Omar Shariff is one of the most cherished dramatic actors (Dr. Zhavago) and just having him in this movie is an awesome thing. The directors/writers did the same by bringing on serious actors Peter Graves, Robert Stack and Lloyd Bridges for Airplane! In addition to Omar Shariff, Hillary and the blind salesman were both in the London and Broadway 8 1/2 hour adaptation of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, also serious roles. And finally, the German officer who asks for Nick's papers on the train had played Dim, one of the droogs in A Clockwork Orange. It's refreshing to see former serious actors letting it all hang out in a comedy.

The Swedish Book Shop scene is, in my opinion, the greatest scene. The dialogue was shot normally but sequentially reversed as they shot the scene backward so Val Kilmer had to catch those books out of the book case naturally such that it looks like him throwing it into the book case when run normally. It is also why it is called the Swedish Book Shop because people's attempt at making backward speak sounds phonetically like 'Swedish' even though it really doesn't. It just shows how far ZAZ will go for a gag.

This is one of their lesser known movies because it's kind of obtuse (It's a spoof of Elvis movies... but it's also a Cold War spy thriller...but the East German communists are Nazis and the heroes' allies are WWII French resistance...but then it's also The Blue Lagoon?) It is my favorite because it does have some of the most creative comedic film-making ever - the backwards scene and the underwater fight are just so off the wall and unexpected and require so much ingenuity and are low-tech and hi-tech at the same time... Now you guys have to see "Kentucky Fried Movie" and "Amazon Women on The Moon" which are both made up of sketches and shorts. KFM spoofs *ALL* of schlocky 70's grindhouse movies (Including THE BEST EVER spoof of Bruce Lee's "Enter The Dragon") and AWOTM spoofs the experience of late-night cable channel-surfing in the 80's

I'm not sure if anyone mention this, but Top Secret isn't a Spy Parody, but a Multi-genre Parody movie. The first scene; we are parody not only music like The Beach Boys, but the whole of the Beach Teen movies of the 60s. The movie is also doing a parody of Elvis Presley movies. One of the reasons why they rewrite 'Love Me Tonight' into a Marcy Ad. Kilmer also does his best Elvis during that scene. The overall theme is 50s and 60s War movies, as well as the whole spy parody. The scene of the island; is taken from the Brooke Shields movie, The Blue Lagoon. So you see; this isn't only one type of parody, like movie like Airplane, which parodies the Airport and Disaster films of the 70s. No; this parodies many movies types. All of it very clearly written; even the dumb jokes pay off big. Between this, and Real Genius. really put Val Kilmer on the map. Also; Kilmer did all the singing himself. The soundtrack is actually under his character's name of Nick Rivers, but it's all Val.
