Really enjoyed the movie. Being an aircraft fanatic with family members being in USAAF and USAF(inc myself) these movies are always a treat. I do smile though at certain things like trying to duplcate the sound of a rotary(not radial) engine and they always manage to have an all red German fighter in at least one scene.

It was interesting to see Ray Mill. in a self-sacrificing role to play noble caretaker to excitement junkie Fred Mc.'s, left behind wife and baby daughter. Pretty decent film with good audio, and not too bad visual. Good story of the early, early days of aviation. Got to see Andy Devine in a major role. Hard to find a voice like his any where else. Pilot Paul Mantz, who staged this film's flying sequences for director William Wellman, once complained to a screenwriter friend that he kept seeing scripts which 'borrowed' significantly from one another. "What you writers need", Mantz reportedly opined, "is a brand-new cliche!"

At 1:00:46 movie script has someone named Reid landing in Portugal to complete the 'first transatlantic flight'; of course, it was Alcock and Brown in 1919(in a Vickers Vimy) who first crossed the Atlantic non-stop, and then in 1927 Lindbergh made the first solo crossing.

One point , these fly boy adrenaline junkies belonged in an asylum. Buzzing airfields making real soldiers duck or hit the ground for their wn amusement was a complete joke and an indictment of the stupidity and unprofessionalism of the US Aircorps. What a group of amateurs and so many enjoyable movies from the 1930 s hilites that's amateurism. Pearl Harbour , the Phillipines , the US government and Dugout Doug are proof of that we are are the greatest and can't learn anything from anyone else despite the fact they were professionals and the US were just a joke. The Military killed alot of their own before they replaced dunces and learned something from others.

Alot of these people were not just pioneers but adrenaline junkies doing stupid things to make a fortune quickly and the thought of family or kids was secondary. So many ex WW1 fliers doing barn storming , taking enormous risks all for money and fame. A note Virginia Wiedler was excellent , a fine child and teenager actress who passed way before her time. Sorry. If I were 30 years younger, this film would be excellent fun. Even if it were possible to suspend belief, as this movie is technically and story very good. But now ar 82 years old cynical thoughts of greed, manipulation, and exploration by the "military-industrial-banking" cartels is just exposure of their crimes against humanity. Oh, to be innocent, to believe in a world honest, sincere, kind people. There are still far too few nice people, but now corruption and hypocrisy are so obvious that an honest person just wants to die and give up...because if the "fallen ones" start World War Three life will not be worth living. The horror will be unspeakable. The acting is good. The film has little fault, but me a disillusioned broken-hearted sick old man who thinks he can see deception of hurtful inventions to kill people in war, not just for speedy transportation...😢 !
