Keaton, a man he despises. The audience sympathizes with Verbal for the same reason Kujan disrespects him, so we're ignoring a lot of signs that something about this whole story just doesn't add up. Keaton didn't know who Verbal was either. Keyser appeals to his kind heart to vouch for him to the other guys. He's this shaky, palsy ridden guy until it's time to smoke a dude with a well-placed shot. The look on his face in that scene is more than enough to spill the beans on his true identity, but the audience has enough Verbal credit built up to ignore it. The story Keaton tells about Keyser has him with long black hair, something that really only fits a pre-balding Verbal or the dead Fenster. Sure, it could be artistic license but it's another clue for sure.

This movie got a lot of complaints from critics when it first came out, and when you think about it, it sort of makes sense: it sort of feels like a betrayal to realize that only the first and last scenes in the movie were real, and nothing else that happened can be judged on its merits since it was all an elaborate lie.

The guy on the boat was his _accountant_ and was/would be testifying. Huge, huge huge difference. Also everyone already knew "what he looked like", they just didn't know he was hiding under the Verbal Kent Identity, which he clearly was finished with.

@marklewen9384 Yes. And really, that may have been the one single true thing. It's right put there in the open, but we have no way of knowing exactly what even really happened, because the entire story is Verbal/Kaiser playing us AND Agent Coulion. One of the Great Twists of all time. Up there with 6th Sense, Unbreakable.
