This is fantastic! I'm leaning toward using this for our homeschool, and this video was super helpful!

Very helpful explanation of SOTW. I’ve skimmed a few other videos for this curriculum but yours by far gave the most thorough review!

I like SOTW because one lesson can be taught to all the kids at the same time.

We did story of the world a few years ago and bought all the volumes. My oldest reads them just for fun ;) Since we have moved to a more unit study approach, we select chapters as they fit in what we are studying!

That versatility! Love it! We are doing America’s Story 1 because I’m teaching it at co-op but throughout the week we are using SOTW to fill in the world history part.

It’s great even if you just use it as a read aloud alongside a history curriculum you’re already using

I haven't watched this yet but do you address why you chose SOTW over Mystery of History? I am looking in to both of these for next year as I want to start a formal history curriculum for my oldest two next year (they will be 5th & 7th). I've been watching SOTW reviews today and I LOVE the ease of use this curriculum seems to provide. It seems very straightforward and easy to implement, which is exactly what I want/need as I also have two littles in the mix. MOH has a Biblical worldview which I appreciate. I admire your faith & appreciate your book choices because I know they are safe for my kids, so your opinion on this will help me in making my decision. SOTW just looks easier to manage but I always tend to go for Biblical worldview with curriculum if I can. Help! :)

At one point I attempted using both MOH and SOTW together. I found that MOH was a little too much for my kids’ attention spans. And while I also love the Christian history perspective in MOH, I actually really liked the conversations that came from the exposure of differing beliefs in SOTW. I also have found that while SOTW is considered a more secular curriculum, it is written from a young earth view with quite a bit of Christian leaning and influence which I like. That way it gives us the ability to see for ourselves how God worked despite how much sin infiltrated so much History. It has always been a conclusion my kids have been able to draw without being told it in a curriculum and I like that. I think it truly comes down to each family and personally preference for curriculum. I love that we are so blessed to have the choice and wish you the best in choosing what is best for you guys! You’ll have to keep me updated on what you guys choose and how you like it 💜

@@PenniesAndSalt thank you Megan! This is very helpful! Seeing God work despite all the sin is important to me so I love that your kids have drawn those conclusions with SOTW.

We are liking Sonlight B so far. It’s what I read during lunchtime now. 😀 It took a little while for me to find the best time to do it, but its working fine now. It’s just so expensive. 😳

Yes! I almost did Sonlight last year but just couldn’t with the cost and having to buy math and reading for so many kids. I love that SOTW offers the literature suggestions and I use the Sonlight reading lists to help pick out read alouds for history as well.

I noticed this is the newer version. Would you say it is better to buy the newest ones? Lots of older edtions for sale used but haven't seen this one probably since it is so new. But wasn't sure if the update is worth the buy new price.

Thanks for your review! Do you feel this can be good to do just reading the book alone without the activities? My kids are younger and we already have quite a bit in our curriculum and I don’t want too long and too much going on.....what are your thoughts?

My kids were not at compatible ages with their family cycle. It was too much for me to complete multiple levels of MFW at the same time. I attempted it but in an effort to simplify, I decided to do family subjects for science, history, and bible, then separate for math and reading 😉

My kids are 5th, 3rd, 1st, and k. Posted a video today of me doing a lesson with them using this curriculum so you might find it helpful in your decision. I basically just give my younger ones more prompts and help the along with things that might be too difficult on their own. However, they constantly surprise me with how much they soak up.

@@PenniesAndSalt ooohhh. So do you think it’s worth it to go with MFW (if you’re really only looking for a history, maybe geography, curriculum? Like is there a lot of extra stuff in MFW to justify the price (it’s quite a bit more!)

I was leaning toward starting Story of the World before the pandemic happened because I was planning on buying the books we needed when we visited the US...but since we weren't able to go back...we are repeating a volume of Mystery of History that we already owned, the 13 year old had done it before but the 9 year old hadn't. I like Mystery of History but sometimes I just like reading history from a different perspective because everyone writes it a little bit differently. This does look really cool!

Last year I planned to do a mixture of MOH with SOTW. I found a really neat blog post that broke down chapter by chapter of how to mix the two. I ended up dropping MOH though. It was just too much for my younger kiddos and the activities and everything in SOTW just engaged them more. Also, I should have added... SOTW is a “secular” curriculum but it includes biblical history and is written from a young earth perspective so it leans a little more to the biblical view of things even though it’s written through a secular lens.

So my son will be in 5th grade this coming year. If we do a book a year, he'll be done when hes in 8th. Are these books too young for 8th grade?

The last vol. is intended for grades 4-8. so that would definitely work for 8th grade.
