Top Microsoft executives left to start a new AI company in China. Why?

New advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) will place ever-greater demands on computing power, and ever-faster chips to power the industry. Without such chips, AI firms will simply be unable to compete with the companies which can get them.
The export bans on the fastest and best-performing chips are intended to deny Chinese companies access to them, and thereby preclude them from building top AI technologies. However, top Microsoft executives left MSFT to start an AI company in Shanghai.
Why would a Microsoft Vice President, and its Chief Scientist, and a handful of others, be motivated to leave million-dollar careers to form an AI startup in China, if they could no longer access the world's best AI semiconductors, as they could at MSFT?

I think the one thing the US/collective west underestimates is just how many of their top scientists and engineers are not from the US or western nations. There is rarely ever a top scientific achievement made in the US or the west that didn't have the input of a foreign born scientist or engineer, and for the most part my observations indicate that these people are usually of Chinese or Indian origin. I doubt the current US administration understands how this is going to end up crippling western scientific progress when a lot of these folks go back to their countries, like these former high level Microsoft employees have done.

If Taiwan was able to become the advanced semiconductor factory of the world why shouldn't mainland China be able to repeat this success?
@TheGreatAmphibian
@TheGreatAmphibian Ай бұрын
Not a good argument. Taiwan relies on huge technological inputs from Europe and the USA: China won’t get these as things stand. By analogy, it’s like Taiwan was able to buy machine tools and hire car designers from abroad, but China is going to have make its own advanced machine tools. It’s not impossible, but is several times harder. The latest ASML lithography machines are made in the Netherlands but rely on components from a chain of 5000 subcontractors with decades of experience in very specialised and extremely precise manufacturing. Landing on the moon is much, much easier than replicating that. I think China will do it, but the Taiwan argument isn’t a good one.

A VERY SIMPLE fact that most people find it hard to understand is that the US is good at breaking through things from Zero to One, but the Chinese are very good in dominating things from one to 100. For many countries, even if you gave them the full blue print, they still couldn't produce the good. But for Chinese, even if they have only one third of the blue print, they can complete the puzzle and come out with a final product that is better than the original. Chinese are excellent in marathons, Americans are good at sprints.

As a Chinese person, I do not accept the notion that Chinese people are not adept at creating something from nothing. Throughout history, there have been many great innovations by the Chinese, it's just a pity that due to certain factors, they did not develop into theoretical sciences. China possesses a vast number of innovative talents who are extremely intelligent and have made many innovations from scratch. It's just that, compared to the United States, they may not be as prominent yet, and many people simply haven't paid attention or understood this. The reason why China was not noticeable in the past is that it was very poor, far less wealthy than the United States. Once the Chinese become wealthy and have sufficient capital to experiment and make mistakes, I believe that innovations from scratch will become increasingly common, and one day, China will surpass the United States in this regard.

As a Chinese, would you say that you are more nationalist than socialist? Or are you more socialist than nationalist? Or would just say that you are equally patriotic and socialist? And what about Chinese people in general? What is your impression of them? For example, what do you learn in the school system, and would you say that Chinese media are more “socialist” than “nationalist”? Since I come from a country in the imperial core (Norway, Europe) I have somewhat negative associations with nationalism, but I know, of course, that there’s a difference between nationalism in “oppressing” countries then in “oppressed” countries. But again, if it’s the case that China is more nationalistic than socialist, then I’d find it a bit more scary if China becomes too dominant in the world. But if the internationalist socialism is still the strongest ideology in China I would be more optimistic on behalf of humanity. I’ll be happy if you want to tell me about what your impression of regular Chinese people’s ideology is. Or if that becomes too generalizing, then I’m curious about your impression of Chinese people in your region, or at least t people that you know, in your environment. Best regards a Norwegian that doesn’t know any Chinese person 😊❤️
@teac117
@teac117 Ай бұрын
@@jorgi6335 You can understand the chinese by noting how they greet. "Have you eaten yet?" There's a bit of shared sufferring implied in that, passed down by generations (1-2 for mainlanders, 2-4 for diaspora). This promotes a bit of empathy. This will also dilute and asymptotically approach western standards, as we proceed to many generations of 'well-to-do's' or 'silver-spoons' to borrow the western phrase. Chinese culture has no affinity towards nationalism / socialism, as both can exist, and has existed in various balances in the past, just like the west. We are just are behind you and still have the familia (filail) bonds. I'm sure there are still some segments of Norwegian population that have retained that (likely more rural).
@jorgi6335
@jorgi6335 Ай бұрын
@@teac117 Huh, fascinating! Where are you from in China? Are you from the countryside or the city? Yes, Norway is quite rural country compared to most other countries. So we do still have some of the more traditional ways of living in Norway. But, on the other hand, all aspects of society have changed, especially with rapidly increased, socioeconomic differences between people; partially toxic technologies from the Silicon Valley; racism, chauvinism, and xenophobia etc. but there’s still more collective feeling and belonging on the Norwegian countryside than what you get in our cities, at least the capital, Oslo, which is highly individualistic, careerist and snobby (where I’ve grown up). But it’s strange to hear that you think that neither socialism nor nationalism (or patriotism) is strong in China. What do you learn in school for example? In the Chinese educational system, don’t you learn about the great Socialists of the past and China’s socialist present and communist future?

I would think that they could see a bottleneck in their career development in the US. Safety and respect (the lack of) might be other factors for Chinese Americans too. The other possible factor could be a patriotic heart.

"Why would they do that?" Bill Gates himself answered that question 20 years ago when he was interviewed by Tom Friedman: "The best research at Microsoft, in terms of the quality of research papers, is being done in Shanghai." Even back then, when China wasn't quite as far along in computer science and AI, they had talented and very productive engineers and computer scientists. Gates goes on to explain his successes finding talent in China. Hence Microsoft setting up its Asia labs in Shanghai. The executives are mining that same talent--only, now, it won't be for Microsoft.

Stacking up chips and using parallel programming solves the issue. For those who understand, do you remember when we were buying the most advanced chips? What was the criteria? Gigaherz. Now the tech went arounfd the Giga-herz criteria and we're talking about cores. Same thing in China.

@@dons6556 Many Chinese people flew, swam across the ocean and ended up in the land of America. Their decendents became half Chinese and half American. With his yellow skin, he could fool many local white Americans thinking that he must be an expert, while selling his own heritage out and make money for his living. These kind of fake American, fake Chinese people - I have seen a lot. They often fooled their American CEOs and flex over to China and "rule" the MNC while perceived as "expert in China" while people like us, I am not even a citizen in China, I need a work permit to work here but being here for 20 years, I cannot even claim to be an expert in China!. Anyway, these people, in my mind, are the scarvengers, maggots in our society, who prey on the ones who are not wise enough to see thru the BS from that. That is what Gordan Chang is about. He probably has not even been to Xinjiang and Tibet and started to make comments about those places. Just becoz he could speak with a fancy American accent (still fairly Chinese if u ask me, probably can't even play in the NBA or American Football team to really claim himself as an "American", so the only way he could survive is to betray his heritage as a yellow skin person. The only reason why he still has a job, is because of his mum and dad who gave him that skin colour, a heritage that he is actively betraying. How disgusting it is. The sad thing is, many westerners believe him, so naive and uneducated. Those who believe his lies also prove to be unworthy to govern. Cannot even tell the differences between facts and lies. Just politics nowadays in the land of America. So sad to see how it all end after WW2. It is a great disappoint to see the once Superman USA, becoming the Homelander USA. For many of us - sheer disappointment becoz at one point, we loved America and looked up to them a lot. That trust is now totally gone. I don't know how America can fix its image again.
