thats so true; real enthusiast collect watches they loves and the price doesn't matter, there is so much good watches in the low price range but i guess this mindset come from the polluted market, i mean you cannot really go wrong with a 10k watch, but you can have a piece of junk or a really good one for 200-500
@spliffnotes83593 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I don't know where they get the arrogance. Every real watch lover respects great watches that THEY like at any price point. Hell, even Producer Michael who has the most extravagant taste on KZbin had a recent video wearing a cheap watch he found at like a gas station because he thought it looked cool. Let people collect what THEY like/can afford /appreciate.
@Shooterpirat3 жыл бұрын
Good point and I mostly agree. Collecting watches and owning a luxury product are two different things though. They often times meet, when we are represented with watch content here on youtube. There are so many good watches in the "lower" price range (even Quarz ones, I dare to say). Having an luxury item means to have something that is expensive and hard to get (and useless too). So when you want a luxury time piece, a couple hundred are not gonna cut it. I think that most people dont realise that there is a subtle difference between watch collecting and a luxury watch / luxury watch collecting.

Clepsydra: literally "thief of water" in Greek. The word is used now for the common hourglass although sand instead of water was used centuries later. Back in the day clear glass was not available and the clepsydres were made of pottery. So one would examine the water remaining in the pot (some had figures of Gods appearing as markers) and as the water would drain away the device was named "thief of water".

Only liking x watch brand, type, or only liking watches above a certain price point - For instance, "Only Rolex makes the best watches", or "Anything under 5k is trash". 2. Great video! Journalistic standards have been in freefall for years in printed media and TV across the board. And it's not just the general media, in my own field very few of those writing in specialist journals have any understanding of subject material and instead just regurgitate what they're spoon-fed by corporations, advertizers, NGOs and others pushing agendas. I sometimes see articles in journals and can have a pretty good idea who actually wrote it from the syntax (and it wasn't the journalist). One of my pet watch hates is fake heritage stories and some of the lies which seem to be accepted at face value.

Something to point out about so called "women's watches" is that I expect brands are under the impression that yes, any watches can be worn by anyone who likes them, but that the women who are interested in the watches they market normally are already able to buy them. The more 'girly' watches with the stones and the pink etc are specifically to capitalise on the market of women who aren't ALREADY buying their watches. It seems like a stereotype because it is only targeting a specific type of female customer - any women who want to buy a Daytona or Explorer are already being marketed to in the usual course of advertising. Not to mention that if catering to that stereotype didn't turn a profit, it wouldn't keep happening.

How I wish you could do a collaboration on making your own watches too, re writing history for the next generation on how a watch should be; like surviving this pandemic etc... And maybe you could invite and join-in one more from the perspective of a real buyer who is about to buy his or her first watch or as a gift, something like that.

Re: one perfect watch: I had an Explorer 1016 purchased new in 1986 as my only watch for about 10 years. Then I divorced and remarried a lady into jewelry. Honeymooned in the Caribbean and came home with a mid-size Omega 300 (pre-Bond black dial). My perfect watch was no longer perfect because i then had a choice. From there it spiraled to a Breitling, Maurice -Lacroix, etc. The moral of the story: sometimes perfection is partially driven by choice. Good video. Keep at it!

Every single one of them had perfect second hand alignment. My 5 Casios also have that perfect registration. I bought a couple of Chinese watches for about $50.00. Each one had Sapphire crystal. Hi TGV, I discovered youre chanel recently, i'm from Canada Québec (french), I love watching your chanel, your style full of respect, your authenticity, your way of thinking and your outlook on things. A little comment on the sapphire crystal, I admit that it is difficult to understand a watch at 300$ or 400$ CAD that does not offer it, when there are watches on the market for less than $ 100 CAD that offer it. Last month I bought the Pagani Design 1639 Submariner homage watch. Ok this is a China made watch but the specs are really amazing. Saphire glass Case back exibition 10atm 316l stainless steel seikoNH35 movement I really like the Blue sunburst dial After 3 weeks of use, it only lost 17 sec In short for 65$ USD it's my by far less expressive watch and I really love it 😊 I must say that I was struggling with the NTH Näcken - Vintage Black, but it missed the crown guard, and i really wanted a back exibition case for that watch. I practice sports and very physical activities and I have broken the glasses of other watches a few times, which is why now it is only sapphire. The only one I have that is not made of sapphire is my G-SHOK GSG-100-1A3 (MASTER OF G MUDMASTER) And I managed to scratch it, after 6 months 😅 Keep up the good work !! And happy new year 2021! The case and bezel have some scratches and dings as well. If the crystal takes enough damage, then I'll replace with sapphire, NBD. To me, it's part my watch's personal story, much like a journal or diary. Great vid guys and yes legibility is the most crucial thing. i modded a watch to change out polished steel hands for white hands. which turned out great because now it looks amazing and is more legible. The best part is that this watch is already super rare and hard to find in good shape now with this killer mod it's a one of kinda piece :) used hands from a Seiko to put on an Orient hehe. My friend bought me a watch for my birthday and we had to exchange it for another because it was matt black hands on a matte black dial. the new one is more legible but what's funny is that the matt steel seconds hand is more legible than the polished hour and minute hand lol

a pet peeve of mine is that your videos with mark arent in a playlist lol but in seriousness my biggest pet peeve is how many watch companies do not keep reliable archives of their vintage or older pieces, i have to go on a long dive through the internet for weeks at a time looking up the original advertisements or catalogues to track down any info on my watches and sometimes have to go by on forums that dont provide sources. You would think that a company could keep an archive and design specs etc of their watches but it all gets lost in the rabbit hole i suppose. a few companies have archives open but sometimes ill get lucky and somebody has a pdf manual of the watch, but for a few of my "rarer" pieces its all speculation on their background. favorite watch: 1970s Towncraft skin diver black dial, vinyl crystal and painted on numerals. I am yet to come across another photograph of it besides the original sellers photos and my own on reddit lol.

When people who are outside of the hobby swear only Rolex second hands sweeps!?!?
@Andrew.W754 жыл бұрын
Ha yes a long time ago a guy I knew showed me his Rolex day date, he told me that Rolex was the only brand that had a sweeping seconds hand. At the time I wasn't into watches so didn't question it!

I’ve never heard that before. How do these people get that information, like who started this weird lie?
@Beechhill3 жыл бұрын
In my childhood I heard/learned that you could tell a *fake* Rolex by its ticking second hand, ie it had a quartz movement. So maybe this led to "only Rolex's sweep"? Don't forget, that during the quartz crisis, mechanical movements in the greater public were considered obsolete and silly, except for luxury watches - which again in the greater public literally means Rolex.

I like big watches because I have a big wrist, my wrist is 8 inches and most bracelets I have to buy extra extensions for to make fit, most NATO straps I'm at the last couple holes. I still only wear watches up to the mid 40s but I'd love for you to review or show more watches that are large. Also on the whole sapphire necessary thing, I work with my hands for a living and mineral crystals scratch too easy (especially if you with with any abrasives like aluminum oxide) so while someone that does office work may never see the necessity for it I do. I bought a crystal press and have replaced several of my beater watch crystals with sapphire and then they don't scratch anymore I'm planning on buying an Islander for my next daily beater ( don't take that offensively ) once it's back in stock. I think the brand offers so much value that I think I'll save money rather than having to replace parts or upgrade to keep a watch going

I have the same problem. I get lucky sometimes when I get a strap or bracelet and they happen to fit nice. Most of the time, especially with straps, one hole is too tight or one is too loose. It annoys me the strap companies like Colareb, place the holes SO far apart! Just how my wrist is I guess. Congrats on the Seiko Spring Drive Marc!! Cheers T!

Hey guys! Great video, always fun to watch you guys interact. A comment regarding TGV's point about marketing to men and women. As a man, I don't get offended when Invicta or Casio advertise to me some of their absurd, over the top watches, because they are masculine. Why would women get upset after seeing a pink watch? Reasonable people probably just ignore these marketing tropes and go for a moderate choice that they like without making a fuss out of it. Otherwise, that's just going through life deliberately looking for things to be offended by. Same for "boyfriend watches". No-one is saying that women can't afford buying something like this, it's just that they mostly don't care. Let's be real - men are vastly more interested in this hobby. This is no secret, TGV even you discussed this in the past when answering questions like "how to get my significant other into watches". Therefore, seeing a girl with an interesting piece and making a "boyfriend watch" assumption may not always be accurate, but it's not something unreasonable to think, and again, nothing to be offended by. I wrote this with all due respect. Love your videos and wish you happy holidays!

The bracelets on the SARB033 and 035 are the only watches I've owned where I was unable to get the right fit. I'm not the only person either. I've seen multiple posts online that say the same thing. Thankfully, Uncle Seiko makes ones that fit great.

In regards to the “desk diver” issue, the reason I buy mainly ISO certified dive watches is because they’re so much more robust than regular watches. They can really take a beating, I don’t have to worry about water resistance, and when I go diving like once every ten years I have the watch for it! Plus I love the look of dive watches! Also, everyone’s house is filled with shit that’s completely over engineered for their purposes. Why do you need a car that does 200 miles an hour when the speed limit is 88? Why do you need a car stereo that will blow your eardrums out when you never listen to music at that volume level, why do you need a stove that goes to 600 degrees when you never need that temperature? Why do you need 20 pairs of shoes, trousers, 50 t-shirts, 30 hoodies and 20 pair of socks! Why don’t you just move back into a cave because who “needs”apartments and houses anyway?! We’ve been living in caves for hundreds of thousands of years. And the list goes on and on and on! But how dare your watch is water resistant to 300 meters and has a helium escape valve when you’re not a saturation diver?! That’s where they draw the line! It drives me up the wall!

I think Citizen are on to a winner if they keep mark their ISO promasters for a reasonable price ( automatic & quartz). I didn't even bother looking elsewhere after seeing the price & the watch.

Do watches that aren't ISO certified have the word "divers" or "professional" on the dial?
@pacovl464 жыл бұрын
@@ΠαῦλοςΠαυλίδης-χ7θ normally no. That’s the point, if you want to put the word diver on your dial or the case the watch has to be ISO certified. I don’t know about word professional.

Marc is right! Having worn out 2 Seiko SKXs and a Monster over 20 years, I was unprepared for OCD to kick in big-time when my wife and daughters chipped in and gave me a very handsome Citizen Promaster Diver BN0151-09L for my birthday. While extremely happy with the looks, design, fit, finish, comfort and quality of the watch (once I got it off the fairly hideous strap onto a bracelet), I was unprepared for the distress that overcame me because the second hand landed between the marks of the minute track on the quartz tick of each and every second! Ahhh! it was simply killing me. As the first few weeks past, my tick obsession reaction only got worse making me wince every time I glanced at the watch on my wrist. That's the bad news... The good news is that I was driven by the OCD anguish to purchase a case back removal tool, a pair of fine tweezers, a cheap plastic movement holder and a 5x loupe. After some reading and KZbin study, I was able to successfully remove and reset the hands so that now the second hand is bang on with every tick. In the end its all good and I even learned something in the process.

Really enjoy your collaborative videos where you have a good schmooze. Obvious that you guys are friends! Major pet peeve for me is a non-visible date. Why don’t more manufacturers use a cyclops? With all the manufacturers out there, IMHO, Seiko is the only one that makes a legible date w/o the cyclops. Sometimes, it seems like the watch designers out there, only look at their phones to actually tell the time! Another pet peeve are the consumers that only wear the higher-end pedigree. I love my Seiko and Orients as much as my grails. To me, the fun is wearing what floats my boat that morning. Sometimes (although rarely in the pandemic) I need a dressier watch. I mostly wear casual watches these days. Nice to have a Chrono when I flip my steak on the grill. Love a nice GMT fir travel. Will only wear a screw down crown if I am by the pool. Short of someone coming up with an automatic GMT Chronograph with an uncluttered dual, refined ceramic bezel, domed saohire crystal and date magnifier in a 39mm diameter 12mm or less in height. with great visibility in a variety of finishes,

Mark, I think the comment about Seiko prices going up referred to their ever-increasing MSRPs on new releases, not to Seiko coming down on deeply discounted existing references.
