I knew that about my soap curing time, but still gave it 4 weeks. I bet it is ready sooner. I live in a very dry climate. Maybe instead of 'curing' time we should call it 'evaporation' time. Cure sounds like there are chemical changes still taking place. Great video. Thanks.

That's exactly what happens. Cure doesn't mean just water evaporation. It develops a crystalline structure and undergoes an acidification process too. Soap benefits from all these 3 things. Sadly, she missed talking about acidification (which is the reason why soaps become milder in time).

Thank you for this! I had long suspected that any recipe can be used for piping, but so many folks suggest that a specific recipe is ideal. I appreciate you demonstrating things like the water evaporation-we've actually found that about 13% of the mass evaporates out of our soaps during a 4-week cure! It's all so fascinating, isn't it? Love the chemistry of it!

I completely support all of your assumptions. My piping so is the same as my regular soap recipe I just water discount a lot so that it thickens faster and I can get on with piping.

Not hardness now. But well done soap (full saponification). The soap I talked about was not discounted but well saponified (no extra lye).

I don’t find it like that. First few weeks very harsh, at 4 weeks still not that great. There’s one point that soap starts to lather magically before or after 6 weeks. Sometimes it takes 8 weeks. It depends on the formula. Sometimes chemists don’t know it all. I mean have you seen what Kevin Dunn considered the best soap?! Or balanced soap? Unusable soap for me if I follow his advice. I do agree on piping soap. I knew that before and many people know you can just use regular recipe.

So the curing time for cold process is for water loss only? I've heard that it takes 4-6 weeks for all of the lye to neutralize in CP soap so it wont be so harsh. But in CP soap the lye has neutralized after 24 hours?

Most of my soaps are 100% coconut oil, but my customers love them due to the abundant lather. Yet they never complain about dry skin. If do, it's because of particular additives not suitable with their skin. I also usually sell my soaps 2 weeks after the making date. I do water discount.

Myths: 1. Pyrex is safe 2. Acidification doesn't exist 3. Curing means water evaporation. If you're going to cite Kevin Dunn, include the source. Or was this said over the phone? I doubt he ever said that there is no proof that soaps experience a drop in pH and that a longer cure time doesn't indeed make the soap milder. After the saponification process and during the cure time, the atmospheric carbon dioxide naturally present in the air reacts with any excess alkalinity in the soap. As soap is cured, it becomes less alkaline in the process, which is called soap acidification. Soaps that are less alkaline are much gentler on the skin, so yes, the notion that soaps become gentler over time is most certainly true. Crystallisation also doesn't finish at 4 weeks mark, it is an ongoing process and soap benefits from it because this change in structure makes it harder (so it's not just water evaporation), more lasting (again, different than having less water in it but they are correlated) and have a better lather.

If that's the statement, then it is right to say so..... cause it is referring to reaction between Lye and the oils has completed? Perhaps the focus should be on WHY soap gets 'better' with curing... eg high olive oil soap is different after curing. I am really curious. Thus, perhaps another video is needed for 'why (some) soaps are better after curing', it is definitely more than just water loss & harder bar. We can really 'see' color changes and different lather texture, which I believe is more than difference in water (which seems the direction of this discussion is heading)
