To say that this is a "Good Movie" is a gross understatement. It's an excellent example of the genre made during this period ....THIS is what is real ACTING. The dialog flows.....the background 🎶 music is part of the story and interwoven with the what is happening. This is a lost art unfortunately.

My dad was in the Air Force and in 1956 he was transferred to Ladd and we were there till 1959. We were there when Alaska became a state. Seeing those men in their parkas brought back memories of my dad all bundled up. The Air Force issued enough cold weather gear that they had a rule that if anyone got frostbite they would lose a stripe. We were there when Sputnik flew over and we watched it fly slowly across the night sky. The aurora borealis was the best thing of all. I have a lot of memories of Alaska and this movie helped remind me.

Just came across this little gem, as a Dale Robertson fan. What a small world: My Dad was a WWII combat pilot (B-17s) - did 2 tours in AK flying C-47s (Goonie Birds as they were called). I was born at Ladd AFB in 1956, and we moved back down to Colorado when I was 2. I grew up hearing about his flying in the worst conditions imaginable - flying everything from medical supplies, food, etc to inaccessible regions. He loved the indescribable beauty and ruggedness, and especially moose hunting. Countless high quality Kodachrome slides of the adventures which I still have. I returned to AK many years later during my own military career; spent a week of liberty with the USS Nimitz docked in Anchorage - I flew F-14s … and the Nimitz spent 6 weeks deployed in the Northern Pacific, around the Aleutian Islands. Some of the most beautiful scenery from the air along the AK coastline. Amazing country !

My dad was in the Air Force. We lived on the base at housing called Cherry Hill. I loved it. Two ways out of Anchorage, east or west. We left there in 1960. 🙃
@ruthmaryrose

@@texxxasron Ladd AFB was at Fairbanks. We never went to Anchorage but if you left Alaska in 1960 then our time in Alaska must have overlapped somewhat. I was 8-11 years old when we were there. My dad’s next assignment was at Salina, KS. When one of the kids there found out I had lived in Alaska he asked me if I had lived in an igloo! 😂 I guess it’s interesting to have memories from many different places, but I did always wish we could have lived close to my grandparents and other relatives. I feel like I missed something important. 😔

My maiden name was was Robertson. My daddy was Thomas Lorenzo Roberson and he was born in Indian territory in around 1896 or 97. He died just a few months before his 100th birthday. I have a 96 year old brother still living, in Utah. His wife is 97 or 98. Daddy was part Sioux American Indian. He had black curly hair and bright blue eyes. His hair was still black and curly when he died. He was the oldest of seven sons. He had no sisters. He named me Winona which means first born daughter in the Sioux Native American language, although I’m not his first born daughter. He had three daughters older that I, and one 7 years younger than me. I’m 78 years old and my brother and I are the only two of daddies kids still living.

Dale, as with notable actors stands out from the crowd. Where some actors become various characters in a role. Dale is one personality you enjoy for who he is. What ever that might be. Like an old friend or favorite uncle. You just enjoy his unique looks, low voice with his distinct accent that's always welcome in the neighborhood. Dale, for who we see. Never fit one role we must agree comfortably. And that is anything less than the hero in the story. Great entertainment in a time in the birth of television.

Wow, C-47s, an F-82, a glider, and another small single engine plane. A good film for an old Air Force brat. I enjoyed seeing Frank Lovejoy, and Dale Robertson. It was a pretty neat mid 50's movie. In the very first scene neither Dale R., or Paul Fix were wearing their pilots wings. Both out of uniform. Thanks for posting a fairly adventurous flick Mr. Classic Robb. Great movie. My interest in these old ones is to know the year I was born (1954) and not only for the acting and the story. Is for the technology as well, as I saw the Motorola Walky-Talky, beginning of modern personal communication, the B-17, P-82, B-36 and C-47 aircraft still flying and relevant, the dawn of jet aircraft, 9 years since World War II ended. Dad was stationed at Ladd from 52 to late 54. Met Mom there and along came me. Dad was a young A/C mechanic and crewed B29s and had some contact with the F-82s which were being decommissioned at the time. I was stationed at Ft. Richardson in Anchorage in the 70s and got up to Ft. Wainright (formerly Ladd AFB). It was interesting for me to see, in the movie, a little of what the base looked like when I was born. The stories I remember didn't sound like a place like the Klondike Club would have been likely.

@@ClassicRobbEvelynKeyes Great movie too. Light aircraft with skis and icing problem, real solutions used, B-17 rescue aircraft flying the parallel search pattern , F-82 Twin Mustangs, Waco glider, Glider pickup, Glider jerry rig repair with skis, Personnel recovery system using glider type pick up, C-47's. All actually used in remote locations. One for the aircraft buffs. The Fulton recovery system was used at the end of one of 007's movies with a B-17 too and also in the Green Berets with a C-130 using the Y yoke on the nose to snag the balloon cable. Having flown gliders as a cadet and later, as adult, with winch tows, aero tow, i can tell you the sudden pull by the winch or aircraft is a thrill. Lol Flying powered aircraft is great too. I also have parachute experience so when they abandon the C-47 i can imagine what goes through their minds. I am a very keen military and civilian survival adherent too, so the landing on the ice also touches my experiences. This movie is one of my favourite, along with Islands in the Sky with John Wayne another survival movie in the arctic. There are also some very good vintage USAF winter, desert, jungle survival movies on YT. The lessons are still valid today. I have great and deep respect for the aircrew, glider crews, and paratroops who served, suffered and many died for our freedoms. A special one for the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry special troops in ww2 at Pegasus Bridge. My great grandfather and grandfather served with them in ww1 and later.

How does anyone get "better use" out of an eight hundred BILLION Dollar annual military budget, much of which is pocketed as pure profit by the people in the arms industry ? The U.S. National Debt is now $35 Trillion dollars [it took some 200 years to reach ONE Trillion and is now increasing by another Trillion every hundred days]. The size of the debt is matched by the shrinking value of the fiat currency in your pocket.

It is with pride that I enjoyed this fine film. My stepdad, Maj. Richard Stafford, was one of the AAF's youngest B17 pilots who survived 35 missions over Europe & he was a Quaker. My wife's grandad, Col. Ed Zavalick, was a C47 pilot who flew many missions over the Himalayas. All those young men knew fully the risk they faced every time they started their engines, yet they put their lives on the line to defeat racist, fascist dictators. Now we must fight treasonous, fascist stupidity in our nation's capital. I pray our republic survives the current crop of deceitful, braindead, spawn of QAnon fascists each & every day.

Good movie that really needed to be filmed in color. Not much cigarette use depicted considering the time it was produced. Seems like any stress is time for a drink. Continuity of the island size keeps changing from the model to actual film. Many vintage aircraft are shown and the types of rescues that can be used. I'm not sure they ever explained what they were sent there to observe and naming an ice flow as an island seemed bizarre. It was normal for two aircraft to go on an extended mission as shown. At the time this was filmed the Coast Guard had at least two Icebreakers in service but then this was an Air Force Project.
