One of the great British engineering projects of the 20th Century is completely hidden from view, traversing hundreds of miles across the country. There’s no trace of it except for a series of small holes on the tarmacs of the UK’s major airports, including London Heathrow.
What lies beneath is a fuel network of colossal scale - one which carries aviation fuel from the refineries where it’s unloaded straight to the aircraft waiting to be topped up.
This is how it was during WW2 and to stop the enemy from bombing our fuel reserves the government decided to burying our fuel tanks and pipes underground.
It was created not with flights to far-flung destinations in mind, but the very survival of the UK. And the exact location of the network is still not publicly known.
The origins of this underground network date back to before World War Two. A secret pipeline was built between Liverpool’s Stanlow Refinery all the way to Bristol’s Avonmouth Docks and then fed into national road and rail distribution networks.
In September 1939, war broke out, and the need for a protected network became more pressing. As the war progressed and Germany occupied Holland, Belgium and France, Britain became more vulnerable to enemy bombers. There was also the need to send fuel from the western ports through to the airfields in the east of the UK.
But sending it via the roads and rail made the precious fuel far too vulnerable to aerial attack. The solution was to bury a pipeline - safe from enemy bombers.
The project - the Government Pipelines and Storage System (GPSS) - was carried out with the utmost secrecy; the pipeline channels were even dug at night so that enemy reconnaissance aircraft couldn’t see any interesting activity.
The network ended up being able to supply fuel to all of the airfields used by British and American bombers that carried out raids over Germany and occupied Europe, and was also used by the Allied armies that landed in France in June 1944, which was called Pluto (Pipeline Under The Ocean).
Officially, this network is still a state secret. That’s despite the fact that in 2015 the GPSS was sold to a Spanish company and is now known as the CLH Pipeline System. An approximate map of the pipeline can be seen in Scott’s video and on the CLH website, but the exact position has not been made public.

During the 1980s it was still in use and operated by Texaco ( government storage ) for whom I worked at that time ,I often worked at kelmarsh PSD and other PSDs operated by Texaco throughout the midlands and East Anglia on behalf of the British Government .

Thank you for your kind and very interesting comments and support. For years I used to wonder what this place was until I saw a documentary on the BBC television channel and this prompted me to delve deeper. Great to hear from someone who actually worked on this site. Awesome information. Thank you. Take care and stay safe. Best wishes. Kim 😉👍👍👍👍👍👍

As an ex military man. Yes this was a fuel base. And 90% of the fuel network is still in use. From Manchester airport down the west of England over to 2 london airports then around Norfolk over to Birmingham out to the north east and back again to Manchester. It's a rough circular circuit with a few add-ons on the way round. The pipeline comes above ground in a few areas around england and are marked with a stick and a yellow triangle frame on top.

Hi Steven, Thanks so much for the kind and very interesting comments and support. I had walked by this installation many many times and often wondered what it was. My curiosity finally got the better of me and I did some research. Infact even now, viewers such as yourself are adding more and more information to help my research even more and other viewers who watch and read the comments. I am very grateful for your knowledge and adding that important information to help me and other viewers who watch this video. Thank you very much. Take care. Best Wishes. Kim 😉👍👍👍👍👍

GPSS does not go to the two London airports or Manchester. It does go to Norfolk though. GPSS is military and absolutely not civil. Fawley ESSO supplies Heathrow and Gatwick. They are also fed by BP via Buncefield. Manchester has its own pipeline that is nothing to do with GPSS. Birmingham is also not fed from GPSS. Gatwick could be fed from the Thames estuary via a direct line or via Buncefield.

Thumbs up ere' Kim, interesting history of this site - there are many sites over the UK that the MOD still own is fenced off to the public. I was lucky to work with the MOD for a number of years at Tyneham in Dorset. Some is opened to the public and other parts not. Enjoyed that Kim, well put together. Many thanks for sharing fellow Drone Seekers :)

Nice one Kim, as always very interesting and superbly filmed. I think this place would have been decommissioned a long time ago as these underground tanks eventually start to rot and have water ingress. It would cost a small fortune to clean the site up. Also check out Loch Striven, Loch Ewe, and Cambletown they were part of the GPSS but are now Run by the MOD and if you google NATO POL (Petrol OIL Lubricants) you should be able to Google Earth them. I had to sign the Official Secrets Act when I worked on them in the 70s and 80s & 90s & 00s but they are now in the public domain. Most of the GPSS sites were run by BPA British Pipe Line Agency. Happy research. I am now retred but I was an instrument Engineer and we had equipment on all the GPSS sites throughout the UK miss it. If you want any more info send me a message. Happy Research John

Kelmarsh was the end of the pipeline, so its not as if anything runs through the site which might warrant secrecy. The site is unmanned and unprotected so you can be sure it is truly disused. If there was any hint of activity H&S would be all over it. So why the secrecy with the FOI request? My guess is it still on a list, someone forgot to get it off the list, so an FOI admin says, it's on the list so we will not comment. There are lots of places like this where the site status is way out of date. On the other hand, the old GPSS is alive and kicking though some under another name. There is even a location where you can put your ear against the pipe and hear the aviation kerosene on its way to Heathrow.

Interesting comments and thank you. Yeah quite some time after this video was released I dug deeper and the local police have even said jokingly if your not a sheep or rabbit and you get caught on the property the MOD have to be informed? I have seen videos of people exploring this site and as far as I know nobody has been prosecuted. All a big mystery if you ask me. There was some activity about 12 months after this video being released involving night activity and road closures at this site.? Why I haven't a clue but does fire up the old imagination some what. Best wishes. Kim 😉👍👍👍👍

Fascinating! Loved your introduction. I can't help wondering if there's anything else below the ground apart from the tanks, I also wonder how much fuel could be held in each tank. There's a bit of interesting information on Wikipedia too. There are a couple of old abandoned military depots near me, I've posted one on KZbin (Salters Gate munitions depot) and there's another but it's within half a mile or so of Frankland prison so I'm a bit wary, there are 25 bunkers there with soil embankments - so I'm itching to try! Lovely music as always.

Hi John, Thanks for popping over buddy. Yes this particular site kept me wondering what exactly was it for, and after doing some research it was a fuel storage site. Since this video was published I have since found out there are bunkers below ground with what used to contain electrics, pumps, communication devices etc, I can only only assume that these had been bricked up and the tunnel leading to them filled with soil. Trying to jog my memory of one of your video's. Anyway, thanks for the great comments my friend. See you on the next video.😉👍👍👍👍👍

I’m aware of a super high pressure fuel pipe that crosses within half a mile of my house, North/South, which I’m told is direct to the (civilian) airports, carrying AV fuel. Also, that it forms part of a network all over the country, from the terminals at ports and coastal facilities. Marked locally by innocuous looking posts..... and periodic aerial surveys by helicopters, which fly directly along the pipes path, crossing arable land at low altitude, presumably able to scan for leakage. I would assume that the pipes that arrive/leave or pass through Kelmarsh are probably still live, but are no longer diverted into storage, due to security of supply ?? The pipe locally was installed or upgraded within the last 40 or so years and I remember a story about some “toe rags” attempting to “tap” the supply, somewhere in the UK..... and discovering it ran at a pressure they were neither expecting... or able to cope with 😳

This system is probably still operational, either conserved or actually still in use. This is because these tanks and lines contain at least residual oil/fuel and if they leak due to neglect, they pose a very serious threat to groundwater and drinking water. So all of this would have to be excavated and remediated at great effort if abandoned. At least that is the case with gas stations and similar objects.

Grew up with this on my doorstep, there were regular practice warning sirens sounding, but thankfully nothing actually ever went boom ..... I'm wondering what question was not answered by the government from the freedom of information request ?

The thing about government sites is if they are using them they don't want it to look like they are , so you never know . It's not like our governments would lie to us lol .
