useful video for novices. If your a bloke doing indoor rowing or an ERG , going topless is the only way, a tshirt is far too restrictive.

In heat, you're right - but usually, in a gym (not a rowing club gym) situation - topless rowing is frowned upon.
@garethforster26473 жыл бұрын
@@rowalong aww totally agree mate, never in a gym but I'm thinking more specifically a rowing club. I was in a university boat club where it was always the acceptable and even expected norm that the Lads would go topless particularly if you were doing an ERG.

Haha love the Kilt. I row I home so I’m usually in sport bra and tight shorts and mesh sneakers. I recently gave up the glove. I don’t that low/medium impact sport bras without wire work best, I tried rowing in a tank that had a built in bra, but that was not supportive enough. For longer rows I wear a light scarf around my head for sweat. Once I went for a quick row in just underwear. I don’t not recommend that
@rowalong3 жыл бұрын
Haha, I don't think I'll be rowing in just my underwear any time soon either... If only because I like to feel how I'm meant to feel. If I race in shorts and a T - I train in shorts and a T...

I wear running shorts and some cheap, soft sneakers without socks. The sneakers are made with a mesh, so they breathe well. I row topless, at my home (I am a man, of course). Just a HR monitor band. Since the saddle is not too comfortable, I use a pad made from a folded towel. And it works for me. Thank you for advices! I am going to have a workout today after the break from everyday rowing 10k+ in March. It was not exhausting, but another month of this would become hard... So I return to rowing each other day and cycling cardio between.
@rowalong3 жыл бұрын
Ah, and the folded towel will soak up any sweat that runs down your body. If we get a good enough summer in Glasgow, and I row some sessions without a shirt on, I'll try a towerl underneath....

Had the same thought as Chris Barrow. But the 12 minutes soon went by. I am a heavy sweat guy, so no shoes and socks for. Me.Good enough for Eric Murray, works for me too. Might try sweat bands, although never worn them before. Cheers for all the videos

I'm more surprised at how long the section about Gloves was. I guess like I said, a whole video could be made about them. Socks/barefeet is a great way to row. I do prefer the comfort of socks vs barefoot though. I know there's not much in it - but that layer of cotton is just enough to stop the rubbing of the strap and the ridged footplate.

I wore bib shorts once, i didn’t notice it during, but chafing made cycling hard the day after: no cycling bibs. Cycling gloves are good for me if I don’t row regularly.

Yeah, it's that point right at the top of the inseam that gets me. I don't feel it when rowing, but afterwards....

Personally I do not like gloves at all, especially if u saw, u should loosen ur grip on the handle and u pull more on the finger tip side. If Im rowing more than 15-30k i prefer to put 3 layers of Leukoplast tape/bandage, it helps a lot around the fingerjoints, even tho I am quite used to rowing.

Do you go full bib with shoulder straps too? I find it’s way too constricting.

Yes. As long as they’re open enough for heat to escape, and don’t rub at the point where the handle connects!

The most comfortable for me is a cycling skinsuit, except that the seam is right below my jelly roll, magnifying it at the catch.

Is there anything 'specific' about cycling socks? All the cycling socks I have are really light and thin - I'd not fancy rowing in them.

Are rowing and cycling training complementery? I row 3 alternate days and indoor cycle with my road bike on a trainer inbetween and a long walk on sunday. Are these exercises interfering with each other?
@pokrec3 жыл бұрын
I do almost exactly the same, except walking on the day-off. Depends on what you want to achieve - if the main goal is health - it is great. I even watched a film about olympic rowing champions and their training regime and besides of rowing (main activity), they do cycling, skiing in winter, running and weighlifting. So, I think you are on a right path. Rowing serious workouts everyday is possible, but not as a long-term project. I rowed a month of 10k+ workouts and I feel, that until some point it boosts your fitness significantly, but after a month you will probably suffer from insufficient regeneration and it is the time to step back a bit with rowing workouts.

Thanks I read that cycling develops "hard" muscles but I couldn't find anything about rowing. Body is holding up so far no aches or strains. Do 40 -60 mins in morning and 20-30 in the evening. My rower is cheap rubbish but I keep the resistance above 50% and follow the pace of various youtube videos between 16 - 26 spm. Thanks for the info. BTY Iam 75.
@rowalong3 жыл бұрын
I certainly think I was able to put up with the 'Top End' of my rows a lot better when I was still cycling in and out to work. Although I've got my bike on the trainer and do Zwift, it's not quite the same as being on the road, chasing from traffic light to light - trying to make the sequence. I'm sure the intensity I worked at on the road was a lot more - and therefore fed nicely into the rowing side of things. And it has to said, anything that builds your aerobic capacity is going to benefit you, regardless of whether there's a difference in muscles for cycling/rowing.

#kilt THX for your thoughts. Btw. as u mentioned your 500, 1/2/5 k Training videos. Do you have a specific recommendation for rowing a 10k? Stroke rate wise, speed, sections, in between sprints, starting fast ending slow or vice versa or ... . Not really found anythig so far. Thx in advance and happy Easter. (What about rowing in a rabbit costume - your thoughts? :-)
@rowalong3 жыл бұрын
Sadly, I had to work all weekend, so the bunny costume will have to wait until next year.... ;-) As for the 10K - I row them much like a 5K. The first 8K are at hard tempo effort. Say around 2K+10 and at 26-28spm - then I start to tighten up the pace and rate over the next 2K so that I'll end up in that anaerobic place for the last 500m, trying to finish around 2K+8 if possible. I've not done a 10K at full pelt in a long time though. Maybe time to dust off and re-assess how I row them!

Not considered rowing in a kilt ! Certainly calls for extensive Risk Assessment analysis prior to undergoing such a potentially foolhardy venture ;-) I tend to row in socks (colder weather) and bare feet in Summer. I sweat a ridiculous amount (squash matches usually require 3 t-shirt changes!), so during rowing, when it's warm, I generally go topless AND have a floor fan going - and it's not as though the NE coast of UK is known for being particularly scorching! I've never understood how the guys or girls can wear anything on their heads during sessions, i.e. base ball caps and so on. Shane Farmer, of BlackHorseRowing, always has his hat on .... baffles me! Although maybe it's an American thing? Also find I have to wear quite long wristbands in the warmer weather, as tend to lose the grip on the handle. Tried the gloves in the past, but prefer not to wear them now, but risk slipping if not prepared. Strangely, of all the sports shorts and undergarments I wear for squash/running etc. When rowing, it's basic run of the mill boxers, and a pair of old shorts with no 'sewn in' inners. Compression shorts and shorts with inners just cause chafing. Good article, and be interested to read other rowers preferences :-)

Good to hear from a fellow sweater. In my squash playging days, I'd be ok for the first couple of sets, but I'd certainly need to change after the second. Then if it went to 5, I'd end up needing to change after every game. And if playing a tournament weekend.... ugh!! Glad you enjoyed the video. I think the hardest thing is sweat control though. Once the radiator bursts, and I start to overflow, it's really tricky to keep my hands dry and it gets uncomfortable. That loose / open grip is the only thing that keeps me connected!!
