What should you feed birds during the summer months to increase you pleasure and their well being?
Mark McKellar is a wildlife biologist with over 35 years of bird study experience. He has a degree in Fish and Wildlife Sciences from North Carolina State University and has worked for the Department of the Army, the Wildlife Departments of North Carolina and Missouri. He ran nature centers for many years in Missouri and Pennsylvania before buying the Backyard Bird Center in the Northland area of Kansas City. Mark has led hundreds of bird hikes both locally and abroad. This time of year it is generally due to the sudden availability of natural food like dandelions or red maple seeds, once those have played out, they typically return. They don’t nest until mid July so they should keep coming to feeders of and on. Make sure the seed stays dry and fresh.

I have many fledglings that the parents are now feeding including the European starlings. I keep a good supply of reconstituted mealworms and fruit seed blends for them.

Very helpful! My wife and I just had this conversation and now can add more ideas for the positive aspect of feeding in the summer. Adding eggshells to our garden area is easy as I often boil eggs and keep them refrigerated. I’ve been composting shells but now I’ll sprinkle them on our wood chip trails. Wondering if no-hull mix can be fed in a peanut feeder.

I didn't think mealworms had calcium?? All the research I've done says the worms need to be dusted with calcium.

I’m not an entomologist but as I understand it, their exoskeleton is made of chitin Lehigh is basically calcium.

Insectivores should be eating high on the hog this summer with all of the cicadas out there. I haven't seen this many cicadas in years.

It is a major cicada year in parts of the country. We are just west of it so far.

Unfortunately chipmunks will eat safflower seed.
