PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. PLAY GHOST TRICK. He's *such* a good boy. There's so much development that Rabbid couldn't talk about due to spoilers. Ghost Trick is one of the most incredible games that I've ever played. It's so cleverly written and the way they drip-feed you information and twists is honestly mind-boggling. PLEASE. DO IT FOR MISSILE.

Ghost Trick was great, but I honestly thought Missile was kind of annoying and Mary Sue-ish. Doubly so because the game's lead writer even stated that Missile was an insert of his own dog. And the in-depth thing honestly just makes him even moreso.

Knew it was Missile from the first few notes of the song, and I was so happy man. He's such a good character in the game, and it's even more amazing when you consider Shu Takumi essentially immortalized his own dog in probably his best work. Go play Ghost Trick man. Obscure bonus dog: In early 90s point and click adventure, Companions of Xanth, there is a dog made of lava blocking your path. You deal with the dog by noticing your adventuring companion has her hair in a bun, then you take the bun and use it to scare away the hot dog. Puns work that way in Xanth, so that's fun.

Funny thing, Missile (in his appearances in the AA series and in Ghost Trick) was based off creator Shu Takumi's real-life Pomeranian, Missile. But yeah, if you are reading this and have not played Ghost Trick, do as all the other comments are urging you to: play this game. One of the best mystery plots I've ever seen in gaming. Every chapter has a huge twist and it keeps drawing you deeper and deeper into what is going on.

I was really hoping to see Lupus from Jet Force Gemini on here somewhere. He's a loyal dog who explores the galaxy with his owners, is a really good marksman firing from his back, and halfway into the game, when the main cast gets armor, he basically becomes a TANK DOG. All while still being able to hover for short distances, even when he's part tank. Lupus is a good boy.

I only know Koromaru from the PQ games. I have not played P3 yet. He is a charming companion. He is like a combination of a noble warrior an a gentleman. I love that part when he uses his weapon grade cutness to bend Mitsuru to his will. But his interactions with Morgana in Persona Q2 where wasted potential in my eyes. This honestly could have been really good. Morgana denies his cathood and his adorablness out of pride while Koromaru enjoys the heck out of being a cute dog while simultanously getting more respect and recognition than some of the human characters.

The best part with Koromaru is that he's a loyal dog who's Persona is another dog!!...specifically Cerberus, probably the most famous non-human in mythology. Bonus points for Persona 3's version of Cerberus ACTUALLY LOOKING LIKE THE 3 HEADED GUARD DOG HE'S ALWAYS PORTRAYED AS IN GREEK MYTHS!!!

There's actually one extra thing about Koromaru that you did not mention, and it's one of the reasons he's one of my top three video game goodest doggos, and it's that he's actually a very meta pupper. Because you see, while Koromaru may be able to attack you with his mouth-knife and ninja flips, he's also capable of flinging fire at you, and using various dark curses that will instantly send any enemy into the Shadow Realm instantly. And how does he do it, you may ask? By summoning his Persona, Cerberus. So guess what? Koromaru is a dog... that can summon ANOTHER DOG.

Probably all know this, but Sif gets a special mention because of his appearance as a character you can rescue in the Artorius DLC and summon as an ally. The real kicker though, is that completing the DLC before the Sif boss fight leads to an altered boss intro, where Sif actually recognises you from your scent and becomes more reluctant to start the battle, mourning that he has to kill you to stop you from suffering the same fate as his master; better dead than trapped within the abyss eternally.

Repede has a TON of personality too. He has his favorite and least favorite party members and chooses who he allows to pet him. He has a whole side quest where he competes with another dog to travel around the world and mark their territory. His ultimate attack is caled "????" the first time he uses it because he's the only character who doesn't call out his attacks, and while the other characters argue over what to call it, he's just sitting there all proud of himself.

Brown from Rule of Rose is up there with the best doggos in my book. The game is difficult and unforgiving (the controls are NOT good) but Brown is the only character for the protagonist with no ulterior motive and simply just loves her. He helps her find items with her nose and helps her out in combat. The story of Rule of Rose is tragic but Brown gives the player a breath of fresh air and some hope as they traverse the dark world of the airship.

Not that I really expected it, but the dog companion from Secret of Evermore not being on this list makes me sad. He's your only party member, he starts the whole game for you (he's the reason you end up where you do) and his form changes based on where you are, which also changes some of his abilities and his way of helping you in combat and that's just amazing.
